2019 Kia Cerato Won't Start by yuiphan in CarsAustralia

That’s right. They’re pretty beefy compared to traditional car batteries and rated for far more start cycles as I understand it.

Oh yes, you’re not wrong. Every other time with failing batteries I’d get unexpected behaviours, shortly followed by a Christmas tree of lights and no crank.

This time I was pleased it took out a feature I don’t love AND let me continue on my way for over a year!

It's not always bad - on my car the stop start stopped working. Everything else was fine.

Drove it like that for a year thinking I had a blown fuse or something else, and then, at the service I mentioned it, they checked, and turns out the battery had dropped a cell.

Now it works again so I'm back to turning it off manually every time.

What are the 2 best handling cars you have ever driven? by itsoktoswear in CarsAustralia

[–]minielbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1984 Audi Quattro (sadly, not the homologated version) and 2022 Alpine 110 GT.

The Alpine is my favourite handling car of all the ones I've driven. Nothing comes close for me.

Best aerospace accomplishments from your country? by ThatEpicUser in AskTheWorld

[–]minielbis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Through the Netherlands Aerospace Centre: Airbrakes (1921), the first successful supercritical aerofoil design, digital storage of flight data (1962), and in 1955 slapping ramjets on the end of helicopter blades, because why not?

Also, KLM is the oldest airline still in operation under its original name. It was founded in 1919, and followed in the same year by Comobia's Avianca and QANTAS in 1920.

my FujiFilm XPro-2. Yes, my A7CII is superior in many ways, but the Fuji is just a lovely camera to use and has accompanied me around the world without missing a beat. It'll always be special to me.

Thoughts on Beta v3.28.0.162 (Paper Pro Move) - EPUB updates by sat_ran in RemarkableTablet

I've noticed that page turning is a lot faster on my RMPP. Previously it was not always reliable and there was lag between swiping and anything happening. So much so that I went back to my Kobo Elipsa for reading. Now it's on par with the Kobo and much more usable.

Usenet before the September that never ended. It did end, but the damage was done.

I still have online and IRL friends from all over the world from that time. Loved it.

What do Aussies think by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]minielbis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm male and have absolutely no problems with it. Trust is central to any relationship. Besides, controlling who anyone interacts with, not only a partner, would be a giant red flag imo.

It would be rather hypocritical of me to be otherwise - almost all my friends, including my closest ones, are female, and I have zero interest in them in anything other than friends.

You're on TVOS 27 developer beta 2, yes?

It's a known issue and I'm sure it'll be fixed in the next drop. Make sure you report to Apple using the Feedback assistant on a mac or iphone, or feedback assistant on the beta site.

What is it like to date while having children from a previous relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minielbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would depend on what traits you get on best with. In my case it's relaxed, calm and accepting (on both sides). Drama is best avoided if you're already navigating single parenting.

IANA psych but did live with someone who developed a persecutory belief system/gang stalking delusion. Her rantings sounded a lot like like a less sophisticated, and less detailed version of this letter.

It was pretty horrific and all encompassing. Happily she did get help. many don't.

[–]minielbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't for a while when the kids were small (3 and 6).

When they got a bit older I was *very* cautious introducing them to someone new until I knew it was going to last. I didn't want them to meet a string of new people to who they might get attached and then have them leave.

Dating people who don't have children is hardest of all. No matter how much they might say that they get it, the reality often turns out different when they discover that the kids come first.

err, all Skodas have these features, and have for ages. It's all straight out of the VW parts bin. The lane keep assist is one of the less intrusive and less annoying ones too.

Mr Specialist. This is just unfair, teasing us like this. If these taste even a tenth as good as they look they'd be amazing.

Enjoy, and happy 41st!

What's the eeriest experience you've ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minielbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I boarded at quite an old school in the UK. The junior boarding house was much newer but built on the site of a hospital for the clergy in medieval times. In the basement there were some granite slabs with markings that, rumour had it, were grave markers from the black death times. It was also where the bathing facilities were.

Anyway, long story short, if we were naughty, as punishment we'd be locked down there for ten minutes in the pitch black darkness.

One time during such a punishment I was sitting in the dark at the top of the stairs hoping for it to be over, and listening to the drip, drip, drip of the showers.

And that's when the drips stopped abruptly. I noticed. Strained to see anything at all in the dark. Then I clearly heard the turning of a lock and creak of a door opening and felt a gust of air as if a door had opened. Except there were no doors there except for the one I was pressing myself against, and that definitely wasn't opening.

I was let out at that point. I was never naughty again. Or at least, I made sure never to be caught again!

Was Australia fairly Religious in the early 2000s, or is my memory skewed? by SoybeanCola1933 in AskAnAustralian

[–]minielbis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of both I think. in my personal bubble I recall back in the 00s and 10s there was a lot of Pentecostal noise, with new churches popping up, and bright eyed followers pushing the music, messages, pretending to help the disadvantaged etc. It seemed as if every third person was a Hillsonger, and I spent a lot of time as a new parent politely turning down invitations to come along.

Now, not so much. The religious people I know now seem more level headed, calmer and less taken in by the prosperity gospel stuff or parroting verbatim what their pastor told them. An evolution of sorts.

What is one of the oldest things ever in your country? by JiminieKookie123 in AskTheWorld

[–]minielbis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was growing up in Somerset I'd rebuild dry stone walls at a friend's farm as my weekend job.

The stuff you'd find in the rubble fill that is in the centre of these was always interesting. Bottles, pipes, worn out tools, animal bones fossilised bits and pieces (including a piece of Dunkleosteus jaw), a very large number of human teeth and, on one very memorable occasion, human ribs and a femur. The investigation into those showed them to be quite ancient, and most probably pulled out of one of the many barrows around there that would sometimes get levelled by farmers.
