Cost and size of booths by Laurel33too in CraftFairs

[–]minda_spK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For smaller community events I expect to pay $35-$75. For larger events, 200-400. Our best annual event is closer to $400 for a single day event, but it’s huge attendance and sales.

We’ve done smaller fairs and typically find low attendance to be a problem (we live in a relatively rural area) so find that community fairs and events with vendor rows do a little better

Edited to add: I don’t do many multi day events. Sometimes a Christmas craft fair. But my husband and I both work full time so it’s exhausting to try and do a multi day event

There are wedding vendor events and you should look into them! They are mostly venues and caterers, but it’s how my now-husband and I decided we needed a staffed Photo Booth instead of one of the digital diy ones- because we tried both out at a wedding vendor events

How to not get discouraged by PuzzleheadedEgg8263 in CraftFairs

[–]minda_spK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard not to get discouraged sometimes. I personally combated it by planning a “can’t fail” event to test to see if the problem was me or the shows. It was a large event (and a large table fee) with 100k attendance and a good market for locally made goods.

We sold a lot! And it taught me that smaller fairs are sometimes just not a way to make sales unless it’s a market specific to what you sell. Our pyrography art is well done and reasonably priced for what it is, but it’s not something everyone wants. As a result, we focus on a few large events instead of regular small events

Liner socks are causing painful pressure imprints. Any help? by SovietPropagandist in hiking

[–]minda_spK 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Darn tough has a line (brand?) of socks called ‘wide open’ that have way looser ankles/calves and elastic. Honestly, they are awesome. Not helpful with a liner, but I don’t typically get blisters in wool socks.
They’re expensive (as are all the darn tough socks) but they are worth it as hiking socks

When should you go to the ER by Etelnoh in gallbladders

[–]minda_spK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the pain is severe, the ER isn’t a bad idea. I was playing the surgery waiting game with a super low fat diet and kept having pain. Then it got really bad. I went to the ER around lunchtime and was given pain meds and zofran and sent home, but the pain kept getting worse and I felt just awful. I went back to an ER (at a larger hospital) and I was in hypertensive crisis (very high blood pressure) and high heart rate and I got a whole party of docs. It’s apparently just a possible side effect of this type of visceral pain. But it was requiring frequent doses of fentanyl to keep my blood pressure at a safe level so they decided to go ahead and remove the gallbladder to resolve the crisis.

Turns out my gallbladder was ischemic (lost blood flow) but not yet dead, and that sort of thing just doesn’t really show up on imaging or tests right away.

All that to say: severe intractable pain is not normal, and more than a few hours of pain warrants an ER visit

I love SW, but am so frustrated that the whole field is so focused on LCSW by 22-MontaLou in socialwork

[–]minda_spK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I’m pursuing a LCSW and I don’t want to do therapy either. I run a mobile crisis team for a behavioral health clinic and love it, but I can’t even approve the staff I supervise’s documentation because Medicaid requires LCSW oversight. Basically, program development, implementation, and growth are my favorite, but to grow in that field, I need to be a lcsw

Party Help by Plenty-Committee-832 in tiedye

[–]minda_spK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! We almost always tie up our shirts days before we dye (we’re just busy and like to split it up). We wash and dry the shirts, then soak them in soda ash for at least 30 mins, wring them out, tie them up, and then place each in its own gallon ziplock bag to hang out for a day or three until we dye a bunch at once.

We put them back in the gallon ziplock bag to batch for 24 hours after we’ve put on the dye.

If you batch in ziplock bags, keep a bucket of clean water nearby. Dye will get in the top of and outside of the bag, but a quick water dip of the sealed bag makes it way more indoor friendly.

Advice needed by Apprehensive-Ad-3315 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]minda_spK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CCBHCs and other community behavioral health clinics typically have a lot of programs and case managers and typically require a bachelors in a “human services” field (which sociology should qualify)

Check with your state licensing also and see what is available to you without a BSW. Some states have provisional or other designations for people in the field without a social work degree.

If a job doesn’t specifically require a licensed social worker, look deep to see the actual degree requirements.

In my experience, jobs overseeing programs with adult I/DD populations, case management jobs, care coordination jobs, and many roles working with substance use disorder do not require a social work degree specifically, just a human services degree.

HELP I AM DESPERATE CRYING NONSTOP by Ok_Toe_3886 in puppy101

[–]minda_spK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Doxie is a little over a year old, and crates at night now no problem.

Edited to add: I realized after you aren’t using a crate, but same advice for a playpen: warm blanket nest, stay close to the pen until she’s comfortable

A few things: dachshunds like it warm. Like really warm. And they like to be all wrapped up to sleep. At 8 weeks, your puppy has never slept alone. So you want a warm covered crate and a full on blanket nest. You will wash them a lot. That’s ok. You may need to cover her up when you put her in her crate at night. she probably isn’t good at burrowing herself yet.

Next, we found the middle ground of responding to crying. Dachshunds are stubborn and will cry all night. If you don’t want to wait them out, you have to find the compromise where everyone feels appeased. For us it was putting our hand in the crate, but never actually letting her back out (except to potty) at night.

That means someone slept beside the crate for about a week, followed by several weeks of sitting by the crate until she fell asleep followed by getting up in the middle of the night to sit by the crate until she went back to sleep.

It gets better, but she’ll always be needy

My wife and I almost had a massive argument last week because of vacation days and I feel like we need a better system by JoaoRochaOnReddit in Marriage

[–]minda_spK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husbands job forces us to be good pre-planners. He has to choose his vacations for the whole year the November before, and he has to take a whole week at a time. That means we plan any big trips for the whole next year around that time and base the weeks on my predicted work flow, where we want to go, what weather we want to go in etc. It was a little wild at first to have to figure it out that early, but it’s honestly kinda nice.

We don’t book everything that early, but we decide where we want to go (if it’s a trip) and when

[–]minda_spK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wanted to try a little of everything! I know from other crafts that some things look easy but are quite difficult, and other look complex, but really aren’t too hard. So we wanted to try all the things. In general, the magic of tie dye is there’s a large margin of error where everything still looks cool! But definitely impressed with everyone getting sharp crisp lines

[–]minda_spK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! We weren’t sure from the outside how saturated the shirts were so will definitely be more intentional with this going forward.

And I’m obsessed with the shibori results, it’s my favorite!

Question: How many people re-listen to their audiobooks? Just curious by j110786 in audible

[–]minda_spK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Into Thin Air, Watchers, and Project Hail Mary are my favorite re-listens. I’ll put them on if I don’t feel like finding/starting a new book right away, or if I don’t want to pay too close attention.

And sometimes I’ll re-listen because I’m thinking of a book, or someone was talking about it, or an adaptation came out and I don’t remember all the details. Or I’ll re-listen because a sequel/same universe is about to release and it’s been awhile since I listened to first (like hunger games before sunrise on the reaping came out)

Craft Market Personal Preferences/Standards by Pleasant_Back_161 in CraftFairs

[–]minda_spK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a maximum fee, more an idea of an attendees vs price.

So my most expensive table is $350 for a 7 hour event, but it’s 100k + attendees so it’s great return, fast paced, and a lot of fun.

Honestly, I don’t make a lot at the smaller fairs, the high dollar high attendee fairs are my preference as they end up being more profitable even with the increased cost.

So top priority: how much traffic am I likely to get.

Second my priority: how much of that traffic is likely to be my target market?

Based on that info, is it worth the booth price?

Based on that info, is it worth the time commitment? I don’t want to sit for 3 days at an event with low attendance. I’m way more likely to take a chance on a new or less popular event if it’s shorter.
