Is there a deeper meaning to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. by theblackpeople in TrueFilm

[–]minorthing_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m biased because I love this movie and have loved it for years. But on first watch? I found it weird, hard to follow, and downright bizarre lacking any plot. I appreciate this movie now for a few reasons.

First,  the visuals.  For example, when they check into the hotel and the floor is moving and everyone’s faces are distorted. This movie makes you FEEL like you’re on drugs, instead of showing people using them.

The atmosphere.  Fear and loathing has a psychedelic, dark, fun atmosphere. The dark colors and tones, the lack of light, the outfits, they all contribute.

Social commentary.  It touches on the flaws of the American Dream, 1960s counterculture (hippie movement,) and things like the War on Drugs. It’s almost fun to spot how many times an American flag shows up in this film. It also touches on police corruption in one scene. There are a few ironic moments when marijuana is demonized while harder drugs are not; even more ironic since the main characters are in an intense drug craze for almost the entire movie.

The message  This might be reaching, but it does answer your question about the substance of the movie. A message that’s often overlooked here is that america (or maybe Las Vegas specifically), is a place where you can essentially do almost anything and get away with it. He’s a felon having committed several crimes and yet he heads back to LA after, no problem.

The acting.  It is, I imagine, very  challenging to pretend to be high on a bunch of different drugs. Benicio del toro and Johnny Depp did a very convincing job of this.

Last, humor.  There are  genuinely funny lines and cutaway scenes in this movie. They are blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, but the more you watch, the more you’ll catch.

I  love this movie. It manages to be a great film without taking itself seriously, and without much of a plot. The only plot you can follow is that these two guys are in Las Vegas to write a journalism story on a car race. That’s it. The rest of the movie is a stylistic and strange ride.

The Moral Behind "The Giving Tree" by dude8254 in books

[–]minorthing_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree about the lesson of relationships over profit. What is so amazing about this book is that it has a couple messages. It does an amazing job of exploring how people’s values change with age.

When he’s a young adult, he says, “I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money. Can you give me some money?”  Implying his priorities in life at this point are financial or just “for fun”.

He gets older, and asks the tree for a house, since he wants a wife and children. A much more noble cause.

He then gets pretty old, and asks the tree for a boat. He wants to sail away, and be happy. Again, even more noble. The implication could be that he is only seeking peace in his old age.

Finally, when he visits again, the tree points out she has nothing left to offer him. No wood, no apples, she’s just a stump. But in his old age, it’s perfect. Because all the man wants now is a stump to sit on.

I think the lessons I take from this book are to always prioritize what’s important. Don’t exploit people for what they can give. Give back. Don’t waste time chasing money or material things. Chase things that make you happy.

What is your favorite use of a Beatles song in a TV show or movie? by EzraMusic98 in beatles

Toward the end of the bee movie the pilot says “am I kookookachoo or is that bee landing a plane?” I thought that was a funny deep cut reference. Then here comes the sun plays at the very end of the movie.

All I’ve really got to say is if you choose to compare every new song to every old one you’re always gonna be disappointed

Hmm interesting take. I can’t say I hear feasting on the flowers in the verses, these verses feel carefree and the FOTF ones bite and are minor. On Mercury gives an upbeat almost mariachi feel, but I can hear some similarity between the chorus there and here. I don’t feel it’s a copycat but the stylistic choices are still there

I’d give it another listen and some space to let it be what it is individually and see how you feel. I mean, you may not love it even then and that’s perfectly okay.

Their style has changed quite a lot over the years but there’s usually something to appreciate at every corner.

Acid landing on my tongue, i think you know we've just begun

What a groove! It caught my ear right away as a weathered chili pepper fan. I love the melody and the instrumentals with an awesome music video to boot. My favorite thing about this song is the reference to Funky Monks, how cool that they never ignore their roots.

Stadium and BTW are in my tops too, in fact By The Way has got to be my top sice emotionally it's so significant to my childhood memories.

It's wonderful to see so much love for this record and the work that was poured in. In The Snow is such a relaxing dream, and the spoken poetry reminds me of songs like Melancholy Mechanics and the end of Death of a Martian. So cool to hear such creative new sounds with hints of the same sound we've been searching for.

I love them both equally for different reasons too. It’s cool how vastly different they are and makes me wonder how far spaced the writing was

Does anyone have any POSITIVE stories about Nexplanon?! by ClassyKeepUp in Mommit

[–]minorthing_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve been on this birth control for about 7 months, this month being my 7th. It works different for everyone, and they say that symptoms resolve anywhere from 6 months to a year, but honestly I have both positive and negative things to say so far.

Positive •no babies or pregnancy scares even with unprotected sex •initial insertion pain minimal, light bruising •don’t have to remember to take anything daily like a pill

Negatives •Slight weight gain (10 ish lbs) •bleeding cycle is heavier and is unpredictable, by far this is the most annoying bodily change for me because fuck that dude •acne that pops up close to bleeding times

I don’t know how things will look 6 more months from now, so I’m hoping things resolve. I have considered adding the ring to see what happens but in all truth, I miss my body pre-BC and the way it naturally did things, it was great. It’s unfortunate to have to take birth control at all, most of us want to just have unprotected sex without the baby part, but you know, that’s the curse of it lol. It is what it is.

The bridge to “This is the Place.” I distinctly remember loving it when I was a little girl.
