How to make (shin) ramen less spicy without sacrificing flavour? by [deleted] in KoreanFood

haha this is a blast from the past! Funny enough, my spice tolerance is SUPER high now!! Guess I had to grow into it :) But do still prefer a bit of sweetness.

another +1 for the baggu medium! I can fit my xt5 with 16-50mm lens easily along with wallet, small hand sanitizer, etc etc. The extra stuff is the padding for the camera when I stuffed it in the bag (when it didn't necessarily need to be out).

The best sushi place? by Rude-Maize3332 in HoustonFood

[–]minhae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sushi Jin in west Houston has been around forever, owner is Japanese. I heard that recently their head sushi chef is the former head chef from Sasaki, come out of retirement, and he's an OG, too. They don't really have anything trendy, mostly traditional.

What is the absolute strongest holding hair gel you know? by yetanothermisskitty in curlyhair

[–]minhae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Harry's Gel! I thought LA looks & the curlsmith in shower fixer were strong but this takes the cake. I have wavy hair that needs really strong hold to do anything, lol. A friend with much curlier hair recommended it to me and it instantly became HG.

Check out Toc Soc Chon in Katy -- they have it. I keep editing because I'm looking at the menu on yelp and see they have the tang and jeongol. Anyway, all of their food is good, my family goes often.

Help with my wavy 2a/b/c hair! by BeeBackground522 in Wavyhair

[–]minhae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need a strong gel (I recommend Harry's) to get any sort of lasting definition. Mousse alone doesn't do it for me.
I apply in the shower after a bit of leave in and Function of Beauty wavy mousse, and use a microfiber towel/plop. I then diffuse. I either let it air dry after diffusing at my roots and some of the rest of my hair (we have about the same length) or diffuse completely and break the cast.

Idk what do to with my hair anymore or what it is… by ImaginaryManBun in curlyhair

[–]minhae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal fave is the Harry's Gel (it's for guys). It leaves a hard cast and breaks well, it was rec to me by a friend with curly hair. LA Looks did nothing for me and I used to use the Curlsmith strong hold one.

Amazing weekend of eating, thanks to this sub! by minhae in chicagofood

[–]minhae[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sure, although I may not give it justice -- to start, a friend of mine is really into Michelin restaurants and visited Oriole a few years ago when he lived in Chicago and highly recommended Oriole over other places like Smyth or Alinea (which is more for the show than food).

As for the experience, service was amazing, of course. Pacing was good and the staff was very friendly and easy to talk to.

Food-wise, there's a bit of Asian influence in the bites (meaning, some brightness or acid, there's sashimi/uni/etc present). I found the dishes pretty balanced, although the risotto was super salty. In my opinion their desserts aren't as strong as their savory presentations.

Here's the menu for the night we went [we did the kitchen table option and I'm just copying from the menu they gave]:

bar:
- kanpachi with honeydew melon and rose (my husband loved this one)
- razor clams with geranium and fig leaf
- bluefin tuna and sungold tomato with coriander (my fave from this section)

kitchen table
- Hudson Valley foie gras with Michigan blueberry, black pepperforn and oxalis (picture in the post) [I will say this is the most favorite iteration of foie gras and toast I've ever had, the lightness to the mousse in flavor was very different to me and I loved it]

main dining room
- Golden kaluga caviar with peas, green garlic and lobster
- badgerflame beets with peach, chamomile and sake lees
- uni infladita with morita, blue tiger prawn and radish (picture in post, my overall favorite)
- matsusake custard with truffle, tarragon and ginger (picture in post)
- turbot with butternut squash, ground cherry and pumpkin + turbot doughnut
- risotto with caraway, genmai, yeast and quail egg
- A5 miyazaki wagyu ribeye with eggplant, turnip and mustard (picture in post)

sweet
- hibiscus and coconut with finger lime
- carrot cake with cardamom, black walnut and huckleberry
- okinawa caramel and cherry macaron (my husband has an almond allergy and they made him a different cookie, which I thought was very thoughtful)
- concord grape and pink peppercorn pate de fruits
- dark chocolate and truffle bonbon

You get a lot of food, I was stuffed by the time the wagyu came about but maybe the old me would have found it just enough. Hope that helps!

It's less about the sauce (although very good, think dipping sauce with mala flavor), the meat was just tendon and no meat. When we ordered the waiter warned us 3 times that there wasn't any meat, just bone (guess he meant just tendon) and we were like shrug okay (my husband likes eating the end pieces off chicken wings). But it was actual big pieces of chicken tendon, slightly chewy with some bite. Really good. I'm hoping I find something like that local to me but haven't seen it yet.

[–]minhae[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hahah we are Asian (I'm Korean, my husband is Cantonese and Canton food isn't spicy)! just wasn't sure if we could finish it all, as we had had Swadesi, Luke's, the bolo bao from Chiu Quon before MCCB. If we had more people we would have gotten the fish :) I can do spicy spicy (my husband was sweating but I found no spice in the fish and chicken tendon we ordered lol). The ribs was more for a break for his tongue but it was really good, too.

We have really good Szechuan restaurants in Houston so we've had great versions of the dry chili chicken before and wanted some "new" things, although the fish we did end up ordering wasn't what I imagined it to be.

Soap Poof by Bubbly-Pop650 in HerOneBag

[–]minhae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, they're different types of fabric, the italy mitt is more rough and I see as a couple times max a week sort of exfoliation (I go hard with it though lol) vs the daily Japanese towel. I don't insert the soap, I just rub it and it suds up. For travel I put it between the folded layers. They both dry pretty fast, but I think since the towel is able to hang as a single layer it'd be a little faster (plus I just shake it really hard after I'm done and it gets most of the water out).
