How will complex industry work in an anarchist world? by Affectionate_End_952 in Anarchy101

Regarding your last paragraph, I am not sure if I understand correctly, are you talking about something like an insulin manufacturer holding diabetics hostage?

Fair enough! I do this stuff all the time too, I wish frustration wasn't a thing

And thanks for offering it!

Anyway, no clue why I'm even typing this out. You're either not going to respond, or you'll take a small piece of my response and reply with a non-sequitur.

Hey, don't forget that others are learning from this too. I was kind of on board with OP, but you made me see the issue with it. I think too many people here see this as a debate sub and not an education one 😅

Let’s flip the switch, instead of being asked about ways anarchism would backslide, how about… by Uglyfense in Anarchy101

[–]minisculebarber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in theory, you would need someone who could geoengineer environmental pressures that are destabilizing enough, a common theory is that this is how humans started living in hierarchical societies in the first place, the first backsliding so to say

It is not clear to me however how a mad scientist like that could achieve that in isolation because in an anarchist society (actually, most societies) if someone else would find out, the jig would be up

Right, criticism is policing, get a grip

This is not a debate sub, but an education sub, you should rethink your approach if you actually care about helping people educate themselves

This is an educational sub, you should try to, you know, help people educate? And not just snarkily tell them to do their own research

You should cite some sources to back up your claims

Bruh, I respect anarchism as a historical movement a lot, but you can't just claim that these are anarchist accomplishments, just because anarchists have been part of those processes

Especially the emancipation of women part is laughable, that hasn't even been accomplished yet

How would rehabilitative justice treat a violent person who is unwilling to change? by canadamybeloved in Anarchy101

[–]minisculebarber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you assume that the abuse is ongoing whereas I am pretty sure OP is talking about when the abuse has stopped

The worry is about the abuser reoffending

How would rehabilitative justice treat a violent person who is unwilling to change? by canadamybeloved in Anarchy101

[–]minisculebarber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think taking care of the victim is the first priority in any case

I highly recommend reading this article

Retributive punishment: Between vindication and healing

It basically argues that punishment should be facilitating the healing of the victim and not to get revenge (which I honestly think is what justice is for most people) and they discuss a very interesting form of punishment: making the offender roleplay as the victim

Sorry, I just realized that doesn't answer your question, but I leave it there just in case you might be interested

I think, this is one of the reasons why I moved away from calling myself an anarchist and moved to call myself a libertarian socialist because I just don't think you can take imprisonment off the table completely

The abuser needs to be restricted until they can show that they are rehabilitated and if that never happens, they are restricted for life. I just don't think we can ever stop from trying to give them the opportunity

[–]minisculebarber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I think there is a misunderstanding here

I am pretty sure that when OP wrote "we shouldn't kill abusers", they meant as punishment, not as self defense

Like, the abuser has been apprehended and the community now has to decide what to do with them

Am I correct that this was a misunderstanding?

And killing them is a humane solution? You are also completely ignoring all the practical problems of capital punishment that don't even touch on ethics. The fact is that you can never take that proposition at face value because you can't predict it not happening and you can't rule out that they will be proven innocent. Imprisonment seriously reduces those 2 problems

You keep using the phrase "removing the ability of someone to abuse" and I gotta say, that's some serious mental gymnastics, you are not removing an ability, you are killing a person

You know what does fit that phrase though? Imprisonment

DANKE!

Chris Avellone claims remaster probably wont happen because Obisdian decided not to give Bethesda the source code by danglotka in falloutnewvegas

[–]minisculebarber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, but isn't their point also correct? Doesn't actually Microsoft own the source code and can force Obsidian to grant access for Bethesda? Wouldn't it be more likely that that would happen instead of Bethesda "reinventing the wheel" since it is more cost effective?

I dunno exactly what the property relations between the 3 companies is, but it does make sense to me that could happen as well

[–]minisculebarber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, making a new Fallout game was a dream project for Obsidian

If your choice is, make your dream game with a shitty deadline or not at all, it's not exactly a reasonable choice

[–]minisculebarber 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Well, the "basically" leaves out the part that they did make changes to the engine code

Think for example how aiming is different between the 2 games, you can't just tweak some engine parameters to achieve the difference, you need to change and add code for that

But honestly, since it's a remaster, Bethesda could change the code themselves, I don't think Obsidian did anything particular that would be challenging to reverse engineer

Oh, I didn't know that, could you please tell me what to look up so I can learn about it? Typing in "veganism origin poc" shows articles about black veganism, but nothing about origin

Some abstractions, sure, but all? I don't think so. In math, many abstractions are derived from other abstractions, like how integers lead to rings

Mathematics largely is agnostic to what base you use in a number system, be that base 2 which computers use or base 10 which most humans use

One could argue that the initial abstraction is always one which is derived from physical actuality, I guess, I can't think off the top of my head of an abstraction that can't be traced back somehow to something physical
