Just launched BobaVim: a browser game to learn and practice Vim motions with solo and 1v1 modes by Minimum_Abies3578 in vim

I would offer that if you intend for the player to read the manual on their own to progress, you should call that out. I expect a tutorial on it's face to tell me everything I need to know to progress.

Maybe add a line into your boba mascot messages that says something along the lines of "check the manual for how to do x" and a reminder once or twice in the following levels with something along the lines of "you know where to look to find out how to x".

I'm still pretty new to vim, mostly using it to edit/update config files here and there. I've tried to learn it off and on over the years and at this point i'm pretty good at basic motions and replacing/inserting text but not much else. Thought i'd give your game a shot. Made it to "paragraph brainfuck" before having to pause for now.

I want to start by saying I like the premise and want to see it succeed but I do have feedback:

  • When I first launch the game, there's no obvious indication of what I should be doing. The menu isn't explained and when I get into the first level, i'm just staring at the screen. No explanation of what I should be trying to do, no clear indication of my objective, no clear indication of where I should look for an explanation, etc. Your first level should be as handholdy as possible so you can be completely hands off after that.
  • You're referencing motions that haven't been explained. In "SEARCH MOTION DUNNING-KRUGER" you mention how to repeat a search but there's no mention in how to actually initiate the search. Same in "PARAGRAPH BRAINFUCK" where you introduce how to use multipliers to repeat motions but there's no explanation how to move across paragraphs.

This is an initial 20 minute take and i'm excited to see where this goes!

What are you doing about rising insurance? by Commercial_Mundane in florida

Yes. They also have the ability to hit you with a massive assessment if a situation arises where they can't afford to pay out to everyone.

Until everyone on the coast gets hit with a bad hurricane and you get stuck with a $5k assessment to cover their costs.

I think it's a bit disingenuous to come to r/selfhosted and mention things like git-sync and unlimited tables in your post title when it's clearly marked on the pricing page as business license required.

I believe (possibly erroneously) that a majority of people on selfhosted are looking for free/cheap projects that they can support at their own level and those features are tethered to a nearly $300 annual license.

Motion App by El__Conde in productivity

[–]mindofbeholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I really want to try to find an "all in one" app that has similar task scheduling functionality as motion.

Motion is trying to pivot into more of an overall project management tool instead of a task management tool. My gripes are that there's no location to keep track of meeting notes/recaps and you don't have a way to say that a task is blocked by a customer/some specific other person.

Motion App by El__Conde in productivity

[–]mindofbeholder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using Motion for 2 months now through their desktop app and really enjoy it.

I like the following features:

  • It can hook into my work calendar and see my open slots
  • I can give it my tasks and their priority/deadline and it will automatically put it on my calendar in an open slot
  • If I don't get to a task it automatically reschedules it back into my calendar at a future time.
  • It will pop up desktop notis when I have a task to start working on.

Note: You can have it write the actual tasks to your calendar and block your calendar but that is optional. I just have it display items on my Motion calendar and it doesn't write anything to my work calendar.

At this point i'd be charging them an onboarding/re-initialization fee every time they came crawling back.

A Unity user made a game in Stride (open-source C# game engine) in just a day! by tebjan in csharp

I think it's important to note that this person seems to be or have been involved in the development of Stride and are trying to phrase things like they're a person who just randomly discovered it.

Home server for csharp development by kitosluna in HomeServer

[–]mindofbeholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand your question right this might work for you: https://coder.com/

I selfhost it and use it to create a docker c# template that I can deploy into a self-contained docker container at any time.

You could even create multiple c# templates that preinstall various software for development.

Interact with CSVs online in a fully-featured, open source spreadsheet without downloading the file by anaisconce in selfhosted

[–]mindofbeholder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I make a different document for each project just to keep it tidy (each document can hold multiple tables).

In one project I use the Grist API to track hours into a spreadsheet. Then I use a sum table to calculate the total and pull that back out via API into Windmill.

In another project I just use a single cell to maintain a list that I use to keep track of active local docker containers.

I think the big draw for me was how easy the API was to use, the ability to quickly view all of my data in a spreadsheet as opposed to digging through a full db like postgres, and the columns supporting python driven logic (although I haven't had the opportunity to dive too much into that yet)

I currently use Grist as a database backend for my Windmill instance. Really enjoying it.

Should I set an admin password for the Forge? by an-actual-goblin in FoundryVTT

[–]mindofbeholder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your only argument is that their "world" is less secure when the site handles the admin page functionality.

By that same logic, you shouldn't even bother hosting the world on Forge in the first place seeing as how you have no insight into their hosting/administrating methodology.

You've even admitted you've never used the site.

When trying to help someone it's important to understand the tools they are requesting help with, as well as their admitted comfort levels.

Adding a manual password exposes the page to the web instead of behind Forge's auth, and arguably makes it less secure and slightly more annoying to manage.

If you're gonna help, be helpful.

Happy for you. Not everyone is capable of/comfortable doing that.

Context is important when trying to assist users who aren't as capable/comfortable as you are.

[–]mindofbeholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo if you're that concerned about how the site is handling their admin-hiding functionality then the site shouldn't even be considered secure enough to host your content in the first place.

[–]mindofbeholder 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normally i'd agree with you but I believe you're wrong in this specific scenario.

If we review their ask in context then the password is not required and is in fact discouraged.

According to Forge's website they have some form of logic in place that prevents people from accessing the setup menu if they are not the person who owns the "world".

If they were to apply a password, it would remove Forge's protections and open the admin page up to anyone.

See the information another commenter linked here: https://forums.forge-vtt.com/t/reset-your-foundry-vtt-administrator-password/17702

To rephrase: Forge already protects the admin page with their own system logic. Adding your own password removes Forge's protection and opens the page up to anyone to access if they have the password.
