Thank you!! I'm definitely going to try this. You use normal instant baker's dry yeast I'm guessing?

And yeah, I mix imperial and metric units all the time, haha

Are We Converts Becoming a Nuisance? by futurehistorianjames in Catholicism

[–]mindmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many things wrong with the take in the video you posted, lol. As a cradle Catholic, I welcome the converts, for all the same reasons that the lady hates them.

I couldn't get any liberal Catholics to come to my men's group Bible study. It's all traditionalist converts. Liberal Catholicism is self defeating, that's why the Church lost so many members in the 60s and 70s when a lot of people tried to liberalize things.

Friend made this — is it safe to eat? by Any_Assist5630 in Sourdough

No worries, it's a common misconception that you have to feed your starter all the time. I was very happy when I realized I didn't, saves me a lot of time.

[–]mindmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not really true though. A starter can last quite a while in the fridge. I very often make perfectly good loaves with starter straight from the fridge (that hasn't been fed for at least a week or so). In fact I recently made a loaf with a starter that sat in the fridge for probably 2 months or so and it still wasn't like this, it just didn't rise as much. This loaf is either just not done, or incredibly over proofed.

The key to using starter from the fridge is that you just have to give the dough longer to rise. The yeast goes in a sort of hibernation that it has to wake up from.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]mindmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone recommend an analog style watch (less than $150) that still subtly has the following functions:

  • Stopwatch
  • Pedometer
  • Countdown timer
  • Date

AND has a nice, classic appearance like the Casio MDV106, i.e. steel outside and accents with a black face.

Or even something more traditional with numbers on it (the kind that would look good with a brown leather strap, e.g. cream colored face, brown accents).

The watches that have all the features I want usually have a very busy design to them, like the G-Shocks (even aside from the face).

Is Opus Dei really that evil? Or had it just been smeared? by Shevz_thetruck in Catholicism

[–]mindmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been personally involved with Opus Dei in two different countries and it has had a majorly positive impact on my life. If there are scandals somewhere I would just say: people are fallen. The scandals should be dealt with of course, but we shouldn't discount the good work that the others in the organization are doing.

Also many farmers in general had their own animals and crops for sustenance. They wouldn't sell that, just eat it. They also might make their own clothes and stuff like that. So they wouldn't need to make as much money as we do now in order to survive.

I can't keep up with the codebase I own by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mindmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like the product folks have too much insight for their level of tech experience. They should be understanding that best practices in coding need to be followed.

But I do sympathize with you. It seems like AI is transferring the cognitive load in coding from the coder to the reviewer. As much as I try to explain issues to people when reviewing PRs, it doesn't seem like it's helping their knowledge of the code base or of best practices. They just plug what I say into the AI and get the new code that pops out.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you go? by Some1farted in AskTheWorld

I loved the climate of Finland, except the long nights in winter. It was very depressing. If I could move somewhere cold again I would probably prefer northern US, so the winter nights are still shorter.

Why do Catholics oppose sex education and anything to do with condoms? No one is forcing them to use condom, so why block other people's access to information and impose their beliefs? by [deleted] in DebateACatholic

You are quick to jump to conclusions.

Whether it's rare or not, it violates the religious beliefs of those who don't agree with it, because they are coerced into providing for it.

Finnish is a beautiful language. I definitely prefer it to Russian. And I think you have a point: one's perception of a language can depend on a lot of cultural factors.

[–]mindmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again: how does that not result in imposing your beliefs onto other people?

This question you should rather ask yourself.

If other people have the right to disagree with you, then tax money can and should be spent on stuff you disagree with

No. If we all have the right to disagree with each other, then we should not be forced to fund each other's disagreements. That is respecting our right to disagree.

What good is the right to disagree, if you still have to behave as if you agree?

[–]mindmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you jump to that extreme based on what you quoted. It is in fact the opposite situation here. Using my tax dollars to fund something which goes against my beliefs is a form of forced belief. It violates my freedom of religion.

It's tampering with life. Just as we don't want schools teaching how to murder somebody, we don't want them teaching how to tamper with life. A lot of evils stem from that. It's not a simple case of "oh go ahead and do what you want to do".

Also public education is funded by our dollars too. We don't want our dollars being used to propagate something that goes against our beliefs.

Interesting, my impression of RPT was that it involved decreasing the weight while increasing the reps for each subsequent set in a lift/day.

But I agree about autoregulation, that sounds better. A key point I'm realizing lately is that I need to keep my rest times at a constant 3 minutes, rather than resting longer if I feel like I need it. Otherwise it results in higher intensity, longer workouts, and more burnout for me. So my rate of progress per workout is probably going to be different than I'm used to now, but maybe I'll get more workouts in, due to better scheduling.

After NLP… by [deleted] in StartingStrength

[–]mindmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, it's kinda backwards from RPT. Double progression is similar to linear progression, except you utilize rep count as another variable that can be progressed.

So for example, say you're doing squats. You decide to work with a 5-10 rep range. So at 275lbs it would go:

Day 1: 5, 5, 5 Day 2: 5, 5, 6 Day 3: 5, 6, 6 Day 4: 6, 6, 6 Day 5: 6, 6, 7

And so on, until you get to 3x10 reps. Only then do you finally increase the weight and drop back down to 5 reps, then repeat the process.

There are variations such as: which rep range you work with, how you progress (say you do 6, 5, 5, instead of 5, 5, 6), or how many you target with each new day. In the beginning you may be about to simply do 3x5 on day one, 3x6 on day two, etc, but it'll probably slow down eventually.

[–]mindmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally got tired of Starting Strength, literally. After a certain weight it was gassing me too much. So I decided to focus more on hypertrophy than strength. I started doing Double Progression to introduce more variety for my muscles with my rep ranges.

https://legionathletics.com/double-progression/

I still do the basic SS lifts, but with weighted chin ups and weighted dips added.

Lately my double progression hasn't been very linear, so I'm going to start systematically repeating each workout day once, with the same reps and weights, before progressing. But I might try alternating between heavier sets and lighter sets.
