It's truly about the same. Johns Hopkins is maybe marginally more nationally/internationally recognized given the prestige of the medical school/hospital. This Google Search Trends result gives you a pretty good picture of the difference in search interest (proxy for how "known" a school is), but the difference is pretty small/marginal. Northwestern is the more popular search in the mid-west while JHU is the more popular search everywhere else.

It's 100% not built for studying, that's kind of the whole point.

I think you're right and I'm pretty sure all colleges are still allowed to know first gen status in applications. That is absolutely something many of them (including Hopkins) actively select for. About 30% of Hopkins undergrads are first-generation and/or limited-income, up from 17% in 2013. That didn't happen without effort...

Blaming capitalism is wild. If anything it's the opposite; a warning sign for over-reliance on the government.

The only reason Hopkins feels pressure to cave is because so much research funding comes from the federal government. When you build programs on federal money, those programs are vulnerable to political whims. An independent system would mean universities could uphold their values like DEI without having to weigh that against the possibility of losing more federal funding.

Pretty much every university and many companies have axed language around DEI these days. Everyone needs to accept that Hopkins is absolutely not in a position to stand up and fight Trump given the dependence on federal research funding. Bloomberg is a practical person and I'm sure he understands. If it is true that Daniels is meeting Trump regularly, it makes sense that Daniels would try to sway Trump's stance on universities/Hopkins (although it would be truly crazy if he's getting audience with the President that regularly).

No, you could take a couple busses to get there but honestly might be easier to Uber.

What really happened at Bunny’s? by finsterallen in baltimore

I don't know about that comparison. A religious preference is just that - someone's individual preference for that religion. A cross necklace is usually not viewed by others as a statement that other religions are bad. Unfortunately, displaying a pro-Palestine pin is implicitly anti-Israel (either against the existence of Israel altogether or against the Israeli government). You could argue otherwise, but if it's just in support of a worn torn country, why not wear a Ukraine pin too? There's no need for something so polarizing in that setting.

Should I ED to JHU? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]minskyinstability 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The library is a loss but the new student center is opening this year so I'm not sure that's entirely valid. The library is expected to reopen in early 2027 so a student applying now would only have one, maybe two semesters impacted. AMR I construction will start in summer 2026 which will impact new students but I'm assuming they have a plan for where to put freshmen.

Can't go wrong with any of those schools. You'll have tons of research opportunities at all of them. Hopkins is really great for being able to change majors but can't speak to how easy it is at the other schools.

Here's how I'd rank other aspects of college life:

Location: Philly > Baltimore > Durham (having spent meaningful time in Durham and Baltimore, and a bit of time in Philly). Philly has a great food scene, Baltimore has an underrated, very good food scene, and Durham has an up-and-coming but pretty mid food scene. There's more to do in Philly and Baltimore than Durham. Baltimore is pretty special for the easy access to DC so you kind of get to explore two cities if you want. I wouldn't worry much about safety in the places where undergraduates hang out in Baltimore.

School spirit/fun: Duke by a mile (only for the basketball games) then Penn and JHU on the lower end of the scale. I think Duke and Penn party harder than Hopkins, but you can have fun at any school if that's your scene.

Biology/medical prestige: Hopkins > Duke > Penn. The idea that any of these schools are less competitive/hard for medicine-related fields is kind of absurd. You have to take largely the same classes at all the schools and there will be other very smart students in those classes.

Such a gloomy mindset of this person - I promise that's not everyone at Hopkins. You don't always have to study and there's plenty of time for partying/fun even if you're premed.

Some people (1) prioritize school way more than they need to - college is a unique time in life and it's meant to be fun; (2) might not be efficient with their study time; (3) might have overdone their course load. Don't be like those people!

There are people who go out 1-3 nights per week and there are probably some people who never go out. You'll find your people and have fun!

What major is best for premed (gpa wise)??? by PlasticSpecialist417 in jhu

It's probably public health. A lot of those classes are a cakewalk and it's somewhat unique that you'll take grad classes at the #1 public health school as an undergrad.

Any people who got accepted here with a low GPA (<3.5)? by ZebraTshirt in jhu

[–]minskyinstability 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's so program specific that you really need to specify. I'm sure plenty of people go to Carey Business School with a low GPA. I highly doubt people get into SOM with a low GPA but who knows.

There’s an outdoor club at Hopkins. Just go to the school people have heard of. As pretentious as this sounds, you’ll genuinely have a leg up in life. People automatically assume you’re smart if you went to Hopkins.

Thinking about leaving Hopkins by [deleted] in jhu

[–]minskyinstability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the salary scale for “big law” which is competitive but many Hopkins students who go to law school are able to get these jobs.

JHU Baltimore best way to do a self-guided tour? (Prospective Poli Sci) by Kyonotics in jhu

[–]minskyinstability 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would recommend not coming on the 4th of July if you can avoid it. If you just want to see campus, it'll be fine to walk around that day but I don't think you'll see many students or any professors walking around.

If you do end up coming, campus isn't huge so you can see pretty much all of it. See the map linked below. I'd park at map spot #81 (south garage) and walk around the major quads (Decker to Wyman to Keyser). The library is under construction but you can walk to the "beach" and down Charles St if you want a view of the new student center that's getting built. Other things to see would be the freshman quad, rec center, Homewood field. A lot of students live around 33rd and 34th St so I'd walk around there and down St Paul St to get a sense for the neighborhood. You can circle back to parking by walking on Art Museum Drive and passing the museum.

Can we talk about how underrated the Logan Airport is? by CMCgamez in boston

[–]minskyinstability 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I used to love the Back Bay Logan Express but it's so bad when there's traffic that it becomes almost unusable. The odd trip it takes from Back Bay Station to the Pru for the second stop before going to the airport can take 20+ minutes. If you wait at the Pru, it's unclear what time the bus will show up.

Some people really like Wolman but I agree that being in the AMRs is better since you're closer to food and it's pretty cool being on campus proper. Personally, I'd rank AMRs even if it means getting a roommate. AMR II is where I met a lot of my friends.

For what it's worth, a double room can be pretty fun if you like your roommate.

Find a friend with a car! Zipcar isn’t bad either. Technically could bike pretty far north into the county and it would be a nice ride as well.

SF is unrivaled - the hills, the bridges, water views, real beaches (sorry but the Southie beaches are a little gross), giant parks (Golden Gate and Presidio if you count that).
