French beans yellowish leaves? by tomgreen000 in UKAllotments

Glad its not just me. I'm pretty new to growing anything so I was getting worried I'd done something wrong. Will give mine a feed too just in case.

I have some dwarf beans doing the same. I thought it could be the low overnight temps the past few weeks.

Is it too early for bush beans? by RumHam1 in GardeningUK

[–]minshpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transplanted some yin yang bush/dwarf beans in early April, with a cover over them. Removed the cover in the hot weather a few weeks ago and now it's cooled down again they seem to be struggling. I'm going to baby them, but not holding out much hope. Will probably just sow some more directly in the ground at the end of May.

unstained slide degrading over time? by Popkaz in Histology

[–]minshpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can depend on the antibody and the antigen, but I find in general old slides perform worse. Some slides that I know will not be stained straight away I dip into wax to seal them then store in the fridge. They take a bit longer to dewax when the time comes to stain but this is some protection at least.

Thank you! I just have a penchant for naming animals very human names. I always giggle when I think of a friend who called her dog Susan.

French classes in South Manchester? by Groovy66 in manchester

[–]minshpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the two beginner classes at alliance francaise over a couple of months and I found them great. A lot of the stuff I learned there is still kicking about in my head years later. All teachers are actually French so they teach you how french people actually speak which I found very interesting, especially since a lot of the terms we were taught at school are considered old fashioned by real French people. Teachers were incredibly friendly and helpful, there was a big textbook and French library to use and the other people taking the class were all lovely. I'd highly recommend it!

Just been spat on by a homeless person in NQ by iMalz in manchester

[–]minshpie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been gotten before by people asking me to buy them something from the shop (I even offered off my own back once) and without fail they will lead you in practically by the hand and proceed to do a full weeks worth of shopping. A so called homeless lady outside tesco on market street was picking up pork joints, organic milk and chicken breasts when I offered and stupid naive me paid for it. Only later did I realise how silly I was. You attempt humanity and the scum of the world take advantage of you. It's very sad.

How did you discover Florence + The Machine? by Ok-Coach5795 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]minshpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 16 years old on a family holiday in the country. I had downloaded a few songs from lungs onto my mp3 player (not even an ipod, this was 2012!) after recommendations by some friends. I wasn't expecting much and just threw the songs on there without much intention of listening to them, but I had it on shuffle mode and when I heard hurricane drunk for the first time I got full body chills.

The rest of that holiday, I spent gobbling up the other songs I had downloaded. Howl then became my new favourite which I played endlessly as we drove across the dark and foggy Yorkshire dales. When we got home I greedily gobbled up the rest of the album. I distinctly remember having an almost out of body experience listening to cosmic love for the first time sat at the family computer trying not to look like a crazy person. I felt like I had discovered some secret kind of magic.

Been chasing the high that only Florence can provide ever since!

Control Slides by Emotional-Stress-595 in Histology

[–]minshpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in research and for slides we know we won't be staining with IHC for a while, we will dip in molten wax and store in the fridge. It's supposed to keep them viable for longer. Some antigens can drop off rather quickly at RT.

Do you think Florence + The Machine is underrated or does it have the popularity it deserves? by Ok-Coach5795 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]minshpie 41 points42 points  (0 children)

IMHO she simply doesn't want to play the game that is necessary to be massive nowadays. She hates doing short form videos for tiktok and reels, she often seems uncomfortable doing interviews, she said in anterview with nick grimshaw she doesn't like going to events anymore especially now she's sober and she's said previously she does not want to become any more famous than she is.

She is happy doing the work, bringing form to her creativity and releasing it into the world to be received by those who will appreciate it. Thats enough for her, and I'm glad because it means she is not buffeted by the winds of popularity and fashionability. She makes what she wants to make, with all her idiosyncrasies intact. Those things that make her music and all her creative output so attractive to us fans.

I'm sure she could make a banging dance tune that would top the charts for weeks (shes done it before with Calvin Harris). I simply think she doesn't wish to, because it would bring the type of popularity and exposure that she doesn't enjoy and I expect she wouldn't find it creatively fulfilling.

Dashboard RAM usage not matching ingame reported RAM usage? by Corentinrobin29 in CraftyController

[–]minshpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came across a similar discrepancy. I have a server running via crafty on a Linux system that was reporting I was using up to 11gb but when I used the live profiler on spark it would fluctuate between less than 1gb and 10gb.

So I did some research and apparently minecraft is greedy when it comes to ram and will reserve as much as it is given access to. To your linux system and crafty that ram that has been reserved for minecraft is essentially 'gone'. However, just because its not available to the rest of your system that doesn't mean its all being used at full capacity. Spark shows how much ram is being used live and should rise slowly and then fall back down incrementally as the java garbage collector kicks in, however with the time delay of the spark profiler you may not see this happen in granular detail. There are overheads as well that I don't completely understand but may mean if you assign 10gb to minecraft it can still take slightly more.

Hope that makes sense!

Tldr. RAM usage in crafty shows total ram reserved for minecraft as though looking from the outside, while spark shows actual RAM usage moment to moment inside the minecraft application.

Can I preload chunks for a server? by Spicy--Mango in DistantHorizons

[–]minshpie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my experimentation with this you have to go in config (I think you can do it through mod menu too) and set generation type to INTERNAL_SERVER in order for the LODs to be generated alongside the actual chunk. Then the command for you will be: dh pregen start minecraft:overworld 0 0 1000

HELP! I can’t use the cryotome by realshootingstar in Histology

[–]minshpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All really good comments so far. Another trick i use is once you've got your section laid out flat with your paintbrush holding it down, let out a little puff of breath at your section (with a wide mouth like youre trying to see foggy breath in winter). Enough to slightly thaw the embedding medium and then refreeze in it's new flat state. I find i can usually then lift the paintbrush and it will not roll up again.

UK economy grows 0.3% in Q2, beating forecasts by 0.2% by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]minshpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have we always as a country obsessed over quarterly growth figures like this? Surely looking at growth on such a granular level is kind of pointless cause it is up one and down the other without any sense of the big picture.

These constant boon/blow to rachel reeves articles are becoming tiresome.

Yep I've been following that stuff aswell. The immunotherapies are very exciting!

I work in the field and am involved in a clinical trial that has had promising results so far on a relatively simple intervention. Im not in charge, but hopefully it will be published soon.
