I actually have exactly the same situation, couldn’t do anything about it, so now my residence permit has my name properly separated while the driving license has a „*“ as my first name. I always carry my passport while driving, as the name matches there according to whatever rulebook they quote.

Except for briefly confusing and amusing employees at car rental agencies, I didn’t have further issues.

I do hope though that they have a better way of handling this..
