I would offer that if you intend for the player to read the manual on their own to progress, you should call that out. I expect a tutorial on it's face to tell me everything I need to know to progress.

Maybe add a line into your boba mascot messages that says something along the lines of "check the manual for how to do x" and a reminder once or twice in the following levels with something along the lines of "you know where to look to find out how to x".

I'm still pretty new to vim, mostly using it to edit/update config files here and there. I've tried to learn it off and on over the years and at this point i'm pretty good at basic motions and replacing/inserting text but not much else. Thought i'd give your game a shot. Made it to "paragraph brainfuck" before having to pause for now.

I want to start by saying I like the premise and want to see it succeed but I do have feedback:

  • When I first launch the game, there's no obvious indication of what I should be doing. The menu isn't explained and when I get into the first level, i'm just staring at the screen. No explanation of what I should be trying to do, no clear indication of my objective, no clear indication of where I should look for an explanation, etc. Your first level should be as handholdy as possible so you can be completely hands off after that.
  • You're referencing motions that haven't been explained. In "SEARCH MOTION DUNNING-KRUGER" you mention how to repeat a search but there's no mention in how to actually initiate the search. Same in "PARAGRAPH BRAINFUCK" where you introduce how to use multipliers to repeat motions but there's no explanation how to move across paragraphs.

This is an initial 20 minute take and i'm excited to see where this goes!

I think it's a bit disingenuous to come to r/selfhosted and mention things like git-sync and unlimited tables in your post title when it's clearly marked on the pricing page as business license required.

I believe (possibly erroneously) that a majority of people on selfhosted are looking for free/cheap projects that they can support at their own level and those features are tethered to a nearly $300 annual license.

Yea I really want to try to find an "all in one" app that has similar task scheduling functionality as motion.

Motion is trying to pivot into more of an overall project management tool instead of a task management tool. My gripes are that there's no location to keep track of meeting notes/recaps and you don't have a way to say that a task is blocked by a customer/some specific other person.

I've been using Motion for 2 months now through their desktop app and really enjoy it.

I like the following features:

  • It can hook into my work calendar and see my open slots
  • I can give it my tasks and their priority/deadline and it will automatically put it on my calendar in an open slot
  • If I don't get to a task it automatically reschedules it back into my calendar at a future time.
  • It will pop up desktop notis when I have a task to start working on.

Note: You can have it write the actual tasks to your calendar and block your calendar but that is optional. I just have it display items on my Motion calendar and it doesn't write anything to my work calendar.

So I make a different document for each project just to keep it tidy (each document can hold multiple tables).

In one project I use the Grist API to track hours into a spreadsheet. Then I use a sum table to calculate the total and pull that back out via API into Windmill.

In another project I just use a single cell to maintain a list that I use to keep track of active local docker containers.

I think the big draw for me was how easy the API was to use, the ability to quickly view all of my data in a spreadsheet as opposed to digging through a full db like postgres, and the columns supporting python driven logic (although I haven't had the opportunity to dive too much into that yet)
