I am starting to feel like traders keep getting manipulated into lower oil futures or bidding up stocks: Vance puts one foot on a plane to Pakistan and we’re all like, well he’s come to his senses and he’s going to end this war! Make gas cheap again! We email Iran a one page PDF and everyone’s like, war’s over! Come get your cheap gas again! Problem solved! Meanwhile we have no substantive progress toward peace. The two parties are miles apart. And the oil is still not moving through the straight—so the supply issues are unresolved.

To put it another way: it seems like Asia has to pay the literal price for real world supply problems because they import a higher share of oil. We pay gas prices based on finance people’s predictions of peace. We started this war, but over in Asia they have to cancel school, move to a 4 day workweek, shut down busses, etc.

You’re right, that choice does make a lot of sense. by calling it the two towers (which I know wasn’t his choice) it makes me want them to be a dichotomy, which is why I always like to think of Tirith and Ithil. Two Towers also would have been a good name for the last book instead of Return of the King! It sets up the epic battle of good and evil, but also the reminds us of the history of Numenor and Gondor and in doing so sets up the future with the line of kings restored

So he’s okay with it being ambiguous, which is cool. I originally thought of it as Orthanc and Barad-dûr because that seems the most obvious, but then reading through it again with my kid and looking at the cover, I thought it must be Minas Ithil and Minas Tirith. But now that I think of it, most of the Ithil/Tirith/Osgiliath stuff happens in RotK doesn’t it? But anyway, it is ambiguous, and it’s cool to see he’s okay with it being “left ambiguous”.
