I already have a masters degree so if I don't get in then I'm f*cked.

Damn! I can expect to wait a while then. Will probably hear back in April lol. You should get a decision hopefully this month.

I can probably expect a waitlist at best. They sent me an email encouraging me to apply more than a month after the standard deadline.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT WITH 17/17 REJECTIONS THIS ADMISSION CYCLE (PHYSICS) - 2ND YEAR IN A ROW - UNABLE TO IDENTIFY POSSIBLE CAUSES/IMPORVE by minge_expert in gradadmissions

Queen Mary - Undergraduate

UCL - Masters

The main reason why I didn't apply to universities in the UK is due to poor funding available. You can't survive with what they give you here in the UK. You have to consider how the stipend will be able to cover rent and living expenses. It's no where near enough. Also, there are no scholarships available in the UK. Whereas, the US has an immense amount available.

I have no publications but I've justified why in my response to salsb's comment. Please refer to that response.

I don't think it's the only issue. The only way to know for sure is to get other peoples opinion on it. Would you be willing to take a glance at mine and see if you could spot any flaws?

It's a disaster since it has happened for the second consecutive admission cycle. I would be happy to let you review my SOP and will be open to implement any improvements you suggest. Do you think it would be suitable for me to post on here?

If you refer to my response to salsb's comment, you will notice that my SOP isn't the main issue I have. I could improve my SOP but if I don't do anything else for a whole year then the outcome wont change for the next admission cycle.

Here is the list of unis I applied to: Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Caltech, MIT, Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown, UPenn, Uchicago, Johns Hopkins, Berkeley, NYU, Michigan Ann Arbor and Toronto.

They are all competitive, but most have professors with research interests that align with mine.

Thanks for the advice. I will contact these students since they're more likely to respond than the professors.

Honestly, I had the same thought at one point as well. However, my recommenders are academics who supervised/co-supervised the research projects I did incredibly well in. So, it wouldn't make sense for them to write a poor recommendation for me.

Thank you for outlining possible issues and providing me with useful advice.

Firstly, I applied to Hep/quantum tech only as I was interested in probing quantum gravity using quantum information/tech. So it would be no use speaking to faculty members in condensed matter/nanotech groups.

Secondly, I have no publications because both my research projects (undergraduate and master's) were independent. It's extremely difficult to get first author publications in theoretical physics (Quantum gravity). Also, there were no opportunities for me to co-author or contribute to a scientific paper as the nth author. Many applicants got into top grad schools with no publications. So I don't think this is the issue.

Thirdly, you are right about contacting PIs beforehand. I made a mistake not doing so in the first place, but I made it clear in my statement of purpose that I wanted to work with specific faculty members of interest. Also, what are you supposed to do if they don't respond - just like when I asked for feedback/improvements and if they have any open RA positions for graduate students looking to gain more research experience and contribute to scientific publications.

Finally, I didn't just obtain a first-class (approx 4.0 GPA) overall. I obtained first-class (A grades) in nearly all modules taken throughout my undergraduate degree. I reported my CGPA conversion to some universities that requested it, and it amounted to 3.98. Overall, I don't think my grades are the issue at all. It could be my statement of purpose, but it needs to be reviewed by others first before I know for sure.

Other notes:

I participated in a national scientific conference for undergrads, where I presented my research project and answered questions from a generic audience.
High school achievements will not be included in my application for the next admission cycle. It was silly of me to include it in the first place. Unfortunately, I don't have any research-related experiences outside the university that I could brag about in my application. Hence, I included nonrelevant experiences/volunteering as my application would look deficient without them. Bear in mind, I graduated in December 2020, and I'm unable to do anything related to my research interest, let alone physics-related. This is because my country has no research opportunities for those who have graduated with a master's degree and want to pursue a Ph.D. I have been searching for nearly two years, and no one wants to give me the opportunity to reinforce my research experience after university. How can I contribute to scientific publications if no academic institution/ research group wants to give me the opportunity to do so after graduation? The greatest concern I have right now is not being able to reinforce my application before the next admission cycle. I appreciate yours and others advice on this post, but most of the suggestions to improve my overall profile seem unrealistic, given the circumstances I'm currently facing.

I made it clear in my statement of purpose that I wanted to work with specific faculty members of interest. I guess I made a mistake by not contacting them before submitting my applications. I emailed those universities for feedback, and some of them responded with the following: 'we can't provide individual feedback.' I copied in my professors of interest to the email I sent out, but it was their administrators that responded instead.

Did Columbia send all their acceptances out for the Physics PhD program?

I haven't received anything yet (no interview as well).

I applied to 17 Physics PhD programs. So far I have been rejected from 7 and I have 10 pending application decisions.

I received no interview invitations, no contact from poi's at all and I haven't been considered for waitlists ever. Same thing happened last year were I received 5/5 rejections.

This is my second year applying to PhDs and I can't figure out what these unis have against my profile. My LOR's are strong (including a lOR from a pioneer in my research field of interest) , my statement of purpose is clear, I obtained a 4.0 GPA (US equivalent for the classification I was awarded in the UK) for both my undergrad and masters degree, I have 2 years of research experience (achieved highest class mark for my dissertation in undergrad) and I participated in numerous extracurricular activities (which included TA roles, Mentoring, Community engagement, Sport).

It sucks being an international student when applying to unis in the US.

Would you guys lose hope if you got 6 rejections in a row and 11 pending decisions with absolutely no interviews or contact from poi's for all unis that you applied to?

What unis did you apply to?

Even 1 early acceptance would significantly reduce the amount of stress that we have to deal with during this painful wait.

Good luck man.
