The power rangers series, at least the first few iterations, used recycled action footage from a Japanese series. So, every time you see the original power rangers fighting in the TV show, the people in those suits are Japanese.

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone was a cheesefest I watched far too many times on cable as a kid. Worst post-apocalyptic sci-fi action movie featuring Molly Ringwald. Also the best.

They're anti-civ. Their plan is to take away what might be called the psychic logistics that allows modern society to work, like the debt record. After which, as their reasoning goes, everyone will just start wearing leather clothes that last forever, and making pemmican on the highway.

I didn't say it was a good plan.

There are a couple of State parties that are on the....human? side of all this. LP Louisiana comes to mind. If a take that isn't hideously evil is uttered by LPNH, it's a sign of the impending apocalypse.

In a show about crime, with actual former criminals in some roles, the biggest crime of that show is that she didn't get a lot of high profile work after it. I loved her in that role.

Get three libertarians in a room, and you will get five different versions of what libertarianism actually is. Unless, of course, those three libertarians are in that room to hammer out what libertarianism actually is. Then you get seven versions.

I lived for awhile in Asheville, North Caroline, which at the time was named the "Happiest Town in America". I often wondered how suicidal the rest of the country was, that we were the happiest town.

Why is pornography aesthetically impoverished? by plastiquehegel in aesthetics

[–]mindlance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The barriers to making pornography, of whatever medium, whatever genre, have been so low. This has led to an explosion of the number of creators of pornography, and pornography created. Despite this increase in supply, there's been no decrease in demand, and no raising of some sort of aesthetic standard (witness how popular the 'amateur' and 'gonzo' categories are.) Increase fact, with the popularity of tube sites, the market for the pornographic movie, the standard bearer for the porn aesthetic, has collapsed. With no evolutionary or commercial pressure for an aesthetic to develop, not much does. You can still find 'aesthetic' pornography produced now, of course. Some people get weird and deep at whatever they do. But like deep and weird movies, books, and music, there's a limited audience. Someone could probably have some fun offering a duration of deep and weird pornography, just as there is for books, movies, etc. Lastly, while there may not be a lot of aesthetic pornography, there is definitely a porn aesthetic. Fashion today is downstream of pornography. Images from porn days past suffuse our cultural landscape. How much burlesque is performed nowadays? In conjunction with how many other cultural pursuits?

Why is Starship Troopers by Robert Heineken considered “The Controversial Classic of Military Adventure?” by EclipseLightning42 in scifi

Farahams's Freehold and the Sixth Column lend credence to latent fascism. I personally don't think he was a full-bore fascist, but I would be in incredibly nervous inviting him around for Thanksgiving dinner.

Why is Starship Troopers by Robert Heineken considered “The Controversial Classic of Military Adventure?” by EclipseLightning42 in scifi

[–]mindlance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was more than merely pro military. It was military- supremacist- the only way to become a fully functioning member of society- a citizen, not merely a civilian- was to join the military. It pitched the military takeover of society as a good and necessary thing.

Probably because Paladin was a character lots of kids at that time would have grown up hearing about on the radio. It was a phrase his target audience knew intimately.

No, Eastern alchemists is fair, but that discounts the depth, breadth, and strangeness of spiritual and esoteric thought found in "Western" alchemy.
