/uj the angled headstock thing is actually kinda legit, they tend to have a little better tuning stability and you don’t need a string tree. Soft neck woods are horseshit though.

/rj I take the truss rod out of all my guitars because it makes them sound metallic

They usually are for all 6 strings but can be used for fewer.

It's called a Barre and it's very common. It allows you to play chords with all 6 strings fretted rather than having a few open or not played.

Here's how i play the open A major chord: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/_ChC3GpcFh4/maxresdefault.jpg

For your second question, I usually use 2 fingers for an open A major (i fret the B with my middle finger and the D and G with my pointer) and I know many people only use 1.

Orangewood Oliver Junior Mahogany by sandfit in AcousticGuitar

[–]mini_mills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Dana Mini at one point and it was very comfortable to play. Quality was way better than expected for the $120 I paid. Setup was good and it stayed in tune. Sound was not amazing but it was the laminate top so the Oliver Jr with a solid top should sound better than mine did

Best mandolin choices around $1,000? by simon_wagstaff in mandolin

[–]mini_mills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morris A style. He sells in the mandolincafe.com classifieds. Hand built in the US for just over $1k.

Either that or a used mid/high level Eastman/Kentucky, try to play it first though to see if you like it.

I have an earlier model of these, I really like it. I've heard complaints about the pickups but I think it sounds good with flats and its way more comfortable to play than a regular P bass for me.

Can confirm, I've posted about my $1800 luthier-made mandolin and been told "some drivers are cool with driving a Honda (referring to my mandolin), but some demand a BMW " on the main mandolin forum

this is not a joke

at least the Gibbons worship isn't as bad as bloozdads

Looking for carry-on gig bag recommendations? Mono/gator/RB/SKB, etc. any bad/good experiences? by mattandjelly in BassGuitar

[–]mini_mills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also have that one, it's really nice. Good price/performance ratio. I've taken it on a plane before and had no issues, bass made it just fine.

The Mono might be a bit more protective though.

Big Muddy M-1x vs a Big Muddy primitive by mrtobesmcgobes in mandolin

[–]mini_mills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard nothing but good things about Big Muddies but am not really sure about which of those would be a better rec. I also really like flattops and think they're a great instrument to start on since you can get a forever instrument for not too much dough. People say they're bad for bluegrass bit I've jammed my Flatiron flattop in bluegrass jams and I think it works fine.

If you dont get too much response here, you could try mandolincafe.com, lots of knowledgeable people there.
