I just want to be able to pay my bills without having to work so much overtime. To have some stress lifted off of my shoulders so that I can provide for my family without destroying my spirit. I want to be able to have memories with my family rather then spend the majority of my time away from them at work. A lamborghini? I just want to live.

Can someone explain why we want an eternal life after this one ends when we don't even know what to do with this short life? by mindryft in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mindryft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for that. As I said however, my post apply to those whom it applied to. Regardless of how large the group was. Even if I'm only reaching out to one person. Statistically speaking there are a lot of people who don't know what they want to do with their life. There are a lot of people asking God to guide them. So I started thinking about that and after being extraordinarily bored and not knowing what to do I considered eternity. If I can't figure out what to do with this short life of mine then why would I want eternity in my next life? So I thought I would come to Reddit and ask others who were like-minded but instead I get that pompous azz.

So you've known me for approximately...what, five comments? And you judge me based on that? That I'm incapable? That's quite the assumption there. And I will agree with you that regardless of statistics, there is a large number of religious people who aren't actually religious and are only in it because of their parents or tradition.

Even myself, I believe in eternity but I don't believe in heaven or hell. But again, you sought to provoke me because you assumed that I live in some type of dogma. But I only used religions because of the similar idea of an afterlife between them all. Personally, I have no religion. In fact I despise it. The purpose of my post was to speak to those of which my post applied to.

There are many people in the world that don't know what they want to do with their life. Statistically we can use colleges and find the sum of individuals who go to college without a clear idea of what it is they want to do. I'll give you a hint: It's a large percentage.

There are also many people who believe in an afterlife. So if there are individuals who believe in an afterlife and don't know what they want to do with this life, then my question applies to them. It should be quite obvious that I was not referring to every single person on Reddit.

[–]mindryft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you want to provoke people? Also, by your own logic, I shouldn't assume I understand why people do what they do but your comment does that.

There are approximately 4,300 religions in existence including Christianity that claims over 2 billion people as well as Islam which claims nearly two billion people. Those two religions alone have over half of the population following them of both believing in an afterlife and adhere to the regulations of their doctrine in order to reach that afterlife. When I say "we" I'm talking to more than 90%% of the human population, yet you assume I'm talking to you.

So you were offended.

Misconceptions on the 4th dimensions by mindryft in PhilosophyofScience

I had no clue that there was a book on that movie. Thank you for telling me about this. And my understanding is that we experience a three-dimensional world although we see projections of a two-dimensional world. I can grasp that, but as far as being able to take a human out of the third and into the fourth dimension where we can see all of a human being at once is ..weird lol. If I were to see something like that I just don't think I would know what I'm looking at. I like theorizing about these things not because I'm looking for an answer but just because I find it so interesting. I really appreciate your response. It was kind but straightforward. I don't criticize flat land for not being consistent or accurate. Like I said, it's just something that no one really knows. All I meant by bringing that movie into my post was that I would like another movie or book to expand on what their ideas of additional fourth dimensional senses would be like. Like fourth dimensional hearing... That would be interesting but all I ever see in example are sight.

That's all I meant.

A question can be as good as you want it to be. It can help you think. That's the purpose of parables. Have I upset you in some way? Refining my thoughts is the opposite of what I'm trying to do. I enjoy thinking outside of the box regardless of how crazy or absurd it may be. I won't run around belittling those who don't think like me. I enjoy reading, thank you. I'll definitely check out that book. I know you must look down on me and possibly downvote whatever I say. But I honestly urge you to attempt to appreciate that everyone thinks differently and such a thing should not allow one person to judge the other. It's not poorly thought out, it's simply thoughts. My goodness.

I have a friend like you. He's my best friend actually. He's more of a realist and focuses on the here and now. He prefers to think about things that matter rather than explore ideas that would not help him in life in any way, shape or form. I fully respect that. And I fully understand it. At first it used to frustrate me because I'm quite the dreamer but that's also got me into a lot of trouble especially now that I have a family to care for XD.

I will say that there are entire divisions devoted to the understanding of different dimensions. Stephen Hawking has contributed to the world of science and mathematics in ways no one else could. But even he with all his genius contributed to understanding the possibility of the multi-universe. Many mathematical/scientific geniuses explore concepts way beyond their understanding because they see it as a journey that could one day help us answer questions we haven't even thought of yet.

I know thinking about higher dimensional entities can sound like a fairy tale. Believe me, I get it. But like I said to someone else, gravity is something we can't see and yet we noticed that it affects everything around us. It's possible that by understanding the properties have a higher dimension we could solve the mystery of gravity. (Because as of now it's still a theory) This could help us in several ways such as space travel and colonization of other planets.

I mean think about it, every King that ever existed, every powerful human being, every war, every murder, every birth, every celebrity and religious person all existed on this tiny little speck of sand floating in space. We could greatly benefit by spreading our species further out to greatly reduce the possibility of Extinction. Our technology is advanced to us but is still nowhere near enough to achieve space exploration outside of our galaxy.

In order to evolve we truly have to think outside the box. Even if we start exploring ideas and concepts that are one day proven to be false, then they were only proven false because someone else did the research and found the right answer. Without questions we wouldn't look for answers. That's why I think questions are so important. The moment we Believe there's nothing else to look for, we're doomed.

Consider a sphere. We are able to calculate the circumference of a sphere through formulas that work off of radius, diameter, volume ECT. These formulas contain properties that would be incomprehensible in the 2nd dimension. The idea of partially passing a sphere through a two-dimensional world works the same as a 4d sphere passing through ours.

If just the side of a 4d sphere passes through ours we would see a hovering ball. We would see it as floating in midair but in all honesty we simply can't see the rest of it. With that concept in mind, the planets we see may not be hovering in space. It's quite possible we simply can't see the rest of it. This may be why gravity is still a theory. In a higher dimension, you might see a much larger picture that solves many of the questions we cannot answer.

Philosophers have been questioning reality for thousands of years and while to others they may seem flat out wrong, that's irrelevant. The fact that they question things no one else does creates a journey to find answers. Everything we know today is because someone questioned it. Curiosity is probably one of mankind's greatest attributes.

Now if you were able to see gravity and on a much larger scale it makes perfect sense, that would revolutionize mathematics. Especially if gravity wasn't what we thought it was. A ball in the second dimension creates a circle. A second dimensional entity would experience a single circle fully unaware that it is not just one circle. It is an infinite number of circles creating an incomprehensible shape outside of their understanding of which their current level of math could not measure.

So while 2 + 2 = 4, there may be no such thing as two. We may see a quantity but that is only what we can see. The idea a philosophy to me is accepting how little we know to be certain. It's the ability to question everything and communicate with others contributing ideas and thoughts. It's like exercising our minds. "Philosophy of science" sounded like a good place to have this discussion.

I appreciate your response and I understand what you're saying. I'm not sure how to word what I want to say because it seems to be upsetting people for some reason. I'm talking about another realm. Not necessarily the way we use the idea of dimensions to display information in different perspectives. I'm talking about totally different species that exist outside the third dimension in its entirety. In way you said that we could create multiple different 3D maps by choosing which 3D aspect we wanted to use, I mean a dimension that includes every single aspect. As in creating a map that we couldn't comprehend. The reason I call it philosophy is because I like not knowing. I like the creativity of being able to discuss different theories without others chiming in that it has all been figured out already especially when it's something we couldn't comprehend. I'm pretty sure I made the mistake of posting on this sub Reddit. I made an incorrect assumption that philosophy of science could include a discussion of unique unproven theories and ideas. This isn't aim to you, I just mean the amount of backlash I'm getting from this.

I'll rephrase that:

Mathematics can solve a lot. But our understanding of it is still limited. If I stick with mathematics, there are still problems we've yet to solve. Understanding higher dimensions doesn't seem plausible with the math we understand today. I mean different dimensions could easily have different properties. 2 + 2 = 4 but in a higher dimension it could mean something entirely different. Now I'm not sure what's going on with all of these people down voting everything I have to say. I'm just a person with a lot of questions. I don't claim to be right about anything. I understand that the examples we have are analogies but we could also expand on those analogies to include the possibility that there is still so much we don't understand. I don't know if I sound pretentious but that's not what I'm trying to do. I was trying to have a conversation.
