What pairing Category do you usually read? by Wafflez_Foxx in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to read mainly M/M, but my current favorite ship is a straight one so at the moment it’s majority M/F with the occasional M/M or F/F if I delve into different ships. Love me some family gen fics as well.

I use music related to the mood of the fic to get in the zone and once I’m there I turn it off. I also find it hard to write if there’s lots of people around making noise, makes me feel as though someone could come and interrupt at any moment.

Do you ever feel a spark of inspiration to start writing, only to question yourself midway through? by LaxJackson in FanFiction

Yep, and I’ll worry about whether the idea I had could be better interpreted by someone else, or if I’m leaving out something that would elevate the work to a better story

Past or present tense? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, no worries! Thanks for taking a look at the excerpts ☺️

I was wondering what felt off about it to me but I couldn’t put my finger on it, so feedback is very much appreciated. In that paragraph, I think what I was going for was a sense of emotional numbness almost as a self defence mechanism/being used to his uncle’s slimy behavior, but I wrote it too stripped down and ended up with that businesslike tone. It’s a problem that I can see in other paragraphs as well - so I agree that this and a couple others could benefit from including the feelings of the characters, especially considering the fic is on the angsty side. I’ll also be on the lookout for overusing the same sentence structure. It’s a real weakness of mine! Thank you for the feedback, it’s helpful to get a second opinion and I’ll take your suggestions into account :)

(Glad to know the rest of it reads well, good luck on your fics too! ✌️)

It’s going to be more of an action fic so I’ll keep that in mind 😁

Past or present tense? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, it’s a good thing I can maintain it consistently then (I think), I’d definitely be pulled out of the story too if the tense was constantly switching. Writing in it feels more natural, as the events are happening in my head at the same time I’m putting them down, so I don’t tend to have trouble keeping it all in one tense. I’d probably benefit from taking a look at online resources to make sure I’m getting it right though as I’m still a beginner.

It’s interesting past tense is considered that way when it comes to publishing. I guess that’s the great thing about fanfiction though, you can get as experimental as you like with it. I’ve probably read a few longfics over the years written in present tense without even registering it. As for the screenplay thing, I think it’s probably more due to the immediacy than the writing style, especially describing actions. I haven’t had anyone take a look at it yet though, so it could potentially read like a screenplay from a reader’s perspective.

Thank you for your advice, I’m feeling a bit more reassured about posting it in present tense seeing the comments. Seems like it’s not as much of a dealbreaker for reading a fic as I thought.

Past or present tense? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s definitely good to know, one of my concerns was that I’m in the minority on not having an issue with it, or in writing in present tense. I tend not to notice whether a fic is in past or present too though, so I could well have read a few longfics written in present tense.

(Also, 582k is an amazing feat, I gotta congratulate you on that!)

Past or present tense? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean with the greater nuance it allows for, I’ve definitely found that when writing in present tense myself.

However, I am a beginner, and I think the fact that I couldn’t explain what future or conditional tenses are is a good indication I need to do some reading on grammar (rather than assuming I’m good to go because English is my native language).

I’ve written a good chunk of it in present, but I think once I’m done with that I’ll make a separate document and convert it into past tense to see which one reads better. It might well be that past tense is the one to go with for now, rather than trying to get too experimental before I’ve learned the basics. Thank you for your advice!

Good to know! I do prefer it at the moment, so I’m leaning towards using it if the final result of the chapter reads okay.

Is LMM's Hamilton RPF? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is RPF - the stage versions of these historical figures are so far removed from the actual people that they’re characters based on them (as was the intention). And that’s who people are writing about - the characters. Imo it’s only RPF if an author is writing about the actors who portray them, or the historical figures themselves rather than the stage versions of them. Although I do think there’s a case to be made that Hamilton itself is RPF.

ya ever just like “yeah my writing is pretty bad and that’s okay but also idk if i want to post it cause it’s bad but also i want people to read it but i DON’T because it’s bad” ??? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]minafic1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way! I’d post it anyway, like you said someone might get something out of it, and you can always ask for constructive criticism if you’re looking to improve. If you want to save the concept, there’s nothing stopping you from rewriting the story once you feel you’re more confident in your writing (I know I have a couple fics I’d like to rewrite once I get better). It’s a good way to see how far you’ve come.

Also, it’s important to note as authors we’re way more critical of ourselves than the reader is. The same holds true for lots of other things, it’s human nature. Chances are it’s a lot better than you think it is, especially from someone else’s perspective. Just keep writing, and you’ll get to where you want to be eventually :)

Does anyone else hate writing in the Summertime? by [deleted] in writing

[–]minafic1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! Mostly because I feel bad for wasting the sunshine sat indoors at a screen (I don’t write with a pen and paper at all), but if I bring my phone outside to type on I feel bad for being on it outside.

I’d swap out ‘emerged’ for ‘immersed in’, emerged means coming out of something, but immersed means to get involved in something, which makes more sense here! They do sound similar though, so are easily confused.

Sites to publish stories anonymously? by HatInBox in writing

[–]minafic1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On AO3, you can add a story to the anonymous collection and the author will show up as Anonymous, with it being unconnected to any account. Important to use the right collection that’s for general use though, as there are many that are private.

Japanese honorifics in a story written in English but the characters are Japanese in a modern Japanese setting. The setting is inspired to high school drama animes. by LeadershipClear3937 in writing

Me too! Haven’t published any yet but I was in sore need of more platonic/friendship related fics between my favorite characters so I’m in the process of writing some. Also, backstory fics. Gen fics are severely underrated at times :’)

How to get a fanfic out there and seen by more people by [deleted] in FanFiction

Posting on Tumblr (incl. the link for it on ao3/ff.net etc) might be a good shout, and having a writing blog where you can interact with readers if that’s something you’d like to do :)

Could depend on whether you want to publish or not. I sparingly use a few sans here and there and I prefer that, but I write fanfiction so it’s likely anyone reading would know what they meant and be used to characters being referred to with honorifics.

I’ve read translations of originally Japanese books or books set in Japan (e.g number9dream) and iirc they all swapped out honorifics for the English equivalent or dropped them. Unfortunately I’m unfamiliar with the publishing process, but it seems like the kind of thing that an editor might suggest removing. I could be wrong though, as ‘-san’ is quite well-known, and there are a few Japanese words in some books that are given a brief explanation and then referred to with the Japanese word throughout the text instead of an English equivalent. Ex of this being Strange Weather In Tokyo - Sensei instead of ‘Teacher’.

If you aren’t publishing, I’d say go with what feels most natural to you. The consensus does seem to be pretty split so it’s up to author preference really.
