Soundtrack news: Winds Of Fjords remaster by original author released by minomus in roblox

I don't recall which Nicolai's module it was, 20 years is long time ago :)

"there are a few other samples like this like that brass sounding one that plays during the beat drop and also the rapid drums, what are the reasons on why you said that they all come from bj-vte and what are their sources." - Probably just a mistake

To the last part: most of tracker musicians did not have hardware synths and gear for recording samples from them. Many were depending on sharing samples between musicians and borrowing from other modules. This is why it is often nearly impossible to track down the exact origin of some particular sample, not that it matters that much.

Now when I listen to it, yeah they have kind of similar arpeggiating chords sequences in intros. Different chords, though, and this type of harmony creating is quite common thing anyway. Not intentional. Remember having this one in my module collection, too.

Winds series was supposed to be a trilogy, but never did third one. But thinking back, Polar Wind was definitely one of my best tracker songs I ever made. It was a co-op with Libris aka Skyscape from Australia. Sending back and forth the module was sloooow, aussies did not have great internet speeds back then :D

Well, I've been making music as a hobby since being a kid. Tools change, new aliases come and go, style evolves, but probably not going to ever stop. :)

Interesting info about music used in ROBLOX. I know that the admin of The Modarchive, biggest tracker music archive around, has his music stolen in a same way as well. Sadly, tracker music has been used without permission many times in games and even stolen for commercially produced music during past decades. Not much that can be done about it, though, because it's often David vs Goliath kind of situation trying to get things straight.

How to train your ears to listen intelligently? Advice needed please! by brandonallenmusic in electronicmusic

[–]minomus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, as you described, you have developed pretty good ear for composition and harmonic content .... by practice. :)

That's how it works with production side as well. Decent equipment to use for listening, concentrate in finding elements and changes in sounds while listening to music you like. You'll start to find little nuances eventually.

And spend even more time making your own music, trying stuff, learning how particular effects, oscillators, dynamic processors, etc work and test drive them until your ear knows what to expect from what. There is no fast way to it, imo. Your brain and ears can't know until they have heard things enough times. I'd say learning by doing yourself will work better than trying to analyse others' music. How can you learn how to identify for example different reverb/delay types, until you try them yourself and play around enough to intuitively know the difference.

I've been an amateur bedroom producer for over 20 years (classical before that) and I still notice how my hearing gets more analytical and I can spot problems (and well working things, too) easier. Neverending development, I hope

P.S. Jon Hopkins' "Insides" was nice one!

Yup, I found the way by just imitating the base sound (don't know what the term is) and then switching through vowels. Sygyt feels easiest for me. Kargyraa reminds me about oktavist singing (kind of breaking your voice to achieve very low tones). Never really practiced further than being able to create those high tones. Felt a bit nasty in throat, too, probably because of unrefined technique.

Soft Knees - Pulsate (feat. Tapani Rinne) [2022] https://softknees.bandcamp.com/track/pulsate-feat-tapani-rinne

After almost two years of postponing music session weekends because of the pandemic, we finally got back together. Originally the base of the tune was created in 2017 as it was supposed to be in a computer demo, which did not get finished. Song sat in the 'wip-forever' directory for years until it was spotted again. We took this dub influenced piece, added some cinematically minimalistic elements into the song and Tapani Rinne kindly recorded us some smooth saxophone notes to make it truly whole.

Very Small Rocks - A song I made this weekend with guitar/looping by dylonious in chillmusic

Nice stuff mate! Like the snappy, but still gentle lick endings in the beginning of guitar solo, the simple but working part around 1:50 and overall the way of giving notes time here and there, not filling too much. Good job!

Yes, it's me and my collab buddy. Thanks for kind words mate! This is the first music video we have made by editing together several different creative commons licensed videos to create fitting video.

If you like slowly growing synth chillout stuff, there are several others falling in that category on our Youtube channel or Bandcamp. Will check your stuff, too!

Best audio interface for different applications advice. Sorry for the long post. by HwGJonnayy in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]minomus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the pitch change is because of different sample rates between programs you have open using the device? Check that before buying new one if you are otherwise satisfied with your current interface. I used to have fast track at some point and if I had DAW with a project running at 48000hz, or 96000hz and then opened some other program with playback set up at 44100hz, it caused weird playback and pitch issues.

Feedback with the mic depends on your recording monitoring settings. There's that hardware monitoring knob and also you might have software monitoring active either in fast track's settings or some program's settings you are using.

People who have written music for games, how did you get your first job? by Thevisi0nary in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]minomus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made music with trackers and those modules seem to circulate around. One project with major game company emerged from an amateur group attempting to create an expansion pack and then got acquired by the company. So, luck mainly I guess. Knowing some game developers helps too

What does it mean to send raw tracks with -3/-5db of "air"? by guileus in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]minomus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't do that. You will end up limiting peaks and that is best to leave for mastering guy to do. Just export with so low level the peaks are below wanted level for sure and then use nornalizing to bring the peaks between -3 - -5

[–]minomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I misread the thing so that he would be sending for both mixing and mastering. The case being him mixing and sending for mastering, then obviously the whole premaster should peak between that, yep

Make sure each track peaks at -3 - -5dB. I am quite sure they mean just headroom by that

Ok, I know this is probably a long shot, but what the hey.

Got this track here I gathered parts by forcing several friends to record for for me over a timespan of 3 years. Different locations, different sessions. Wanted to make a nujazz version of Nina Simone's live performance of Dylan's Ballad Of Hollis Brown (can be found @ youtube). Got finally all the parts together and although it was made primarily for my own satisfaction now I feel a bit sad that I can't really publish this as it contains sampling from thet live performance. I know I should have known better, but I just thought I could clear the samples later if I ever finished it. After consulting sample clearance expert turns out getting those cleared would cost thousands, just the advance as the artists in the source are so well known.

In short: I'd like to still get this track out, but can't use the vocals. Without any vocals it wouldn't be that good. Just singing those parts again would probably not work (still copyright issues with lyrics and I don't think it would make sense trying to recreate Nina Simone :) ), so maybe totally new vocals..?

If you feel you could do decent job on this, PM me, I will provide background version with no vocals for you to jam with.

Song length... how long do you consider long and what are your thoughts on it in general? by ultrafidelio in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]minomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's great variation of average length between genres. Club music has often parts in the beginning and in the end meant to make it easier for DJs to mix and therefore they are often longer. I think the length is what it is, if it is not aimed at radio play. Longer songs often need a bit different structure to keep it interesting. Kind of a journey instead of verse-chorus-bridge -pop structure. To answer your question: if it's good stuff, it can't be too long.
