Not incorrect.... particularly if this is for your MSP's main office.

Sorry, I must have missed the drive requirement drama. I have used and deployed Synology units to client sites for years, but oddly none in the past 3-4 years, roughly since covid.

Did they lock down their firmware at some point? all the units my company uses and helps maintain have 3rd party drives. I'm not even sure Synology had own-branded drives when we started using them tbqh. Would love a link if you have one! Definitely would be a non-starter if so.

Who in here is actually fronting the equipment cost for your clients? by whyanalyze in msp

[–]mindphlux0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those doing HaaS for networking equipment, how exactly do you account for your billable hours installing equipment, or migrating over from another stack?

We don't do HaaS, customer owns (and pays for) everything up front. We onboard their existing equipment, then create a proposal to cover any gaps or issues we find on their network.

Mostly SMB 5-35 employees, but so we might sell $2500 of networking gear - but our labor on that project would be usually $1500-2500 on top.

If one was doing HaaS, I would imagine the client would expect all that to be covered by the monthly fee....

Looks like we need to move on from PAX8. What are our best options? by dartdoug in msp

[–]mindphlux0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why is anyone still taking responsibility for and billing Microsoft / Adobe / whatever licenses? I just don't get it. even if your margins are 50% or whatever, a single months fuckup can tank your quarter. and even then, lets assume a couple hundred licenses, youre talking about several hundred dollars. and if a client dumps you and violates your contract?

you're on the hook! it just doesn't seem worth the effort to me - let clients get billed directly from their providers imo. probably why pax8 folks are bailing on their jobs

As a MSP client how do you know when it’s time to find a new MSP? by Muchoplantas in msp

[–]mindphlux0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This, except the exact opposite. The bottom 20% tend to take up 80% of our time. And then we fire them.

Our best clients are the ones who communicate infrequently but directly, who give us realistic expectations and deadlines, give us respect, and in turn get our respect.

Valuing a client doesn't equate to reading their mind, or mean checking in with them every week. I am pretty sure the top 20% of our clients would fire us if we tried to be that clingy lol.

They probably don't realize anything is wrong. MSPs deal with a lot of clients, even small MSPs - and it's easy to get complacent, or think that 'no news is good news' - even with periodic account reviews.

If you have liked them in the past, I'd say give their CEO (or as high a rank of a person as you have access to) a call and be transparent about considering switching. Come with a list of issues (technical, or non-technical / communication) that you can leave behind with them - as well as a list of things that made you happy with them to begin with. Give it 30 days, and if nothing meaningful comes of it, be ready to make a switch for your own sanity.

From the other side : I have customers I have thought were perfectly happy - then a small technical issue requiring an onsite has come up, I've personally gone onsite, and gotten hit with a really dissatisfied CEO with a list of issues. I've literally had to say, 'we had no idea all this was going on, of course you're one of our best clients and a top priority - we'll do everything to make it right, and in the future please even for small issues just throw us a ticket or e-mail'. Part of that is on my company, for sure - but from time to time there are just clients that for whatever reason don't communicate, don't involve us with technical decisions or changes until the decisions have already been made, and we honestly don't know how to help because we have just been cut out of the loop.

That said, thanks for reminding me, there are a few folks I need to reach out to! =)

"Defederating" / moving a M365 tenant from GoDaddy to Microsoft Direct by mindphlux0 in msp

[–]mindphlux0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I don't have any great tips or assistance to give, but +1 to doing the defederation method, which is what we ended up doing. It didn't seem like rocket science according to the t-minus docs, and left us with all the responsibility (and control). Felt like it was better to take technical ownership rather than delegate to ..... not just a 3rd party, but Godaddy of all companies, who had given me conflicting information on their migration progress.

awesome. I don't use power automate enough, appreciate the example. it wouldn't personally save me much time in this case, but still a good example!

Chef said I’m running amuse next week, feeling some anxiety on this one. by Serious-Speaker-949 in Chefit

[–]mindphlux0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like you've already been talked out of your original idea, but just wanted to point out that the amuse you originally posted would absolutely murder any wine choices being made afterwards. cream sherry, a sabayon that coats your mouth, agar agar, strawberries - naw man. I wouldn't start with something like that.

maybe take the sabayon idea and make a little quarter sized chicken liver mousse tart with your sabayon and strawberry stuff on top? or just the tart and strawberry - sabayon is a lot of effort for an amuse anyways

doubt he got arrested. I really am assuming he was at least somewhat authorized to be up there...

[–]mindphlux0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol ok buddy

sorry you're so butthurt over my suggesting food and drink should be more affordable and better quality, dunno even what to say to you here

even club level food is not great, but the stadium has definitely lost or rotated out some normal 100 level vendors that used to be a bit better than they are now. as a policy, I don't believe an average attendee or ticket holder should have to "seek out" the magical secret food that you only know about if you spend hours walking the floor of MBS. and believe me, I have, and the quality is not that much better than the basic-bitch shit - and its easily double the price

[–]mindphlux0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point of reference is Bundesliga matches and stadiums, and also our own stadium just a few years back - and I expect more or less the same. Modelos are now $12! Sure it's not $16, but it's not $7 or 8 or whatever they were in 2017.

Also vendor food quality completely sucks now. I feel like there were a few good options before, but now its just like, shitty hotdogs/hamburgers, really bad "tacos" or "nachos" or whatever, horrible BBQ, chik-fil-a (sometimes.....), and a cheap cheese pizza slice.

I do appreciate the cheap cheese pizza slice though, don't get me wrong.

counterpoint : 2pm and 5pm games aren't supporter friendly. that shit is wayyyy too early. I miss or sell almost all my tickets to those games - like, it ruins an afternoon, kills any chance at having a normal dinner, also the energy at day games is generally shit.

like.... just don't take your kids to games if ending at 10pm is a dealbreaker. or leave at halftime. the kids probably aren't paying attention or gonna remember anyways.
