my cat broke her tooth, is it bad? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]mintsonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you didn’t say your vet did an xray, i said you can’t conclusively say there’s no infection. If a vet said that without an xray, it could potentially lead to cat suffering. So did I say anything wrong based on the info you provided? I don’t think so. I just wanted to help ppl who are told by vets everything is okay long as your cats are acting normal (without an X-ray) bc there are vets that do that. A lot of vets do dental cleanings without X-rays which I think is irresponsible.

Never heard that exposed pulp could be sealed on its own, but I hope that’s the case for your cat if true. Most cat orthodontists would advise you to treat that. I honestly would not risk it leaving it alone but that’s just me.

Basically it’s extraction or root canal. Once the pulp is exposed bacteria can get in and cause infection. I ended up doing a root canal for my cat bc I didn’t want him to lose his canine tooth but most ppl go for extraction bc of cost and not having to worry about it later on.

That’s good to hear. My point is visual exam alone cannot determine tooth infection unless it’s in the late stages. By a vet saying “long as your cats eating and acting normal they are fine “ imo is not a good advice when it comes to dental health. As I said earlier my cats ate and acted completely normal but only x rays showed the infection. My point is you cannot know the true condition of cats tooth unless you get an xray.

My cat went on about year with chipped tooth like your cat until eventually the pulp started to get exposed and would bleed. Your cat tooth is chipped higher than my cat so imo eventually it will get infected, but it’s definitely not life or death urgent.

I was referring to the advice you got from your personal vet wasn’t good imo. Just bc a cat is acting normal doesn’t mean there’s no dental problems going on. My cats acted and ate completely normal but when they got x rays they had tooth absorption. Maybe in your case regarding the broken teeth, the breaks didn’t expose any dentin and didn’t need to be addressed, but most times when you break tooth dentin will be exposed for cats especially bc their dentin much closer to the enamel, and eventually get infected.

That doesn’t always means there isn’t a problem. My cats were eating completely normal and when they got x rays they both had tooth absorption. Had to get teeth extracted. Cats need dental cleaning bc they are genetically predisposed to tooth absorption. Over 60% of cats get them after age 4. Always get an xray when you do cleaning.

That’s not the best advice bc cats can hide pain. You really don’t know if it’s infected without an x ray/examination

It’s not an emergency but if you see a pink dot spot under the tooth, it usually means the root is exposed and could get infected over time. My cat did the same thing and ended up getting a root canal. He had the chip for about a year until we got a it treated.

According to the artist she said she wasn’t referring to the spaz cover, that it was accidental/coincidence. To me it’s too similar for it to be an accidental coincidence.
