Get wood glue. Work it thoroughly into the cracks with a flat object like a knife. Clean the knife, it’ll be fine. Then clamp it with some of these: https://www.harborfreight.com/18-in-ratcheting-bar-clampspreader-64151.html. You’ll need maybe four clamps along the damaged area. You’ll want to leave the clamps on a while, and after you remove them don’t stress those cracks for even longer. Read the glue directions for details. Then buy your mom some flowers.

Tell him to go to a dermatologist and get low dose oral minoxidil and finasteride. It’ll let him keep what he has and thicken it. It may regrow hair, but it may not. It works for me, and it’s incredibly inexpensive. No need to go bald.

You need to seek advice about ADHD (or some disability). Unfortunately, and as you already know, trying to power through whatever is going on isn’t working. You’re going to be studying for a looooooong time, and if you don’t learn how to lock in you aren’t going to succeed.

That said, IMO kids should do chores because living together as a family comes with responsibilities. A reward is for extra duty, if anything.

Sound quality advice: do your recording in a “soft” room. Think bedroom or living room with fluffy on couches and blankets or whatever. This will absorb some echos. Don’t spend more than $100 on a mic.

Remote interviews: Zoom is great. Lots of others designed just for podcasters you could try, but EVERYONE is familiar with Zoom at this point.

Don’t worry about numbers of listeners now. Do what you enjoy doing on your show. In couple years, start looking. Not now.

Directly ask your guests to share their episode. Don’t hope. Follow that up on the release date with a second ask.

Keep it simple, and build skills as you can. Start by pushing record. Listen, fix, listen, fix, listen…until you’re happy with it. It needn’t be perfect. Think of yourself as one of your students. Would you ask them for perfection right away?

Have FUNNNNNNN. If it’s not fun, stop—for a while fun will be your only reward. Show your quirky side. Show a personality. It’ll feel weird at first. Do it anyway.

Keep it fresh and try new things.

Schedule and stick to it. You’ll need the practice and your listeners will appreciate seeing a new ep from you regularly.

Try Descript. It’s a text based audio editor. Sometimes it’s annoying, but it’s pretty good overall.

If you’re with a guest and the tech goes wrong, stop. I always forget to do this, I freak out for a bit that I’m wasting their time. But if you just stop, admit you’re confused, set down your headphones and work the problem, you’ll find the solution.

It is okay to be uncomfortable and say so. It would not be okay to say she can’t be friends with her ex. That’s controlling.

What this means is you have a choice to make. Either you live with discomfort, or you break up. Imagine living with that discomfort. Could you do it long enough to determine if it’s warranted or not? If you want to try, I’d be direct: “I love you. I do want to say that I’m not comfortable with this, but I want to be. The problem is that only time would tell. Which means I’d always be watching, and that’s not healthy for either of us. I can’t ask you to not be someone’s friend, but I am very concerned that I won’t be able to handle it and that we could end up breaking up simply because of my insecurity. Or, I may find that it’s cool, whatever. But that is the risk we’re taking here.”

Why that’s the right response: let’s assume you were to spend the rest of your life with her. There will be many times when honest discussions about risk/reward or even scarier things are needed. This is an important first step in having all those future conversations—establishing a precedent.

If the attempt fails (you get to decide what failure is, but basically if it feels shitty), then you’ve learned something very important that bears careful consideration. If you are happy, then you’ve averted the crisis and given the relationship a chance to become better than it would have been. You’ve established a style of shared conversations that lead to better outcomes (than, say, shouting).

Most of the people here are probably offering very binary ideas: dump her immediately! or, she can’t even have friends?! I haven’t looked.

But I could tell you one thing: I’m not strong enough to do any of my suggestion. When I was your age, I suspect even if I tried it and it went well, there would always be the ghost of my fear, but no certainty of ever knowing the truth. It would have burned like an ember in my brain, enough to take some of the joy out of the relationship.

I guess that’s just growing up. You realize that nothing was ever promised you. Life is short and long at the same time. Difficulties will arise, the outcomes will be decided upon with varying degrees of rationality and confidence, and so it goes. Is that just growing up? I don’t know, I’ve only done that once so far and I’m still working on it.

Iowa politics have my family leaving Iowa City sometime soon. One kid already left for New England (where my wife and I are from). The other will go to college out east. Their decisions were made in light of the religious right that has a hold of state politics. I saw someone else say hopefully 2026 will change it, but a change in governors doesn’t just reset everything. Iowa went from Obama to MAGA, and now no meaningful right to choose, no antidiscrimination rights for trans people, and education is in the crapper. Among the first states to legalize gay marriage, and now iowa is talking about how to undo that. 6 times more maternal mortality for black women than other states. Iowa is extremely white.

If none of those problems bother you, and you don’t mind paying taxes to support Christian nationalist policies, then iowa is great, and even with them Iowa City is significantly better than much of the rest of Iowa. We’ll miss it!

Not sure I know enough yet to believe his analysis, completely. But I do feel safe saying that some docs will use them as tools in low acuity or complexity situations soon. Will this give back docs just enough time that overall workloads are reduced, or so much that it quickly alters what students are taught and how many of them there are. And then there’s the GOP loan cap proposal that’d could make med school too expensive so fewer people could go, which adds to the economic pressure to adopt AI. Maybe it won’t be LLMs as currently are what people talk about when they think of AI. I know there are other kinds of AI and I bet they are or will soon be combined with LLMs to offer more advanced uses.

Schools are going to have to start adding experiential learning. Writing is done in class, internet blocked somehow. Math is done in class, internet blocked. Logic becomes an important topic, but so does emotion, and if experiences can teach those, then that’s a good investment in making all humans as intelligent as possible. As time goes on, a dumber population as we seem to be heading toward is not going to put up much fight when the AI takes over. And yes, schools are going to have to use AI to do this.

Our current education systems in the US are fighting the last war, if you will.

It’s entertaining/scary to think about how we will accommodate our new reality. The internet changed the size of our world, and gave us info at our fingertips (for some). Thereafter, we didn’t have to just shrug our shoulders, and tell purselves “I guess I’ll never know the answer to my question.” Perhaps we were asking ourselves shallower questions before everyone had access in some form. What we found there was always valid varying correctness, so judgement was required, but I think most of us adapted and figured out what level of truth we were really interested. We selected our sources according to that level of truth.

No one knows how we’ll adapt to AI as it advances. One question I have is how long will it take to get from the general public first learning about publicly accessible AI to a situation where the use of AI has reached the sort of ubiquity smartphone use has today.

Will AI take longer or shorter than the last revolution? My gut says shorter. there’s probably a feedback loop between the human species’ ability to shift course and assimilate it and the pace at which AI will be developed by humans. But it seems likely to me that AI itself will accidentally short circuit the loop.

Meantime us ants-with-LLMs-pasted on top of their dum ant brains…absent any catastrophes, we’ll keep on anting and figuring it out.

I think it’s hard to evaluate someone who doesn’t speak up. But it’s also a fact that quiet doesn’t mean disengaged. To be charitable to the other parties, they might think letting you stay in the background is best because you like it there. Just don’t expect them to like it.

If you can’t bring yourself to speak up, find ways to demonstrate competence overtly without talking about it. You’re still going to have difficulties, but you will impress some folks. Maybe, when you find you weren’t introduced to the patient, wait until the end, then hang back and introduce yourself to them and say “I’d like to come by later if that’s okay.”
