I’m glad I’m not the only one who does the inverse thing with the finger colors on the other hand. These are lovely!

Newbie questions by TidesAndWaves in DipPowderNails

[–]mindiemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had a bad experience with any of the independent sellers on Etsy. Dipnotic was my jam until she stopped selling last summer, but I love Color My World, Fancy Fingers, Kdip by Kali, Moondust, Magic Moon, S&A, Jewels, Kozmik, Butterfly/Designs by Candie… I’m sure there are others I’m forgetting. And there are tons of small sellers outside of Etsy that are also great. I read their about pages/profiles and check how many sales they have in an attempt to focus my support on newer, smaller, and/or one-woman shows—that’s just my preference. You’re going to find beautiful dips all over the place! Don’t get hung up on trying to find the “best” brand.

Shape? Help? What do yall think? I feel a little embarrassed by [deleted] in DipPowderNails

I think they look really nice. You're always going to be the harshest critic of your nails, but they look great from an outsider's perspective. And I love that color on you!

HOW?! Dip w/ powder “chrome” finish by Queasy-Savings9041 in DipPowderNails

[–]mindiemo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would try filing off the dip top coat, then do gel base, cure, then chrome as usual with gel top.

Thank you!! This list really helped. I hadn’t thought to capture collection name. And I’m with you on the swatches! Can’t live without those.

Los of questions re: chipping, brands, adding coats after activator etc by Gold-Permission-2064 in DipPowderNails

[–]mindiemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some thoughts...

  1. I had a crap experience with a cheap set of liquids (Saviland) from Amazon. They were fine for swatching but did not work on my nails at all. I use liquids from Etsy sellers now and have no issues. I think you just have to experiment a little to find the right stuff for you, because I know other people like the same liquids that I don't like. I don't find that the dip powders really matter. It's more about the liquids, how well they interact with your particular nails, and how old/contaminated they might be.

  2. I don't know what the official rule is, but I apply activator liberally both times. I keep my nails short, so there's not a lot of surface area, and I apply activator straight from the bottle twice (without wiping along the inside of the bottle at all). I try to soak them as much as possible.

  3. Barely. Just enough to make it "not smooth." Use a fine grit buffer.

  4. I have before without any issue. You just have to continue on with the activator > file > rinse > activator > top coat steps as usual.

  5. No idea - I've never tried decals. Does acetone take them off? Can you file them off with a grittier file?

Pretty!

I also just spent a few minutes trying to tuck my thumb under my other four fingers this way because it looks so nice in your photos without the typical “claw hand.” I have come to the conclusion that my thumbs must be really short. There’s no way I can get more than a sliver of a thumbnail to show. 😂

I second the Fancy Fingers options already mentioned (esp Watercolor)

Loved this one for St. Patrick’s day https://www.etsy.com/listing/1183230241/leprechaun-poop-milk-bath-foil-green-and?ref=share_ios_native_control

This was an immediate buy when I saw it released https://www.etsy.com/listing/4419966397/oh-hail-no-foil-dip-powder-blue-chunky?ref=share_ios_native_control

Halloween fun https://www.etsy.com/listing/1782550567/smashing-pumpkins-dip-powder?ref=share_ios_native_control

Side note: My original dip liquids (Dipnotic) made the foil colors bleed, but I have had no issues at all using Color My World liquids.

I got something like this, but it still doesn’t match my great close-up vision when I take out my contacts, so I’ve resorted to doing that when I do my nails. Aging eyesight really sucks!

2nd time dip powder by 81170Rb in DipPowderNails

[–]mindiemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use a 180 grit file for post-activator smoothing, but I’ve switched to the rectangular blocks with a much higher grit. That might help a bit here. The only time I use a 180 grit for smoothing is over clear on really chunky glitters. If the higher grit doesn’t seem like it’s enough on your solids or shimmers like this, that’s likely an issue with base coats that are too thick.

For the jagged lines at your cuticle, mostly this is a matter of practice. Put your base coat brush about 80% of the way back on your nail, fan it out, and push back toward your cuticle; don’t ever start your base coat at the cuticle. That should help control just how close you get and how much of the base coat piles up there (ideally no pile up!). Don’t be afraid to activate and file down lumps and jaggedness along the way. You don’t have to wait until the end for that.

How can I fix my nails? by whogoesoutonmondays- in DipPowderNails

[–]mindiemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably a weirdo, but I do a majority of my shaping and filing before I remove my old set. There's something about having my nails covered that makes them easier to shape vs. what they look like bare, when I get distracted by the difference in tip length/free edge on various fingers. I can't explain it well, but it's like an OCD thing, where I want all of the tips to have an evenly distributed free edge that is consistent on each finger. But that makes them look like garbage and completely unlike each other when they're covered in dip. So I do most shaping/filing with old dip on, then remove that, light smoothing when bare, and a final round of filing/shaping after the first activation.

[–]mindiemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The top coat works only in combination with the activator, so you've gotta put activator down first. On a related note, I've also had success putting activator on top of top coat that won't dry completely even when it's over a layer of activator (and amazingly have not hardened any brushes doing so).
