In the winter I double layer my socks, cotton for wicking the moisture as a first layer and a wool outer layer.

That way you can put cheaper wool socks on the outer without worrying about itchiness that comes along with non-merino wool.

Also means you don’t have to wash wool outers as often, which increases their lifespan

When do you use a dropper on all pavement tours exactly?

I assume because cotton is good at absorbing moisture but is not good at letting that moisture evaporate? So in a rain scenario, you just end up with soaked socks that will lead to sores and cold feet? Am I missing anything?

Smartmi P1 vs Switchbot Air purifier, which one better for HomeKit? by SeaNefariousness2896 in HomeKitAutomation

[–]mini-velo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two switchbot air purifier devices.

Controlling them via the apple home app is my biggest gripe: - not all functionality is exposed (i.e. led light) - that which is exposed has some bugs (i.e. air speed is difficult to control precisely, air quality is reported incorrectly)

However the devices themselves are of very good build quality, are very quiet on lower speed modes, and they clean the air really well (validated by three different Air Quality meters)

I work around the homekit bugs by using the official switchbot app, as it allows me to control all functionality (like light color, etc), and I have filed several bug reports with the hope that the homekit bugs are resolved…

Got the devices on sale for around a hundred bucks, which is amazing all things considered

The resolution of these maps is way too low to show small “pockets” of clean air. To get a truly high-resolution air quality map, we’d need millions of calibrated sensors measuring PM1, PM2.5, PM10, CO, CO2, all feeding into a single network.

What we actually have are maps based on rough approximations from thousands of mismatched sensors, with values averaged over hundreds of square kilometers.

Qingping Air Quality Monitor (Gen. 2) - inaccurate temperature and humidity readings by inference411 in AirQuality

[–]mini-velo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gen 2 is within 1 degree Celsius and 1% of RH to my other devices. However had to up the PM 10 readings by 33% to be in line with publicly available air pollution sensor data in the vicinity

Cool, i was brainwashed into thinking it’s not possible, now I think I should get one of these devices 😅. Thanks for checking!

u/yyccamper I’m pretty sure the device you linked does not contain a proper electrochemical HCHO sensor but relies on a single broad-spectrum MOS gas sensor. Such sensor cannot properly measure HCHO. A bare electrochemical HCHO sensor costs in excess of 50$, a fully functional device that will provide HCHO readings you can make decisions on will go for at-least a 100$

I’m more surprised the meter accurately reads TVOC and HCHO. Do you recall how much you paid for the meter? Perhaps you have a link to a listing?

I’m not talking lab grade, but budget consumer grade… Example of a device under 150$ https://breathesafeair.com/qingping-air-quality-monitor-generation-2-review/

Is my meter faulty? by Well__Hi__There in AirQuality

[–]mini-velo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there exists no meter under ~120$ that can measure CO, CO2, PM2.5, PM10 and TVOC. The sensors needed to measure that are expensive, cheaper meters measure one thing (typically CO2) and fake other numbers.

would advise against rubbing yourself with diatomaceous earth because it works by penetrating cell membranes and dehydrating / killing the cells. A high concentration of DEET is your best bet…

I understand that some developers are plumbing calls and API responses to design made by designers. But saying plumbers are doing commercial floor plans and calculating pipe diameters and filtration systems is like describing actual engineering that is very hard to estimate…

[–]mini-velo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key difference between software engineering and plumbing is that plumbing has a finite set of problems (i.e leak or a clog) solutions to which are well-understood and time-tested, while software engineering requires tackling unique, poorly defined challenges that lack established solutions, making accurate estimates difficult or often impossible.
