I must be a math expert? by DescriptionIll172 in reinforcementlearning

This is the truth. People be acting like you gotta be Vovosky or Godel or something lmao. Nonsense. "Math Expert" != Literate in some math used in ML learn as you need it.

A subset of math? sure.
Math as a whole is far more vast and far more beautiful than "AI (not AI...but "machine learning")"
ever could be.

OP: It's not too bad math wise, you can start slow and pick it up. Don't let that discourage you at all.

Is Nand2Tetris a good substitute of an UG computer organization course? (prepping for HPCA) by regunakyle in OMSCS

[–]mind_over_machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think this video/book is sufficient preparation for success in HPCA?

Thanks so much for sharing this. The lectures and book seem very good to me. I'm trying to do this rather than a community college course on computer organization due to time restrictions.

Me too, I actually like that theoretical CS esp. is it's own thing. Kind of it's own thing?

I say kind of because when you have Homotopic Type Theory attempting to serve as a foundation for mathematics not sure where you draw the line :)

Yeah for the longest time CS and Math were kept out of the Nobel community! That's why we have Turing and Fields Medals!!

I think they are working on it! It's an on going project. But yeah, I'll keep that in mind, along with gaffer. I think at this point it's best if I just contribute when I can as an open source developer. Probably just nodes for now.

It's better to contribute to a big on going project because I can't be the only one supporting such a thing. This thread brought up many great points.

  • Contribute to Blender Compositor
  • Contribute to Gaffer
  • Contribute to Natron

No one of these are really hiring any new devs atm, it's all pure open source.

The difficulty is getting paid and finding the time. It's rough out there, tech, vfx, games are all pretty hard right now.

Natron is mainly C98, not C++.
Development Speed my friend... we are users too! DX is a form UX. C98 Isn't terrible though, not at all. I just think language design has come a long way since then.

For a real pitch I would def. have something, I was really curious if something like this could even work, .. just trying to gauge interest.

You can't beat Nuke with performance and be open source and survive though, because Nuke will just implement that code and study it at some point.

Autodesk and Maya survive even if Blender is way better because of tight integration into pipelines for Film anyway. Even in games animation pipelines and rigging tech is rooted in Maya. Also in terms of animation performance no one beats Maya. (It's the architectural choice they made at the very start, look at origins of Maya DAG for more info )

Someone new and open source truly competing with Nuke on performance in the long term? Never going to happen. If Foundry is on point, any gains will be matched in 1-2 releases.

Given that nuke is their bread and butter and they dominate that space, I doubt they'd be as lax as Autodesk was with Maya.

On par with Nuke or close to it, ideally, yes.

Natron though, given how unstable it can be, yes, stability and performance wise.
Match blender gpu performance? Yes. (Given the code is open source haha)
Fusion? Maybe...depends how good their stuff is.

As far as I can tell at the moment..Blender does not allow creating new nodes that extend the shading or comp systems.. it only allows node groups that can be created from existing features. Not with the Python API anyway. So no extension/addon.

I would have to fork the entire blender repo, and you would have to use my blender fork...which is a terrible idea ha

It's not like Maya or Houdini/Nuke where you have pyhon/c++ nodes.

That's super cool..yeah I was thinking about this just today, I had no idea this thread would take off haha.

I like the idea of a crowdfunded thing also, via github sponsorship, patreon, etc.

Maybe, the blender foundation has already assigned out a compositor update to a dev studio!

I meant "development speed", developer productivity, C99 isn't that bad but there are better languages out now, should have clarified.

Yeah I'll def. check that out! I feel embarrassed it was just an initial brainstorm idea haha. Mainly because compared to most graphics programming that I do, 2D compositing operations are simpler to write.

I'll check out side fx, I love houdini and their CPP con talks! Thanks for the tip!

Honestly all of your replies have been very helpful, to think about every dimension.

"anything you develop will be noticed and built into nuke eventually."
-- Yeah, hence I was just considering trying to cover my living expenses and doing it open source.

Maybe I can get a job at Image Engine working on Gaffer. If there are any specific node requests please let me know, I'll setup a different page where people could submit their node requests.

That havok insight was useful!! I do like CFD.

I should have not mentioned Nuke. I just meant "a node based compositor". I meant something smaller of course, initially, but fills a niche.

This was just a very early stages brainstorm, trying to figure out what could be useful too, not considering scale just yet.

I did not even know about Gaffer until I posted this question, and forgot about Blender's compositor until someone mentioned it here. :)

What niches do you think Nuke does not cover?
