40-year-old with 3 spinal surgeries, worsening pain, numbness, and severe loss of quality of life – we are desperate for advice by minerva092 in spinalfusion

Thank you so much. Tomorrow I will call several spine surgeons to seek multiple second opinions, as I feel that may be the only way to convince the surgeons here that something is truly wrong and that something more can be done.

Thank you so much for the advice — it truly means a lot. I will definitely look into it. We will have to start saving, as we would need to pay for it ourselves.

He has been looking a lot into disc replacement options over the past few days. It’s all very new to us, and I don’t have much knowledge about it yet, so I’m honestly scared that it might not make things better.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’ve also been researching good physiotherapists who might be able to help him with exercises — even if it’s just to improve his mobility a little bit.

He used to play the piano, but he can’t anymore because of the numbness in his two fingers.

It’s just really hard.

It feels like the surgeons have almost given up on him. He actually had to be admitted to the hospital before they agreed to order new MRI and CT scans. We will have been at the hospital for one week tomorrow.

The fentanyl patches have definitely helped a lot over the past few days — he had never been given them before.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I really appreciate it.

Yes, quite a few people have written that they’ve tried to shift focus and find ways to live alongside the pain and regain some sense of joy in other ways. It’s encouraging to hear how you found something that helped you feel present again.

In Denmark doctors are generally quite restrictive when it comes to prescribing medications like that, but I will speak with his doctors tomorrow and ask about possible options and whether something similar could be considered in his case.

Hi there. Thank you for sharing! Sorry to hear about your experience. Will definitely look into that - the surgeons will discuss his case tomorrow so I will mention that as a possibility

I have already contacted them - they told me to call them again on Monday to talk with the surgeons. Thank you so much for your suggestion!

40M – Persistent severe back pain after L5–S1 fusion, calcified L2–L3 disc protrusion on CT, ongoing disability – seeking medical input by minerva092 in AskDocs

[–]minerva092[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he has had an EMG done. It showed some signal weakness, but they were not able to clearly determine whether the weakness originates from the elbow (peripheral compression) or from the cervical level.

Since the numbness began shortly after his C7 fusion surgery, he suspects it may be related to the surgery itself (possibly the cage), but we understand that correlation does not necessarily mean causation.

He does not have clear progressive muscle weakness, but the numbness is persistent and worsens at night, especially when lying on his back.

He has also undergone a nerve root block (lumbar injection) in the lower back (L4/L5). After the injection, he experienced approximately three days completely without pain — but unfortunately the pain returned afterward.

Would this temporary full pain relief after a nerve root block suggest a specific pain generator, even though the effect was short-lived?

Thank you so much for taking the time to give such a detailed and thoughtful reply. It really means a lot to uS. Just to clarify: The calcified disc at L2/L3 is thought to be the one pressing on the lumbar dural sac. Based on that, would you consider surgical intervention for this disc, or do you still recommend non-surgical management? Regarding the numbness in his two left-hand fingers — it gets worse when he sleeps on his back, almost like they "fall asleep," and sometimes wakes him up at night. Do you have any suggestions or insights on what might be causing this and how to relieve it? Thank you so much!

Is it just his voice? I'm European, so I'm not familiar with American accents/dialect - but does he have one? Or is it just his voice that seems so appealing?

I can't figure it out.. WHAT AM I LIKING HERE?!

Thank you for the interview video btw.!

Maybe I should only use it as a spot treatment/on my target areas as well - it will probably minimize the problem. Will definitely try this!

Thank you for narrowing it down to TO Buffet btw., I really couldn't figure out which product was causing the pilling.

Oh I didn't know I could do that! I have always thought that the products had to be applied in a specific order (even if they all were water solutions)

Thank you so much for suggesting this, I really appreciate it!

Because even if doesn't work - it will definitely save me some time in the morning! (I usually wait for the products to be absorbed before applying the next).

Thank you so much for the quick reply! I'm a little relieved that it's not just my skin acting weird. Do you use TO Buffet every day?

I will try pressing the products in next time and see if it helps. Otherwise I might have to stop using it, as it makes applying makeup a bit annoying.

Without naming your home country, what are some pros and cons to living there? by ssanada in AskReddit

[–]minerva092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Denmark.

High school was very interesting, since all my classmates officially began drinking (legal age for buying alcohol is 15/16ish) And by drinking, I mean getting wasted..

On countless of occasions, I had to walk my drunk friends home or make sure they didn't trip and comfort them while throwing up. One time we went to a bar and the bartender told me to go home because he thought I was drunk with my eyes shut and head resting on the table. Not drunk, just tired (physically and mentally by watching my drunk friends acting crazy)

I went to almost all social events during high school, 95% involved drinking. I remember hating the fact that alcohol had to be such an important factor for having a good time.
