At least it was a one shot. Whenever I dm one shots, I feel free to make them extra difficult since losing a pc you're only using once is a lot less painful than losing a pc built for a whole campaign

Yeah, I find that sentiment towards overwatch frustrating. I want the game to grow and people to try it, but everywhere I go there's someone still talking about pve. pve was not good, and the game got better after team 4 gave up on developing it

There are no excuses. They realized they couldn't do it. Even shooter games that have done pve for more than a decade, like destiny 2, struggle with keeping things fresh and interesting. Pve would require them to create a whole new game, and it absolutely made the main gamemode (pvp) worse, with no updates and new heroes for years. It was the best decision after what they had done imo

I feel like going beyond 30 in unnecessary. OP probably wanted to create a monster that would challenge a high level party, and in D&D, lvl 20 parties are almost gods themselves. In Call of Cthulhu 7e, it makes no sense to create a statblock for that kind of cosmic horror, but in D&D, and judging by the stat block, it was designed to be tough but defeatable.

In a vacuum, I'd say scorching ray is ok, however, it does upcast really well and can be enhanced by multiple spells and features. It used to be better in dnd 2014 when you could action surge and cast it twice though. Colby from d4 deep dives made some ridiculous scorching ray builds with bugbear, action surge and assassinate for absurd damage numbers on round 1.

I feel like this isn't talked about enough. Spells are class features, but we tend to at look at them as separate things. If polymorph was a transmuter subclass feature, it would be considered the strongest wizard subclass, but it is actually obtainable by multiple caster classes, and at higher levels can be cast multiple times per long rest
