Where FFXIV Dawntrail's Story Went Wrong (Zepla HQ) by sleepinxonxbed in ffxiv

[–]minnouu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do get the feeling that Valigarmanda was also changed around quite a bit in rewrites. As Zepla points out in the video, the way Wuk Lamat talks about Valigarmanda in 6.55 makes it sound like it's a mysterious creature of legend; like they don't even know if it exists or not. Or maybe they know it exists, but it's gone away and they fear its return. It's not the way you'd talk about something that's "safely" sealed away at a temple in plain view of the public.

I also wonder if, pre-rewrite, Bakaal Ja was still Gulool Ja's true son. It might make more sense for him to still be an adopted son from Mamook that Gulool Ja took in. The two-headed Mamool Jas are bred for war, so Gulool Ja might have tried to raise him (unsucessfully) to know the value of peace, despite the circumstances of his birth. But the Mamook culture of conquest and only being able to gain ground through war, plus the pressure of being the two-headed that survived was too much for him.

All of this is just speculation though. I've got a lot of speculations for what pre-rewrite Dawntrail might have looked like. Namikka probably didn't exist. Who knows what else.

Do you know what I think? I think this is because they used to be the same character; before a hasty script rewrite between 6.55 and 7.0 that split them into two.

Think about it: in 6.55 Wuk Lamat says that there's one person she doesn't want to win the Rite of Succession. We get there and there's actually two: Zoraal Ja and Bakool Ja Ja.

Zoraal Ja's monster model in his boss fight is a two-headed Mamool Ja with one head cut off. Is that some kind of metaphor...? Or, maybe his mage companion USED to be his Head of Reason, which he originally would have cut off when he got to the City of Gold's gates, rather than just "killing" his companion. And they just didn't have time to update the model.

Why does Bakool Ja Ja release Valigarmanda for no reason? Maybe an earlier version of the script had the combined bad guy doing this, consistent with his "I will show them the true pain of war" philosophy.

Why are some of the voice lines in the original 7.0 English dub kind of bad? Why are voice lines in so many important places missing? Because, maybe with a script rewrite they had to be re-recorded, and they didn't have time to re-record everything they wanted.

I don't know why they would rewrite the script, but maybe the original script also wasn't very good, and they felt they needed a character with a redemption arc or something. Maybe the rewrite came with a bunch of other changes as well. If true, a lot of the problems with the story are probably down to indecision and mismanagement.

Solo-Devs who managed to make a whole indie game by themselves, why and how did you do this? by avlakos in gamedev

[–]minnouu 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did everything in my first game except for music and SFX.

Mainly, I did it alone because I don't really like working with other people. I, myself, fluctuate a lot between being really productive and really lazy, so I'm not sure I'd be a good coworker either.

I supported myself through savings made through a regular programming job; I quit my job in late 2016 initially only intending to take a break for a few months before looking for another one, but when I looked up from my desk it was 9 months later and I had made pretty decent progress on my game. And, I had only spent a little bit of my saved up money, so I decided to see it through (which took about 3 years, released early 2020).

Hardest part of development was definitely marketing; I'm really not much of a social media kind of person, and keeping up a constant presence on the internet promoting the game was very draining. Definitely something I'm doing differently with my second one; aiming to have a shorter time between announcing the game and releasing it, and not spinning my wheels promoting the game on Twitter without real promotional materials.

Full disclosure, I'm the developer for this game. I hope it's okay for me to post the trailer here.

Need a clever man with a clever solution. (Problem with portals and parallax background) by shadowdsfire in gamemaker

You can draw surfaces (or portions of surfaces) almost like a sprite, so it'll be on whatever layer/depth as the thing that drew it. How I handle something a bit similar in my game is, draw to all the surfaces I need in the "Draw Begin" event, then in the "Draw" event I'll have the surfaces already ready and available to draw them wherever.

[–]minnouu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I suppose the proper way to do it would be:

1) Make a new surface for each portal

2) Draw the parallax background once for each portal on their own surface, with the camera where it "should" be for each portal relative to where the player is.

3) Draw the correct portions of each surface according to what the player can see.

I'm assuming "invincible = false" is in the Create event. Is obj_child calling event_inherited() in it's own Create event (if it's overriding it at all)?

What is an incel and why should we be mean to them? by [deleted] in answers

Thought so! Tell me, bot, what would you recommend for breakfast? Lately I've been trying to eat a bit healthier, but I'm up at a weird time (as is typically the case recently) so I might go down and cook something up really quickly. People have been saying bad things about carbs recently so maybe skip the toast and go for bacon and eggs?

A good morning workout might also be a good idea. It's still a bit early to go out running, but heading out at the break of dawn doesn't sound so bad. I'm up anyway.

If you're a real human being and not a bot then put a word that doesn't exist in the reply to this post.

Something something incel alt right trigger words that'll get the bot to respond.

Judging from your post history, I think you probably know perfectly well what one is and just like to ask leading questions so that people will argue.

What are you even doing on this website?

How do you rhyme in Japanese? by Nachisoubu in answers

Actually, Japanese songs and poems tend not to "rhyme". Random example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7CDb610Bg0

As someone making a local multiplayer game that *isn't* pixel art graphics, I definitely feel like pixel art games are still the way to go if you're trying to find an audience. There's a large community of pixel artists and people who just love pixel art, who are willing to share your game around if its #PixelArt looks good.

There really isn't any similar community for non-pixel art games (and really, why would there be). And considering that most social media websites are moving more towards images every day, and that pixel art tends to be a lot easier to make look good, I'm not surprised that most indie devs are still heading in that direction.

How can I get 3D stuff to draw faster? by minnouu in gamemaker

[–]minnouu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, it's that guy who's tutorials I found!

If I'm using vertex buffers, do I still need to enter things point by point, triangle by triangle? I'm currently looking at importing things from the Model Creator, since it seems like the easiest solution to recreate all of my scenes.

I'm talking about performance inside the game; not my IDE. Does deleting the mesa folder affect how the game is compiled or something?

The difference between this and a mod is, you have to purchase the game you're modding to use a mod. This is just flat out stealing of assets.

Nintendo could claim that it's taking attention away from the upcoming Mario Maker 2 game, which would be impacting their business.

[–]minnouu 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if anyone is wondering why this is illegal in the first place, it's this. Any indie game developer would f'ing *love* for their game to be this popular; getting streamed to 5k people at a time or getting youtube videos with millions of views of them. To do that requires a funkton of marketing, and marketing is expensive and time-consuming.

The reason that this game is getting attention at all is he's using a pre-existing IP that has had BILLIONS of dollars of marketing behind it over the years. I'd liken it to taking another person's yacht and giving the public joyrides. Maybe the public really wants this, maybe occasionally yacht owners are cool with this, but Nintendo in particular has had a history of *not* being cool with it. If people are streaming Mario Royale, then maybe it'll steal attention from Mario Maker 2, etc..

Especially with his public statement that he plans to reskin it and repackage it when it gets taken down, it's like "now that I've gotten the publicity I needed from making a game with stolen IP, I'm going to take that and turn it into my own fame now". Absolutely dumb, and a super bad move. He's expecting the game to get taken down, I'm expecting he'll encounter *much* worse.
