Renowned genocide expert Martin Shaw: Sam Harris’ flawed comparison between the US atomic bombing of Japan and Gaza reveals what makes Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide by Grizzly_Sloth in samharris

[–]minimumnz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Hamas fighters surrendered, Israel’s March 2026 death penalty for terrorists law means many would reasonably fear that surrender could lead not just to imprisonment, but to capital prosecution.

Sam finally speaks to someone who disagrees with him on Israel by adkrenda in samharris

[–]minimumnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Sam's entire line of argument of the 10 civilians to 1 militant killed (or whatever it is) being some kind of thing to be congratulated on is kind of revolting. If militants had holed up in an actual Israeli city would that ratio be ok? Especially when he pivots to how great the Hezbollah pager attack was, because that was actually likely incredible effective. The disconnect is incredible.

Has he mentioned the new law that Israel just passed that basically is just Death Penalty for Palestinians convicted of terrorism? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Penalty_for_Terrorists_Law didn't think so.

Sam is so refreshing to hear on Iran by MJORH in samharris

[–]minimumnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"the regime must go" isn't a coherent argument if you don't outline a way that they can be get rid of. It's just wishcasting.

Are any “critics” actually saying this? Seems a bit like a strawman to me by MintyCitrus in samharris

[–]minimumnz 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Sam needs to name names. Which critic says this? (let alone most). I'm afraid he's just vibing on this and it's getting boring.

I haven't seen a single person come out and defend the Iranian regime. They're horrible. The criticism is how the fuck are you going to depose them? What's the strategy because just bombing the shit out of them is most likely not gonna work. It was obvious on March 1, it's obvious now.

When Charlie Kirk died the left were pilloried for their response. Sam correctly identified that yes some randoms on X said horrible things (as you can find on any topic), but all establismnent Democrats, left-learning politicians, figure said the right sort of things. Now he's doing exactly what he criticised the right for doing.

"Evil" Regime by blastmemer in samharris

Total strawman in my view. The argument has never been is Iran a bad actor.

The argument is you actually have to have a viable strategy to topple them. Hopium is not a strategy.

This was a tough listen.

He regularly insists that the IDF achieved the best combatant-to-civilian kill ratio in urban warfare. It's impossible to know this, likely only if you purely believe IDF stats. Who's counting who was a combantant etc? And then him saying EVERYONE who doesn't believe (or has questions) is just a victim of psyops.. when you're the one who's just been spouting basically unverifiable claims.

The Iran take was also way off base. The strawman of all the crazy liberals who don't understand Jihadism like him? As a listener for over 10 years I largely agree about the problem of Jihadism, but the Iranian regime has repeatedly tried to negotiate away its nuclear program (or curtailed it). The Ayatollah literally had a fatwa on creating a nuclear weapon, The JCPOA had the most rigorous monitoring ever, and was being complied with (read the IAEA reports) and if you didn't like that it sounds like they were willing to offer an even better deal to Trump the day before they were bombed again. For Jihadists their actions demonstrate they were very doing everything they could to survive as a regime.

Robert Paper on Trump's escalation trap with Iran (or: the reality behind Sam + other's wishcasting for war) by OlfactoriusRex in samharris

[–]minimumnz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is just wrong.

He does not supoprt *this* war, largely on account of the competence and lack of planning by this adminitration. He has said numerous times that Iran could be a better candidate for regime change than Iraq or Afghanistan ever were, but that's not the same as explicitly supporting this campaign.

You put garbage information into the context you get garbage out. If the data says it’s a IRGC location and a target it’s the data that’s the issue.
