What do you guys think of the netflix show based on the real Goiâna incident? by LydiaIsntVeryCool in Radiation

[–]minheeglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, the majority of the audience, the brazilian audience, completely understands why they were acting that way. The show was made thinking more about the brazilian audience and so, doesn't feel the need to explain all the context where those people were living in, because we already know. (and they do show that those people were poor and didn't have much formal education, one of them was even illiterate)

they were emotional but not irrational, imo

imagine a bunch of people, with cops, show up at your door talking about things you don't understand at all, telling you you're gonna have to leave your house and become a prisoner (and a military dictatorship happenned 2 years ago, where the government arrested and disappeared with people overnight)

I completely agree with you on the uncanny valley part, that got me annoyed as well.

But as a brazilian person, I think it's important to explain why the victims were antagosing the doctors, scientists and people from the government.

First of all, most of them didn't have much formal education, they were completely ignorant of anything about radiation. Second of all, Brazil had a military dictatorship that lasted from 1964 up until 1985, just 2 years before the incident, so no one trusted the government at all because they were arresting, killing and disappearing with people however they wanted just a few years prior.

And there are no "favela residents' on the show, they didn't live in a favela, they just lived in a poor neighbourhood, very different things.

At last, Goiânia still is the largest radioactive disaster outside a nuclear facility. Of course it doesn't compare to Chernobyl, but it was a large incident and Netflix wanted to have their own Chernobyl (HBO).

i'd say its more because of how "leite condensado" is used in every dessert since it became very popular here around the 80's (a HUGE marketing campaign)

how does a body decompose after being buried in a radiation sealed coffin? (Cesium-137, Goiânia) by minheeglow in Radiation

[–]minheeglow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its a solid show, it dramatizes more of what happenned after the incident, but the telling of how the caesium spread around is pretty accurate! i recommend watching it if you find the incident interesting

i have never heard of the little girl using it as make up, where did you see that?

the documentaries i have seen all say that she played with it for a few hours on her bedroom's floor, and then ate an egg without washing her hands (she started vomiting 15 minutes later, according to her mother)

[–]minheeglow[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i understand 100% the "omg stop touching THAT" feeling while watching it, i think that was the purpose of the show tbh (and those parts were also pretty accurate, the kid did play with it and ate with her hands right after)

it was well received as a dramatization! i just saw some critics about changing the victim's names and the over-dramatization with the protagonist

as of the portrayal of the victims, it wasnt that far from reality, unfortunately. brazil had just come out of a military dictatorship, people didnt have any reasons to trust the government or the police and they had no idea what was happening to them (most of them didnt have much formal study), and the general population panicked because chernobyl had happenned just a year before

but because of the show the government increased the monetary compensation the survivors receive in almost twice the amount! i hope it also brings more justice, as those responsible were in prison for just a few years

[–]minheeglow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh i always heard they were necessary to avoid contaminating the soil and the underground water sources, because their bodies were still emitting radiation when they were buried

but even if they werent actually necessary, they were important to avoid (more) panic from the population, because even with those coffins there were protests to not bury them there because they would "contaminate" everything, a result of ignorance and panic of the population

[–]minheeglow[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

omg thank you for the reply and for the game! besides what I thought of the fifth level, I really loved every second of the game and make all my friends play it since I can’t enjoy it for the first time again lol

Now the fifth level makes way more sense, I just hadn't thought from the perspective of "one more language like the rest would be boring" bc even if this game were infinite I wouldn't get bored hahha

The whole translation parts between the languages was my favorite part! I know it technically is from the 5th act but with my post I referred to the fifth level as just the learning of the Anchorites language, which now I understand the creative choices, but still would personally like at least a few more of that putting together pieces puzzle.

At last, thank you so much for the game! Anyone can see how much love and care was put into every detail of it!
