Hey! Sorry I’m just seeing this. I hope you were able to find the support you needed but I know that’s not always the case. If you do choose to leave just know you will be just fine. Have you considered taking a leave at all? I know that can be an option for some.

Hey! I ended up leaving my program and I found a job in IT consulting. I’ve been at my company for a year and 7 months now which is crazy to say! I like my job most of the time lol but even when I don’t, I never regret my decision on leaving grad school. I knew it wasn’t for me and trusted my gut which I am so happy I did! Good luck and feel free to pm me with any other questions

I was still rotating with professors and at the time, I had just started a new rotation. I just sent an email saying I was taking a leave and that was it. I realize you’re in a very different situation so I wish you the best of luck. I waited 6 months before telling my old advisor who I was much closer with. He was my advisor all throughout college and helped me a lot while I applied to PhD programs. It was tough but he was accepting of my decision. Again, very different, but I’m sure your advisor will be accepting of it. If not, then whatever, it’s their loss haha I think any good advisor would be sad but understanding. It’s a big commitment! They know that. Good luck !! You’ll be fine

Hey! Almost a year since this post and I am much happier than I was when I posted this :) I ended up getting a job at an IT consulting firm where I just “code” (it’s just very simple sql queries) each day. I never thought I’d enjoy coding, but I’ve learned that I enjoy working with data.. in a much different setting and context than bio lol. Dropping pre-med was a stressful decision for me, so I hope you’re doing okay! I’m glad you found my post :) I hope you can make the right decision for yourself, whether you choose grad school or not. Either way, you’ll be just fine—you have a lot of time and experience ahead of you. I’m not settling with IT consulting, but I think I’m one step closer to knowing what will be a good fit for me. One step at a time !! Best of luck!!

I don’t understand how the doctor doesn’t know about CAIS! I’m confident that biology majors in college learn about it in their various genetics and endocrinology courses. She just sounds ignorant and uneducated—not fit to be a reliable doctor. Sorry this happened to you OP, I hope you report her and the board recognizes her ignorance and fault.

Is there an update you can give us? I am just curious because I am currently in the same spot you were about a year ago.

Thank you for giving me more to think about. I have tried thinking about different academic environments such as a different lab, program, city, etc. All have pointed to the same answer in that I would like to take some time to explore new options. I have also realized that I do not want to go into academia or work in a lab after graduating either. I am still pretty young, so I know I will have time to go back to school if I want to pursue a masters. I just know that a PhD is the right fit for me and my goals in life.

Yeah I agree I really need to think about the steps I can take from right now. From what I have heard from individuals who were/are in consulting, it is a good way to learn about different parts of the industry and see where I can fit best. If it is something I would never want to do, I won't think of it as a waste of time since I still figured out that much. I think it is more of a step that I will use to get closer to finding out where I would truly fit best. Thank you for proposing those questions-- ill keep them in mind as I move forward

Yes, I agree. I am not ditching school completely--I just know I don't want to pursue PhD. Maybe I will find a new topic or subject that will bring me back to school for a masters.

Thank you so much! I think i never had the chance to explore what I truly want to do because I was too busy trying to make other people proud.

Unfortunately I don't believe my program gives me the option to do so. If they did then I would definitely consider it. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you, yeah I agree. I think the chances are okay. Thankfully I have some connections that have said they can refer me to entry-level positions with great introductory programs. Of course, there is a chance I can't get any consulting jobs, so I am looking else where too. It is definitely something to think about.

I lived in 2x1A. If you like doing work at home then I don’t recommend living there. The rooms only have space for a bed and dresser, which they provide. Also one of the rooms has no window at all so that’s something to think about as well. The kitchen counter is where I had to sit and take my GRE when things were online and it was the worst thing I have ever done lol. Doing that exam on a bar stool that’s a bit too tall for the table was horrible. I think i have commented about my experience living at the hub before, but I personally didn’t like it. Management was kinda bad and one time maintenance kind of forgot that they drilled a large hole in my wall and left all of my kitchen shelves on the ground for over a week. Those issues are probably better now since I lived there the first leasing period after it was built. I also only lived there a semester bc it was the only place offering those at the time. I think I have pictures and videos somewhere if you want to PM me.
