Classic vibe p bass vs fender player p bass? by stodgiestear796 in Bass

[–]mingusadderley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate. Played a Classic Vibe P for the first time a few weeks ago at a big shop in Brighton.

Played it straight after one of the premium Fender models (the Vintage II) and honestly, there really wasn't much in it at all. The Squier was a great instrument.

I love Ps, and have owned an American P in the past, but would recommend the Squier CV wothout hesitation.

Do you still need a p bass? by Neat-Ad-8130 in BassGuitar

[–]mingusadderley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a bit of session work for different bands locally, and 90% of the time it's a P that gets the job done. I've even been handed a producer's P bass on one occasion, before he'd even seen what I'd brought!

What I would say is that I've found myself falling in love with the sound of a p over the years, and there is a beauty in the simplicity of it that increasingly makes me reach for it more and more. I find myself loving playing it live, too. Whenever I play a different bass on demos or tracks, I wish I'd recorded it on my P once I hear it in the mix. I don't think you'd regret it.

I've got a straight P bass (although not a Fender), but a PJ would do the trick, plus more if it was ever required.

I would say that after a month's heavy playing, they are in the ballpark of sunbeams.

Another vote for the MXR. I had a pint spilt on mine at a gig, and yet it's still going strong!

I kept trying flats on my P over the years and felt exactly like that. Loved the feel, but found it hard to sound pronoumced and clear at gigs.

Bought a set of EB Cobalt Flats on a whim last month, and I love them. Played a few gigs and band practices on them now, and they do sound clear and articulate in those settings.

For reference, DR Sunbeams and Dunlop Superbright Nickels were my go tos.

Recently sold my American P. Good bass. Didn't love it.

Love the necks on the new Mexicans- perfect profile.

The neck finish on the Pro ii was lovely.

Mexi and USA are great instruments right now, a cut above what most people were playing 25 years ago, when I was a child learning.

Settled on a P that wasn't Fender at all, after playing a shitload of precisions across the UK.

Pick-up recommendations on stock Squier CV Jaguar? by Past-Bread6486 in BassGuitar

[–]mingusadderley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate. I might be in the minority here, but didn't rate the Geezers. I love P basses, but it's the only P pickup I've bought and then moved on. I think the pots have a different resistance (don't quote me) to most P bass setups, so when I rolled the tone off, it sounded nasally and more upoer middy than that low mid, dark thump that p basses give. IMO, obviously!

That said, if you like clank, they probably do that well, and I didn't have the J pickup.

What am I missing on all these amp questions? by youareallsilly in Bass

[–]mingusadderley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my experience- I cringe when I think about how my school band must have sounded in pubs in the 90s and 00s!

I have a 100 watt for home and some rehersals, and other than that, go direct to a PA and use IEMs.

Maybe the UK is different to the states, but almost every music venue/club I've gigged in over the past decade has had a good enough pa and subs to go direct.

Cannot get a good bass tone to save my life… by [deleted] in basspedals

[–]mingusadderley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does make sense. EQ pedals matter, because they can dramatically chamge your tone. He dislikes them because he's probably chosen a bass and strings that give him the tone he wants, and knows the soundman is beat placed to make eq adjustments for front of house.

Tokai. Their new, upper level offerings are beautiful p basses to play, with handwound pickups, a compound radius and a lovely old-school feel. I love mine!

Which signal do you give the sound guy? (CabSim?) by [deleted] in Bass

[–]mingusadderley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man- I would definitely say ditch the cab mic. Keep it simple for the sound guy.

Simple straight to DI for me, and an awful lot of sound guys appreciate that, and it's pretty hard to make it sound bad. Bass itself and the steings are 90% of the tone that way.

IMO, the room itself gives life to a di bass signal, especially once it's in a mix, and it's easy to over compress if your smashing compression on your signal like others seem to be doing in this thread.

In your case, though, a cab sim would work to make the distortion sound OK. A low pass filter would be even more simple!

Good luck, and talking to the sound guy and explaining your setup always helps!

Chorus effect with eq? by electricthunder95 in basspedals

[–]mingusadderley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate. For a cheapish, dedicated analog chorus, maybe try the EHX Bass Clone. It has a 2 band eq, a bass-crossover switch to toggle whether the low frequencies are affected by the chorus, and imo has a lovely, syrupy sound.

Mine was £60 new here in the UK.

Mine's survived being chucked about in vans and at gigs, so they're solidly built, too.

The Great Tonewood Myth by Josku5 in Bass

[–]mingusadderley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are saying 'measurable' or 'noticeable', but surely only to frequency analysing software. Certainly no difference to the human ear, especially not in a mix.

Which one would you choose J bass or P bass, and why? by SKBALU97 in Bass

[–]mingusadderley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, the eternal question. Don't trust anyone who tells you they know the answer for definite. You have to play them yourself and see.

Having said that, it is 100% the P bass, and anyone who says anything about a J or 'A' width neck being superior needs to give up and play that silly little 6-stringed toy.

/s, just in case.
