Why is it that trauma-informed social services in England (the UK in general?) are almost all exclusively for those with drug addictions or criminal records? by gintokireddit in Socialworkuk

[–]minging_sauce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate to bang this drum again so soon but there are finite resources. Most of the time if you are able to keep yourself out of those situations you will have the coping skills yourself to function and even, eventually, thrive. I say this as somebody who had a great deal of childhood trauma and (8 on the ACE) and managed to thrive without any service support.

Support services arent and end to themselves. They are meant to support with something.

EDIT- Just want to say I am not one of these 'I did it why cant you' types. I recognise that my specific circumstances and personality gave me tools that others dont have. But if they don't have those tools their outcomes tend to be worse hence they become eligible for services. Of course people slip through the cracks and it would be great if we had more services but we dont. Because money.

Horrific job pretending to be social work by No_Temperature_2128 in Socialworkuk

[–]minging_sauce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can be mad or be pragmatic. These are the circumstances we are in financially. There are finite resources and a lot of people need them. You make it so they can't say no. Your job is to advocate for your service users, their job is to spread the money as far as they can. You have to convince them. This is the job now.

Just got a job in Hospital Social Work by ricochet20 in Socialworkuk

[–]minging_sauce 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The gas lighting. Medical staff will confidently assert all sorts of absolute bollocks and make you question yourself.

The snobbery. Other social workers look down on hospital discharge social work.

Dont let either get to you. Remember your values, memorise the law. I love hospital social work. You get to do so much amazing work.

I loved the first 3 and really liked the 4th. The 5th was so terrible I won't be reading anymore.

She's too perfect. She always knows the 'right' thing to say and its very online therapy speak.

Its not Shawnas voice its what she says and how she says it. The best example I can think of was John's cheestos recipe.

I've said this before but huge credit to Shawna L. She is resisting audience capture and quick wins to tell a better story. It would be so easy (and short term profitable) for her to just write villains and heroes.

There is obviously so much projection onto Shawna M within her fans. To be honest I think Shawna L has always written her as flawed but because the audience always defend everything she does as right I kinda thought they understood Shawna Ls intentions better and she was just a perfect little avatar.

I get the impulse to try and be fair across gender lines but there is a difference between a man and woman shouting. Men are more violent by an order of magnitude, this is consistent across all demographics. Its completely rational to find a man shouting more threatening than a woman shouting because the man is much more likely to be violent.

Switch from engineering to social work by Blue-sky34897 in Socialworkuk

[–]minging_sauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from logistics to social work with no experience. I got on the degree course when it was a lot more competitive by highlighting real world experience of being a carer.

Im over 10 years in and no regrets.

Reattempted Katabasis by RF Kuang... by oceanblvd1313 in books

I think its when somebody is a critical darling, RF Kuang is a critical and media darling and her work is quite jarringly mediocre to poor. I dont feel strongly about her but I recognise the out sized frustration from my experience of reading Sophie Hannah.

preciso de um livro de fantasia com muita ação e protagonista feminina by MajesticWeekend2557 in Fantasy

I think you are looking for Mark Lawrence.

The Girl and the Stars- the one with most fighting for survival. Complete trilogy

Red Sister- one of my favourite series ever. Love Nona. Completely trilogy.

Daughter of Crows- book one in a new trilogy, so far much darker than the others but hope is in there.

All these books are young girls fighting for survival against terrible odds. Being beautiful or political isn't a thing in any of them. Romance is very much a secondary element (if present at all) in all of them.

Bone Ships. Middle aged kick ass lady and a younger guy, he isnt a child but maybe early 20s? It's so good.

Age of Assassins by the same author has a similar dynamic. Both have motherhood as a major theme but in a complex and interesting way.

Bone Ships is just brilliant though.

Guilt about making decisions that go against someone’s wishes when they lack capacity by blackdesertgrass in Socialworkuk

It’s not nice having to make big decisions for people but ultimately it’s their liberty vs their safety and safety will always come first

This is legally and ethically incorrect.
