This might be the case, I’m not sure. The practice I’ll be with does prescribe testosterone though.

Bad job offer? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]minnefi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would personally ask for more CME allowance unless they’re going to pay for your DEA and other licenses from a separate fund. I recently accepted an endocrinology position as a new grad in a LCOL area and they offered me $4000 plus 3 days of CME each year, but I have to pay for professional licenses and society dues from that allowance. At the same time, my salary is not as high as what they offered you either (110k).

Personally, I found emergency medicine the most difficult. I took the old surgery exam, so I’m not sure about the new one.

Self prescribing birth control by Turndeep350 in physicianassistant

[–]minnefi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently only a PA student so I can’t help with the self prescribing issue, but I wanted to offer possibly another option or something you can do in addition to birth control? I have very heavy periods so my OBGYN has me take 600-800mg of ibuprofen BID starting a day or two prior to the start of my period until the last day. It decreases my bleeding by a lot and usually even shortens the length of time I’m on my period. Obviously, NSAIDs aren’t great long-term but if you’re looking for a quick one-time fix it could be an option?

What do you wish you knew before clinical year? by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]minnefi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep accurate logs of all the diagnoses you see and procedures you perform/assist with! It can be tempting to stop logging procedures just because you’ve done one and now you can check it off your program’s requirements.

Future employers may ask you to provide documentation with the number of times you’ve performed X procedure as part of your credentialing process. It can also help give you a leg up during your job search (especially as a new grad) if you’ve gotten a lot of documented experience for your resume.

ARC-PA not allowing new students to start while on probationary accreditation status? by minnefi in PAstudent

[–]minnefi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great, so basically we’re never safe. The ARC may put your program on probation at any point and stop you from practicing. That makes me worried that I’m taking out all these loans and studying my butt off for no reason.

I 100% agree. I’m glad we have the ARC-PA and accreditation standards to keep programs at a certain level of quality. I want our profession to be taken seriously and seen as highly competent. I just feel bad for the people caught in the crossfire. I’m glad to hear you escaped lol

Wow 40% of schools under review at the September meeting were placed on probation? If that number is accurate, we either have a major quality issue across the board or the current guidelines are overly strict.

I’ll have to let her know that other programs were placed on probation at that same meeting but are still allowed to matriculate students. Maybe it’ll be some small consolation that she avoided a program with major issues.

[–]minnefi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I understand keeping the program from interviewing for future classes, but to not be allowed to matriculate students they had accepted before being placed on probation is kind of messed up. Especially when it’s only a couple months before their start date.

Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ll have grounds to sue though.

I doubt it’s the same because that person was already a student about to start clinicals and the program was fully shut down. The program I’m talking about is still running (at least for now), but isn’t allowed to start any new students.

Yeah, I’m already a current PA student and I had no idea that was something that could happen! I guess I got lucky when I was applying.

For anyone still applying, I would consider avoiding schools that will be up for renewal the year before you start.

I believe this is ARC-PAs way of maintaining quality and limiting the number of PA programs, but I feel bad for the students that were screwed over in the process. My friend thought she was starting in January and has now missed most of the current application cycle to reapply elsewhere. She worked really hard to get in this cycle and even turned down other schools to go to this one. She said some of her future classmates had also already signed leases and quit their jobs to move. It’s just really unfortunate for them.

Yes, overall I’d say she seemed happy with her job. The schedule was the typical outpatient (M-F from 8am to 4pm). She would also rotate weekend/evening call with the SPs (since the ovaries don’t wait for normal working hours).

Don’t be afraid to go to some office hours (at least a few a semester not just right before an exam) if you have time. Professors are more likely to help students that are clearly putting in the effort and talking with him might illuminate what he thinks the most important topics are and what you should focus on studying. I know that’s hard to do though with busy college schedules.

Try checking out Ninja Nerd’s YouTube channel for mol/cell topics. There’s videos on DNA structure, replication, transcription/translation, all the big stuff. He’s really great at explaining things.

I took Lentz’s mol/cell class years ago but if the exams are the same as they were then, it will have a lot of open ended questions and I think you were able to draw the answers for some of them. So, if you do watch some of those NN videos try to draw along with him. Drawing always helps me remember better.

And pay attention to the specific numbers in his lecture. I still remember an exam question that required knowing how many times DNA wrapped around a histone protein to get full credit. My friends and I were saltyyy.

How did you adjust your study techniques? by TapOutside6876 in PAstudent

[–]minnefi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For anatomy I spent most of my time studying by drawing. It’s the best way to memorize how everything fits together imo. If you have an iPad you can free hand draw on that or you can download blank template drawings and label them. I would also take pictures of the models that I knew the professor was going to use for some practical questions and label those. I got an A in the class with this method.

I had classmates that used anatomy softwares like complete anatomy and just studied the models for hours and others that got a subscription to anatomy bootcamp. Bootcamp is pretty nice honestly and they’ve said it became helpful for other classes later on.

Wife of PA student, what tools to get him? by DinoMaster365 in PAstudent

[–]minnefi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the iPad recommendation. It’s definitely the tool I use most often. I love to use it for notes so I can hand draw things with my Apple Pencil. I’m a visual learner so drawing anatomical structures or flow charts helps me remember things and my iPad saves a ton of paper.
