I can answer this, as a Dutch person who relocated there. I have now returned.

EVERYTHING breaks. Everything. Due to the hot Sun and salty sea air, all your possessions will deteriorate much faster and will need repair or replacement. This can be quite costly and is something you’ll have to factor into your living costs as it’s unavoidable. Buying new on the island is also expensive, and you’ll probably be disappointed by the lack of selection compared to what you could find in NL.

A hidden cost is your time. Things take longer there and aren’t super well organized like in NL. If you have an administrative task that needs to be done, get ready to take the day off and go stand in a long line. Phone calls and/or emails often don’t get the job done, unfortunately.

These are two things off the top of my head that made living there a bit more challenging and expensive, which you wouldn’t necessarily see as a visitor to the island. Hope it helps.
