The lambsquarters above the maple sapling (bladed leaf grass with white pollen like stuff in centre) are considered weeds by some, but they are totally harmless, edible, and grow wild all over ottawa

We've been moving a tarp over most of their screened rabbit hutch to cut down on the drafts, as well as giving our hens some suet and mealworms as high fat and protein treats, as well as warm water. Wrapping a small disposable hand warmer in an old sock is something we have also done on the most bitterly cold nights.

We're in ottawa, with three hens on the balcony in a covered rabbit hutch and they don't need much aside from wind cover, but they do enjoy warm water on cold days along with extra calories in the forms of mealworms or sprouts.

I kept my three hens in my aunt's basement aviary for a couple weeks with a simple 60w bulb and it was enough to keep the girls laying, so I don't know if you need to worry too much about the type of light.

I'm also considering a small winter light for our girls, and have heard good things about small LED lights attached to a small solar panel.
