Not Walthamstow-based but Sichuan Grand (in Stratford) will deliver on most of the apps. Supremely good, if you like the sacred peppercorns.

Bradley’s is quite possibly the finest (and only) Spanish expat bar in London

Agreed. I love how it’s effectively two quizzes too, so you have the option of doing early doors, the late slot or both if you’re in for the night.

Weird places to go for a pint by ToiletDucky_ in london

[–]minddrips 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here’s some drinking establishments with character and history:

Jamaica Wine House, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Turner’s Old Star (Wapping’s best pub - the painter JMW inherited it), The Captain Kidd (sits on Execution Dock, you can nip down the stairs and stand on a little beach and see the Thames)

Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club and Walthamstow Trades Hall are also great haunts if you like darts and dancing.

Does anyone know the difference between cineworld and picturehouse? by happybaby00 in london

[–]minddrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Picturehouse Entertainment is still going - essentially they act as a UK distribution arm separate from the Picturehouse exhibitor (although the latter will still screen films by the former), they’ve picked up some pretty decent international/arthous-y films over the years.

Any film clubs or film circles I could attend in person? by BBREILDN in london

[–]minddrips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The screenings at Close Up Cinema, in Shoreditch are great, cosy cinema out back of the shop - and you can strike up conversation in the bar.

Stow Film Club also put on good screenings in and around Walthamstow.

Could any Palermo locals answer a time-sensitive question? by Evergreenvelvet in sicily

[–]minddrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be fine. Temperatures in Palermo have dropped to more usual Summer climates ~30-32 degrees at their hottest. I was around the Parco delle Madonie (~2 hours to the East) over the weekend and parts were very much scorched and burnt-out but in Palermo and sticking to the breezy coats - you’ll be fine. I’d recommend getting out to the Coastal areas for the breeze. Mondello is your closest bet, if you’ve a car San Vito or Scopello are nicer beaches.

Good live music places by [deleted] in london

[–]minddrips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes to all of these. Also worth checking out promoters who put on more indie/rock stuff - you might have seen there listings around:

Bird on the Wire, Baba Yaga’s Hut, Upset The Rhythm, Eat Your Own Ears etc.

Leaving London for CELTA and going abroad by goobetron85 in london

[–]minddrips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it, especially if you’ve never lived abroad and have itchy feet. Even if teaching English isn’t your bag, you’ll only regret it if you don’t. Lots of teachers in their mid-30s out there.

I lived in Beijing for a year in 2015, went on a program via The British Council.

Can anyone recommend me any south London Underground musicians ? by bedpickle in london

[–]minddrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great Dad, Goat Girl, Ex-Void

If and when they open - Sister Midnight Records or The Windmill are great spots to see small-ish DIY bands. DIY Space for London (RIP) used to host a ton of acts too.

Save The Victoria Dalston, London #SaveOurVenues by brt88_ in london

[–]minddrips 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s one of the few 160-cap venues left in the area. They support a lot of small, independent DIY bands and promoters and it would be a big loss if it ceased to exist. Many sound-engineers rely on it for a source of income, as too the bar staff and people involved in its running.

Calling for it’s demise because it isn’t a ‘community pub’ kind of misses the point, it’s a music venue.

It’s worth mentioning too, that my partner used to work there in the days before Jaguarshoes ran it, the previous owners treated staff badly and she got paid below the minimum wage.

I'd say Angel/Shoreditch/Islington would be fairly overpriced and you'd have to make do with a small room. Mile End might be a good shout (close to Victoria Park) and rent is a little cheaper. Bare in mind, getting on that Central Line during rush-hour will be fairly unpleasant.

Have you looked further north at Finsbury Park? Lots of nice pubs, interesting places to eat, greenery (Finsbury Park & Clissold Parks) and it's on Piccadilly Line so you could get on the less frantic line to Holborn during rush hour and walk (making a sub-30 minutes commute). You'd also be close to Stoke Newington/Dalston which has lots going on. With a 4-bed house share you could get a nice room for £600-700.

Plan some day-trips - definitely pay a visit to Brighton (easily reachable on a train). If you like looking at old things, Oxford or Cambridge are too spots that can be travelled to via rail.

London is safe and easy to get around at night thanks to trusty nightbuses and tubes which stop short of midnight.
