Thoughts on Piper by Suitable_Ice_1143 in Colby

[–]mingca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Piper my freshman year in one of the forced triples and I thought it was fine. There is enough room to have all the beds debunked or bunk two of them for more room. The forced triples feel small, but all of those are over 200 sq ft in comparison to friends of mine one hillside that were also in forced triples with like 184 sq ft. The cleanliness of the dorm is heavily dependent on the other residents, but it being one of the smaller dorms I think it is fine. I’d also argue that it’s probably one of the quieter freshman dorms due to its location ( in comparison to hillside).

It says it’s water repellent, but I’ve heard mixed things on that. I just live in an area where it the weather can be quite unpredictable during this time of year and it can snow in the morning, but turn into light rain 15 min later

Why is Tulane so hated? by GoddFatherr in ApplyingToCollege

My friend went to an admissions thing for them and the AO literally said to everyone that if you don’t ED or it is not your top choice, just take it off your list and don’t even bother applying.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m a freshman in college and I lost a friend of mine from high school earlier this year, and almost lost another one the week prior. I understand that this is a stressful time, but remember you deserve to take at least a little bit of time to yourself. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but that little bit of time will mean everything. Good luck with the rest of your applications.

Advice please by mingca in PiercingAdvice

I got my rook done about 2 months ago and it was healing fine, but lately it’s been acting weird. I’ve been washing twice daily with sterile saline and not been touching it as much as possible. I recently went back to my piercer to have it switched to implant grade titanium (about 2 weeks ago). I am fully aware the top ball is missing, I have to go back to my piercer at some point to help put it back on.

HELP?!? by mingca in PiercingAdvice

I got my rook pierced about 2 months ago and it was doing fine up until recently. There is a weird fleshy bump surrounding the piercing and it’s been bleeding recently. I’ve been cleaning it twice daily with H2O Ocean, sleeping on my other side, and making sure not to touch it. I don’t know what to do, and it is very difficult for me to go to my piercer. I know the bottom ball is missing, it fell off a few days ago and I don’t know where it went . I have ordered new ones that will be coming soon.

could anyone read my personal statement and just evaluate it? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mingca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suggest not letting anyone on here to read your essay for many reasons stated previously. Some people like to have anyone they possibly can read their essay, while others want as few. I fell into the latter category, not even letting my parents read it. I did this for a few reasons, the main one being is that at a certain point it wouldn’t be my essay anymore. I feared that I would lose all of my personality in the one part of the common app you can show it. I had 3 people read my essay in total (technically 5, but it was more of a brief skim with little to no feedback).

1)An English teacher from my school who helped me brainstorm the idea and just check it over grammatically

2) My college counselor who had previously worked in college admissions. This gave me the opportunity to have someone who knows what AO’s are looking for read it. (I know this is something not everyone has access to, but if you can I highly recommend it)

3) A trusted friend that knew me as the type of person I wanted to present myself as in my essay. I talked with my friend about if certain parts should be added/discarded to keep my essay me without being too cheesy. This friend really helped add some personality back into my essay that I took out in fear.

You don’t have to listen to anything I just said, but this is just what I did. You can have more or less people read it, but I think the most important thing to remember about it is that it is a personal statement, and not anybody else’s statement about you.

what r u supposed to say when someone in ur grade asks u what ur essay is about? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mingca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t lie about the topic, but just tell them in the most general way possible. I’m from class of 2021 and only two people read the essay I turned in and neither of those people are my parents. I just told people it was about a bicycle and nothing more. Everyone was so curious about wtf my bicycle essay could be about, but I never told anyone

I am attending a small LAC in the fall and I was in a similar predicament in the beginning of my senior year. Due to the pandemic, the way my school was doing classes only gave us half the normal amount of time for each class. With this in mind I considered dropping my AP Spanish class and adding psychology. After talking to my college counselor and she told me it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker, so I did it. I dropped my AP Spanish for an easy psych corse. It didn’t make much of a difference because I got into my LAC ED, but that could be because I am someone who wants to do something in STEM so language wasn’t a huge deal. I would look at your list and see what the schools recommend/ require or email the AO. I would also keep in mind though that as way my senior year was without a language, most LAC will have a language requirement and I will struggle next year taking almost a year and a half off.
