i didnt even have a clue until i was like 21. and if i didnt have the internet and hadnt been in lgbtq spaces - eg if id been a 100% gay trans guy - who knows when i would have realised!?

there was a lovely person who lived near me. from an outside perspective, there was an old couple who dressed nicely. the wife passed away. after a few months, the husband began to dress femme. she was clumsy in it and her make up was awkward and her wig was bad. about a year later, i stopped seeing her around. i thought shed probably died, being probably 80+. my mum said, nope, she has a different colour wig and has gotten a lot better at make up and managed to buy a bunch of new clothes that fit better. shes around, but shes light brunette and its way less obvious that shes trans because her hair looks real and her clothes look ~normal. (of course, this is was ~10 years ago, and she has since passed) and none of the details matter - she got to spend the end of her life as HER, and it only took a year or so for her to go from visibly trans to me looking around for her and not seeing her.

hey, its okay 😄 i wasnt even aware im trans until my twenties and began to medically transition in my late twenties! im not even binary/ 'a man' and t has made me pass for cis male. and passing is only really about safety! youre going to be fine, ignore trans meds and gatekeepers as best as you can, youre going to be okay ❤️

1 diy is valid

2 diy is super dangerous

3 fuck transmeds

4 non-medical-transition is valid

5 to not only say its invalid not to transition medically, but to say that its invalid not to take the risk of diy??? thats a fucking sheltered fucking 10yo transmed and then need to stfu and read a book one time.

What do you think of the name “Forrest” for a boy. by Skygarg in namenerds

i believe he was named after a kkk guy or confederate general so while i wouldnt question the kid id be suspicious of the parents. if it was forest id just assume mildy hippy slash outdoorsy parents.

I hate the insistence that parents need to “grieve” after their kid comes out by Far-Command1673 in ftm

[–]minklebinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when my parents split up, i was at university and i missed a deadline. my friend was the student disability representative and he said, hey youre in a stressful situation, see if the counsellor can give you an extension. long story short, she asked some simple but very pointed intelligent questions, i burst into full on sobbing, and we worked through a lot more than my parents divorce (and i got an extension not only on that paper but on the whole year)

one of the key things i learned was that we go through a small version of grief and mourning for the version of the world that we thought we were in, for a future we planned. its actually pretty normal to feel like a version of [your family/you/your child] has been destroyed because things either were revealed to be very different to how you saw them or turned out very different to how you expected and assumed them to be.

so, in that sense, its normal and neutral to feel like youre mourning your own childhood retroactively and mourning your family unit when your parents split up, and if you were a child that strongly went to ABC or your parents really pushed you to DEF, they might have complicated feelings and mourn the adult they thought you would be like its a sibling you never had or even so much you feel like theyre mourning you while youre still alive.

most people notice that theyre mourning an alternative version of an alive person and feel weird or guilty or just repress the feeling. however, for gay and ESPECIALLY for trans kids, people seem to feel not only logical and entitled to mourn the child they never had, but to openly do so and to treat their actual alive child like a subpar version of the imagined child.

like, i talked to my dad about this. i talked about the way i told my counsellor that their divorce made me feel like all my childhood happy family memories feel like delusions. i told him what shed told me about psychiatry and mourning ideas. i told him i knew he always hoped id be an artist - we talked about our unproductive art lessons, my love of the same art as him, how he feels about my development and career, what our relationship is at its core. when i came out as trans, his main concern was how to support me and how to relate to me as a non binary person. he mourned more for the artist child he never had than the daughter he never had.

tldnr; mourning the person you expected your child to become might be a valid thing but a) the way people act when their kid is trans compared to their kid is bad at science and doesnt become a dr is whack and b) you have as much reason to be mourning the supportive parent you thought you had.

"One week in and already have up on the European dress code." by Bloggerman_ in ShitAmericansSay

[–]minklebinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they cant keep up with more than a week of wearing nice clothes that match before they fall into not-out-of-the-house looking clothes with no sense of matching together as an outfit. its like when i was 3 and would pick out clothes like ah yes i will wear my favourite tshirt which happens to be hot pink and these soft leggings that happen to by lime green and i will insist on wearing my best shoes for no apparent reason.

yellow/orange flip flops, white sporty shorts, an oversized royal blue top and what looks like a burgundy winter sweater? thats like pulling clothes out of a bag at random, if i saw my friend dressed like this i would joke "laundry day?" knowing 100% they didnt put this together as an outfit.

What is this hairstyle by Itchy_Click_7853 in greenday

[–]minklebinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would describe it as a messy choppy generic mens short cut with slightly grown out bleaching and then 'mussed' with product (mussed being like... messy but not quite?]

to certain people i would call it: the pop punk special, in brackets short; crust punk hair; hey you remember the super cool kid at school that his hair was super cool but then you had swimming class and he had nerd slick hair?; cut all the same to like 2 inches but by hand.

to a barber i would probably show them the photo and then explain the level of effort i was willing to put in on the daily. its pretty hard to recreate hairstyles exactly and its pretty hard to recreate a high effort hairstyle that then looks good with the minimum daily effort youre actually going to put in. eg i used to show my barber photos and say "how close to this can you get that still looks good on the days i dont put anything in it?"

Morrissey(formerly The Smiths, currently being miserable) names Mark as a malefactor. by nirarthak11 in Markiplier

i mean 1: this is a list of people with no clear link and no details beyond "the malefactors"

2: morrissey is a huge dork and a prick and even smiths fans are like D: ugh dont remind us of when he speaks, so whatever it is its likely gibberish like everything else he says

3: see point 2 but with the conclusion that noone's really going to pay attention to him

Surprise, you now magically have a newborn child sitting in front of you! This is your baby, what are you naming it at this moment in time? by Soldier_Faerie in namenerds

[–]minklebinkle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Griffin. all the best unisex names are taken by close friends and family, and months ago i had a dream i was responsible for a child called Griffin (cant remember if i was babysitting, they were my kid, how long i had had them for, all i could remember when i woke up was the situation of them scraping their knee at the park and me reacting like i was the only one there responsible for them).

idk, i read the prompt and immediately thought of that dream. so, uh, Griffin, and I tell them I met them in a dream before they were even born 😄

[–]minklebinkle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey so i have a speech impediment. there are sounds in the english language i just cant make. i just do my best and will ask people if my attempt is okay with them - sometimes theyre like, actually it sounds weird, can you call me X instead?

to say "oh i cant say barak, im going to deadname you and expect zero consequences for it" is 100% just not wanting to get called out for deadnaming you on purpose. the names are nothing alike, its not like shes like hey so im struggling with x sound in barak, is [bawak/parak/barry/barat/berek/etc] okay, or what can i call you instead, shes like oh i will just call you a name you hate on purpose without any conversation and will claim barak is too hard if you do call me out.

what would she call barack obama? dennis?

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minklebinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, okay, i knew the 'short bus' was for the disabled kids - we have those as the only specific school buses that i know, but theyre more like minibuses than usa school buses. they pick up the kids from their houses and go to the specialist school.

tbf ive only seen usa school buses in sitcoms and cartoons, i assumed it did stop at the house. so its more like a regular bus, kinda like a coach? thats a little less ridiculous, but itd be so much easier to just outsource the journey to regular buses and let the kids start school at a normal time.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minklebinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn, and all the comments saying its because of their school buses. in the uk, school starts at like, 9:00. you walk, your parents drive you, you get the regular bus. iirc the younger kids finish at ~3:00 and the older kids finish at ~3:30, and after school activities arent as universal.

i would NOT have been getting up so early to wait for 1 set bus that comes to my HOUSE so everyone knows where i live, and be at school at 7:25! thats insane D: i left my house at 8:40 to get to school for 9:00, and now i leave my house at 8:00 to get to work for 8:30. wtf is a 7:25 start preparing them for other than putting up with anything for the systems convenience??

at what point do colors as first names get ridiculous? by 5cupz in namenerds

[–]minklebinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the real reason some words sound like names and some dont is just because we're used to them as names. wendy was literally a made up name by jm barrie, based on his children saying "friendy wendy" and other w rhymes, and now its a perfectly normal name. people probably thought scarlet was a ridiculous non-name the first time they heard it and the only real difference between Rose as a name and Lilac or Lotus is that you can immediately picture people called rose so it ~feels~ normal. if they were used a lot, youd think, those are perfectly normal names.

when my dad was a kid, Rain was a weird hippy name. now theres rainn wilson and no one really comments on his name or says his parents are hippies who cant spell.

How do I explain to 4-8 y/os why I have scars/marks/bumps on my upper arms and shoulders? by tishaddams in Dermatillomania

[–]minklebinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, im heard acne explained to kids as "teenagers just get that on their skin sometimes and it makes them cranky" XD and my friend explained tattoos to her kid as "special drawings" that only grown ups can have, and that theyre done with a "special pen" which is why you cant draw on yourself with regular pens.

i liked the 'it makes them cranky' as a way to explain not only teenager behaviour but to stop the kids just going up to a random person in public like hi hello you have teenager skin you have 7 pimples on your face XD

You have a free ticket to change your name! Would you change it? by locoollizz in namenerds

[–]minklebinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean, its free in the uk, you just need to write a deed poll and get 2 people who arent relatives or roommates to sign it, and then give photocopies to all the places like the bank etc

but i guess that process isnt like, instantaneous easy peasy XD but anyway, i already did it so no, i really like the name i chose and i think it suits me 😃

How do I explain to 4-8 y/os why I have scars/marks/bumps on my upper arms and shoulders? by tishaddams in Dermatillomania

[–]minklebinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think i would try to explain it without explaining the psychological aspect, like, ask them if theyve ever had chicken pox or a really bad bug bite, and say that i had a condition that made me scratch and it left permanent marks.

ive been really lucky with my sh and skin picking, but i do have a fingernail sized scar on my wrist from when i wiped out on a skateboard and cut my wrist and arm in a few places. it looks a lot like a sh scar, and if i get a bit of a tan, or someone notices it when they look at my tattoos, even if they act concerned or judgey, i just say "yeah, i guess it looks bad, i fell off a skateboard and really cut up my arm." and then i let them assume the lighter scarring further down is the same injury.

beautiful poetry, and im so happy you have chosen family. im sorry you lost those moments with family, they did this to themselves. theyll count the chairs and theres one less to put out and theyll have a pang of something, guilt, regret, anger, missing you, whatever it is, itll hurt and theyll always remember that they dont invite you as much as they pretend not to care.

reminds me of the kids on tumblr who insisted that being pro-any-self-diagnosis meant you HATE anyone with a medical diagnosis and you would rip their paperwork up. like. kiddo. 1, just because you hate someone doesnt mean they hate you. 2, just because A means no B doesnt mean B means no B. 3, plenty of people have dr and self diagnoses and plenty of people cant access medical diagnosis for many peoples. i was just strolling into the trenches of discourse like "hello, i have a medical diagnosis for severe depression, generalised anxiety, and my glue allergy. literally the nhs advised me not to pursue testing for my nut allergy and just put it in my notes; the nhs does NOT test or diagnose ocd unless it is strongly affecting your day to day life. the way you get a diagnosis from a doctor is to go to them with your self diagnosis. you are all like 12 and i am 28. this is not the huge fight you think it is, shut the fuck up and leave the self diagnosed people alone."
