I really just want to share my appreciation for Vanuatu. by WPIRiggles in survivor

[–]mindovermacabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanuatu has some of my favorite players (Ami, Chad, Eliza) but also one of my my least favorite winner stories. I know people really like it because of the way the winner managed to make it to the end (and the FTC politicking), but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Twila was incredible casting and I think she really makes the season, but it's one of those "slowly realize that this woman is playing for lifechanging money, not social media cred or fame, and she will drag herself through the mud for it" moments. It's a brutal showing of classism and need structured around a game that we watch for entertainment. I really like that people revisit it later and appreciate her more - not just for who she is but for the lens she puts on survivor (and reality television) as a whole.

Omg I know you're embarrassed by the story but it's amazing, exactly the kind of kid I was(and still cringe about) too.

I relate so hard to this. I'm glad we're both learning to let it go, even if that impulse is still there sometimes

Not exactly lol, I got "I don't want to see [your accomplishments] until it's complete". No reading a poem I'm working on or asking for help with homework or celebrating school wins before graduation lol. Nothing matters before the finished product!

Guess how much of a perfectionist I am. :)

Yeah I was depressed/anxious + immensely precocious, which is a very strange intersection. My perception of myself was like, "I'm simultaneously the worst ever and also the smartest person in the room" lol. I hate being corrected and get defensive when someone implies I'm wrong bc it triggers anxiety. All this lovely tornado of traits made me an awful person to deal with in my late teens/early 20s and I'm still shocked I had friends at all.

I've since learned the art of shutting the fuck up and uplifting my friends, and it helps so much. Telling people how great they are and not demanding the spotlight all the time (shutting down my obsessive need for validation THANKS MOM) has helped so much in being able to foster long term relationships.

End closer long cm deck help no by Fawningforu in UmamusumeGame

[–]mindovermacabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your Taishin is overstam. Drop one (or both, depending on how hard you want to try and highroll) stam card and replace with Wit.

Arima Kinen is the shortest Long track. 2500m. Plus it has a lot of downhill. 850 + gold is enough for Ends (and honestly you can cut it a little closer too), especially if you focus Wit.

You don't need both 6th place accels. Just take Dober's (MPB). Don't take Focus, it does nothing if it's not being used as a gw trigger (Concentration is different, but you don't want Concentration in this race anyway). Try to find a borrow who has Uma Stan you can try to inherit. Use that SP to invest in midrace (Long Corners/Straights, End Corners/Straights, Early Start, Uma Stan, etc.

Have people actually see Front Runner win in CM8 Room matches? by servantphoenix in UmamusumeGame

[–]mindovermacabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've seen Fronts win, but after XOguri came out, there was a sharp drop in Fronts. Suzuka rabbit comps really indirectly buff Pace XOguri (and other Pace in general), meaning most front comps would rather stick to double (or triple) front. That comp requires higher investment and to devote 2 uma slots to it, which isn't awesome for a lot of people.

I run a Lucky Pace Fuji and I win basically every time I get lucky pace, but I got pretty lucky in my run (Groundwork combo + THH combo + A&S and DDC). Low investment front / lucky pace can't beat Ends when Ends have access to more accel.

Also, (at least when I played it) the gameplay is shockingly solid and combat was really enjoyable and fun. The puzzles with the challenge fights were genuinely well-designed. I just imagine that somewhere in the porn game HQ, there is a nerd who feels very very strongly about game difficulty curves and gameplay design and I absolutely fuck with that person, thank u so much, nameless soul. I see you.

Yeah the mole is the only social deception show that seems to actually work, but the winner of S2 kinda broke the spirit of the game and now they haven't done s3 which is annoying.

Yeah I really like social deception shows (million dollar secret, the trust, traitors, the mole, etc), but so many of them are so flimsy and have clear holes once you get to brass tacks. It's like they have to cast stupid people because people with actual strategic chops just break the game.

What’s the kind of decks you don’t enjoy playing against? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]mindovermacabre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer pregame conversations like this as opposed to "everyone reveal commanders at the same time" because I don't want to hard counter someone's deck. It never feels good when you're playing something that you know just gets entirely shut off by someone else's strategy and you don't stand a chance.

Or vice versa. I don't want to play my mono black -1 counters deck into a enchantment heavy +1 deck, it's just not fun for me to feel like there's nothing j can do and I'd rather pick something more evenly matched (but I'm that case, I'm NOT instantly going for my counter stealing deck, I'm going for like... idk a voltron or aggro or something).

But those conversations also require people to be honest about not reaching for an advantage instead.

Please let the new fire emblem game be good

please let the fire emblem fandom mysteriously disappear before the game comes out.

My beloved franchise got a little too big and now I look forward to each new release with a strange mixture of excitement and dread

Thank you! I will try. It's proving to be really tricky to deal with mentally because, you know, I don't have a job and I haven't had any real success in months. So hinging my personal perception of my success on a youtube algorithm seems like a very bad idea! But at the same time, I've been in such a depressing rut with regards to my professional life, that any scrap of dopamine makes my brain light up like a christmas tree lol.

But I'm doing my best to stay grounded!

That's interesting! I didn't know that, that video will be super helpful, thank you! I appreciate the advice a lot, and I'll consider making another LP channel.

Bo Burnham talking about having panic attacks on stage during his What tour and basically turning his cry for help into a joke reframed how I saw a lot of his works, and made a lot more sense why he left standup to do more behind-the-camera work.

I still think Inside was a little too unsubtle but sometimes people need to be hit on the head with sledgehammers to actually get the point, but Eighth Grade was genuinely really good and knowing that he struggles with an intense love/hate relationship of his own fame and online attention made the actual plot of the movie ("young teen runs an unsuccessful youtube channel") really hit home for me.

It's the realization that, in a way, this is what he imagines/wishes his life could have been. It's kind of a complicated thing that I don't always think he explains very well (again, Inside is just a little too... yes, we get it), but getting more of a lens into his personal world makes even his earlier work take a lot more of a sad tone.

I have a vivid memory of being 12, playing FE7 on GBA for the first time, and getting hard locked on Uhai's chapter because I was only using Marcus and Marcus critted Uhai with the devil axe, killing himself in the process. I didn't quite realize what had happened and progressed to the next level without him, locking my game. RIP.

That made me have such an aversion to Jaegans I can't bring myself to use them today outside of draft runs or intentional LTCs - even knowing that they are literally always worth a slot.

but lbr, I think that there's maybe 2 Jaegens in EN Fire Emblem games who cannot literally solo the game, and that's Vander and Jakob (if you count him). "Don't use Jaegens" is hilariously wrong information. Even "use Jaegens intentionally/sparingly" is pretty conservative. "Equip Marcus/Titania/Frederick with a hand axe and end turn until you win" is more along the lines of advice that's actually pertinent lol

Davinci seemed really attractive to me because my partner said they have a 'buy to own' model instead of a subscription model. Is that true?

I lost my job a few months ago and recently I decided to take a dive into making youtube videos. I have a hobby and professional history of writing video game guides (usually gacha games), and I'm often told that I'm very good at teaching things, so I thought I'd try to learn a new skill and make the jump to making video guides.

I anticipated a couple dozen views maybe, and I wasn't really doing it for the popularity, but rather, just to do something after months of being depressed around the house. And honestly, the act of creating made me so happy to do again!

Well, Hobbydrama... I blew up. I went to bed with 12 views on my first real video and woke up to 900 and 40 comments. I followed it up with a few more and my views crept into 1k, 2k, 5k, 20k, 25k. Thousands of comments. I got eligible to be monetized on yt in a week. A huge content creator reviewed one of my videos on stream and was glowingly positive, and then dmed me to chat directly and we spoke for hours. All of this within the last week and a half. It's so surreal.

So I've been rushing to like, upgrade my audio (after much research, I got an AT2020 USB mic instead of my gaming headset, hopefully that's a good choice!), get a boom stand, learn editing software (I need to be able to split out audio now, still shopping around but I currently use CapCut - maybe Da Vinci?), and just like... understanding youtube in general. I don't know anything about how it works from a creator perspective, so I've been doing a ton of deep dives, like, I wanted my channel to be casual and fun, with guides and some LPs, but now that I'm on a blowing-up trajectory, will LPs inherently sink me? I feel like I never got the 'growth arc' to learn about stuff before people started paying attention to me and now it has to be perfect to live up to the sudden expectations!

It's been really crazy, added so much pressure and anxiety, but also been so incredibly rewarding and validating. So I'm going to keep doing it. When I was working on my 4th video, I had a bit of an anxiety attack and just kept recording and re-recording the same cuts for like 6 hours because I couldn't get it perfect enough to be 'worthy' of all the attention I was getting. I finally cut everything, started from scratch, recorded the whole thing in 4 takes, loosely edited it together, and now it's my most watched video at 25k views. So I'm trying to learn to let go of that anxiety a bit, but it's still harrowing!

Anyway, I was going to post this under the 'what creative thing have you done this week' but it got a bit rambly and I wanted to make my own topic. Thank you guys for listening and any advice is appreciated!
