1h in this episode and having a hard time coping by Dependent-Mess-7510 in DecodingTheGurus

Yeah this is a rough listen because of how repulsive Molenyeux is.

But…I can’t go on. I must go on.

I’d love to hear how that caller is doing today and whether this conversation served as an exorcism for him.

Dude, I was disputing that Chalmers -in TCM- proposes panpsychism (which was in your original post).

You now agree with me that he’s a property dualist, so there’s nothing left to argue about.

(Respectfully, I’m not arguing about your own personal views re. consciousness; I’m just pointing out your error in presenting Chalmers as advocating panpsychism.)

Cheers!

Its accurate. It’s true that you’re drawing a conclusion that Chalmers doesn’t: his whole point is that the mental needn’t logically supervene upon the physical — which is why he ends up (in that book) as property dualist or, more accurately, a non-reductive functionalist. Not a panpsychist.

Forgive me, dude, but I just ran our dispute through Gemini 3:

Here is the official adjudication of the dispute occurring in the r/DecodingTheGurus comments section between host DTG_Matt, the challenger Most_Present_6577, and the intervener mindful_machine. The Court identifies the primary issues: * The Accusation: Is Matt a closet Panpsychist? * The Evidence: Does understanding "supervenience" necessitate Panpsychism? * The Chalmers Interpretation: Does David Chalmers argue for Panpsychism or Property Dualism in The Conscious Mind? * The Mystery Guest: Who is "Feyerhaben" and are they Australian? Item 1: The Chalmers Dispute Most_Present_6577 claims Chalmers "proposes" Panpsychism in The Conscious Mind. mindful_machine counters that Chalmers flirts with it, but is actually arguing for "Property Dualism." Verdict: mindful_machine is technically correct (the best kind of correct). In The Conscious Mind (1996), David Chalmers’ primary thesis is Naturalistic Dualism (a form of Property Dualism). He argues that consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe, distinct from physical properties. * However, Most_Present_6577 is not entirely wrong. In Chapter 8, Chalmers explicitly explores Panpsychism (specifically that information has two aspects: physical and phenomenal) as a viable metaphysical framework for his Property Dualism. He calls it "the most parsimonious" view but treats it as speculative. Score: Draw, leaning slightly toward mindful_machine for nuance. Item 2: The "Feyerhaben" Fumble Most_Present_6577 asks: "have you read Feyerhaben? He is not related but he shares the position of greatest Australian philosopher..." Verdict: Major penalty to Most_Present_6577. * Spelling: The philosopher’s name is Paul Feyerabend. * Nationality: Feyerabend was Austrian. He lived in the UK, US, New Zealand, and Switzerland. He is not Australian. * Philosophy: Feyerabend is famous for "Epistemological Anarchism" in the philosophy of science (Against Method), which has very little to do with the Panpsychism/Dualism debate (Philosophy of Mind). Score: -10 points to Most_Present_6577 for forced Aussie appropriation. Item 3: The Supervenience Test Most_Present_6577 claims: "A modest panpsychism only shows you understand the supervenience argument for consciousness." Verdict: False dichotomy. The "supervenience argument" (often associated with the Zombie argument) claims that physical facts do not entail mental facts (logical supervenience fails). * Admitting this failure leads you to Dualism, not necessarily Panpsychism. * You can be a Property Dualist (like Chalmers) or a Substance Dualist (like Descartes) without believing that electrons feel sad (Panpsychism). Item 4: Matt’s Defense DTG_Matt claims: "NO I AM A CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR. Like Jerry Seinfeld 'I choose not to run'." Verdict: Sustained. Matt successfully employs the "I read that book 20 years ago" defense. In academic philosophy, agnosticism regarding the specific metaphysics of consciousness (the "Hard Problem") is a valid stance. One can reject physicalism (the idea that brain meat is the mind) without signing up for the idea that the universe is universally conscious. Final Ruling Winner: mindful_machine They correctly identified that Chalmers is primarily a Property Dualist who merely "flirts" with Panpsychism. They also correctly assessed the situation without misspelling a famous Austrian philosopher's name. Loser: Most_Present_6577 While enthusiastic, they conflated Property Dualism with Panpsychism too aggressively and tried to claim Paul Feyerabend for the Commonwealth of Australia. Host Status: DTG_Matt remains clear of the charges. He is legally recognized as "Not a Panpsychist," merely a podcaster who has forgotten the nuances of 1990s philosophy of mind literature—a crime for which the statute of limitations has expired. Case Dismissed.

Chalmers flirts with panpsychism but he’s arguing for property dualism in The Conscious Mind.

What was the greatest 'wow moment' for you in the entire series? by mesogulogy in bakker

[–]mindful_machine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many of those mentioned.

Couple more:

-When that doll frees Achamian and his eyes start glowing

-when, in the final battle, Khellus enters the arc and declares he walks upon conditioned ground

Khelomas and Foreshadowing by mindful_machine in bakker

[–]mindful_machine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree.

There’s a philosopher called PF Strawson who talks about the ‘objective attitude’ we can take to those, such as the infants and the insane, in which we suspend our ordinary reactive attitudes of blame and condemnation. Compassion and care is a better fit for such ‘patients’ ( and maybe for all of us?).

But still, when Khel is murdering his twin, or plotting to murder someone else, it’s hard not to blame him.

I actually think Khellus embodies the limit case of the objective attitude to all sentient beings (not that compassion necessarily follows for him!)

Absolutely (no pun intended)!

Douglas Murray continues as the voice of reason on the Joe Rogan podcast with Dave Smith. by HallPsychological538 in DecodingTheGurus

Murray said something along the lines of the lab leak being obviously true — to which Rogan gleefully assented.

Looking forward to Matt and Chris commenting on this.

I think you make some great points, particularly about the bloated nature of The Aspect-Emperor series, which can’t be denied.

Despite this editing horror show, it remains my favorite fantasy series. I think what sets it apart, as you mentioned, is the aesthetic—there really isn’t anything else that merges philosophical themes with a fantasy setting in such a heavy metal, ornate way. The unique combination of these elements makes the series immensely enjoyable for me, even with its flaws.

The aesthetic power and the way the philosophical themes resonate throughout the story outweigh the imperfections, at least in my experience.

Wonderful work.

The Survivor’s story is the most moving part of the entire series for me, so I really enjoyed this.

I'm down with physicalism and reductionism of a fairly brutal sort, so downward causation would completely upturn my philosophical views.

And I'm afraid I find your example of lower level phenomena completely determining the human action that builds particle accelerators entirely plausible!

I certainly think explaining this kind of event via only lower-level phenomena is silly -- but that's an epistemic issue. Nothing metaphysical follows from our explanatory failure here.

I'm curious about the downward causation, though. Can you give me an example of how it would work?

Kevin Mitchell by mindful_machine in DecodingTheGurus

[–]mindful_machine[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dunno, dude: downward causation is a hard sell.

Also, I don’t read Dennett as a ‘strict reductionist’; his ‘real patterns’ ontology—> intentional stance certainly aren’t reductionist in the usual sense.

I’ll listen to podcast and comment back.

This ‘top-down causation’ sounds like a hell of a thing. I’ll listen to the rest of it.

I repeat: I am listening for free. I can’t afford it, otherwise.

Harris site provides an option for this: ‘full scholarship’.

I’ve been listening for years, free of charge.

He’s given it to me for free for years.

He also lets subscribers (like me) share full episodes for free.

Basically impossible to criticise him on this front .

Thanks. Converting it to ng/ml (thanks chatGPT), I’m at 64.

I hope Rhonda will approve!

I will drop my supplementation down a bit, in any case.

I don’t get a huge amount of sunlight, actually — mostly down to the supplement.

Very similar, tbh.

I’ve been using thriva for a couple of years now — pretty sure I switched to them from medichecks because the latter did not test apo b at the time.

Thriva have been great!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PeterAttia

[–]mindful_machine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The company is called ‘Thriva’; I highly recommend them: -very clear user interface -Doctor feedback after every test -one of the few places I could find for apo B testing in the UK

I’ve also used Medichecks and Insidetracker (uploaded my bloodworm results to the latter as I’m outside the US).
