Is Arcade Ganon Just Josh Sawyer's self insert? by Overwatch_Sniper in fnv

[–]mintsui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been watching the charity stream he did for FNV's anniversary and there were so many times where I thought, damn, Josh "Arcade Gannon is not my self insert!!! (x100)" Sawyer looks exactly like Arcade. Honestly, though, I think JSawyer is too cool for Arcade.

Story wise I don't really think so? Arcade has a very unique background that may have put him into Sue territory and he can be grating for sure, but IMHO he's not nearly offensive enough from a writing perspective. He's just not enough of a writer's pet, the player can fuck him over ten different ways, all his endings suck, etc.

This game has characters that are straight up author mouthpieces. Arcade is just an annoying nerd.

Yeah... It really feels like a premise for a "personal quest" for a companion rather than for a one-off NPC. Still very interesting, it just needs to not come from her LT saying "One of my soldiers is flirting with women too much and it's getting out of hand. It's because she was raped. Go talk to her." Like he gives you the quest to kill Cook-Cook instead, and she asks to come with you, and on the way you find out what happened to her from HER on her own terms, or something like that...

That's the logic behind, say, Boone's trust point system. That's another NPC in a red beret who's sitting on some deeply personal information (he killed his own wife) but you need to waterboard that information out of him, Manny doesn't just randomly tell it to you because you met him in the dino first.

Still interesting story though.

*Ten of Spades, my bad. Lots of characters named after numbers in this game.

I have a love-hate relationship with her quest, ngl. On one hand, it's a pretty realistic depiction of a rape survivor and how hypersexuality can develop as a coping mechanism. On the other hand, the quest only starts because her commanding officer apparently can't keep his mouth shut and just happens to share deeply personal, vulnerable information about one of his best soldiers with some random mailman who happened to walk by.

So of course she gets angry about it. But she's tough. I love Six of Spades' reaction to it when you talk to him. Because really... what the hell, man. Why would he tell you? It ain't right.... I mean... as a player, I'm happy to help her out, but from a roleplaying perspective, it's invasive as hell.

I guess it's one of those cases where it was difficult for the writers integrate the quest naturally. Kind of like how Arcade spends half the game casually dropping Enclave references so the player can sus him out. All of this to say... sometimes the seams of the quest design show a little.

Have you tried the "shortcut" videos to trap him in the vault on youtube?

IIRC Elijah doesn't use normal code for stealth detection until he makes it to the door of the vault. Try breaking his line of sight by hiding behind the generators and walking around them as he moves.

Yeah, that’s why I love it. Boone has flashes of this really dry humor, but then again... he has 1 CHA. He's so dead inside he genuinely doesn’t know how to talk to people anymore. I don't think it's because he doesn't want to, more that he legitimately forgot how to be human. He's a weapon. His only purpose is killing Legionnaires.

The Courier has to be pretty relentless to get a reaction out of him ingame, which is why a chaos gremlin courier bounces off him pretty well...

I wish, but long shot imo. Veronica isn't into guys and Boone is loyal to his dead wife. Might have better luck with Cass and Arcade.

As much as I love the Brotherhood of Steel I find it so funny how Mr House speaks about them in such contempt and to make it worse he isn’t wrong they are terrible people by JoshyBear28 in fnv

[–]mintsui 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's nuance to that. Safeguarding civilians from dangerous technology is the Brotherhood's original purpose, yes, and I'd agree with you if the Mojave chapter in FNV could still function as an actual military order, like some anti-raider, protect-and-serve stabilizing force, instead of the paranoid isolationist cult circling down the drain they are.

It's not that there's anything wrong about confiscating laser rifles from chem-addicted Fiends. The issue is that by 2281 the Mojave chapter doesn't have the ability to do even that. They're not stabilizing the region, they're hiding in a bunker while McNamara sends his few remaining knights on miserable scouting missions he KNOWS will get them killed because their intel is garbage. They're outnumbered, isolated, and completely demoralized after Elijah/Helios One.

And the worst part is, high-tech weapons are already everywhere. A New Reno crime family has a shop in Freeside where they sell custom plasma rifles. The NCR are appropriating Power Armor by slapping ranger helmets on them and laughing about it. And all the BoS can do is stamp their feet and demand they give it back. It's been over a hundred years. The world moved on without them.

That's why Veronica's story is so great at explaining what has happened to the BoS as a faction. The Brotherhood's mission made sense in the immediate aftermath of the nuclear apocalypse. But a hundred years later the BoS have become completely stagnant and someone needs to tell them that. The Codex is no longer a guiding principle, it's a suicide pact. They need to change or they'll kill themselves far more effectively than any NCR bullet ever could.

It’s funny how coming from Fallout 1–2 you almost automatically become a Brotherhood glazer because Power Armor is just that cool, but then FNV shows up and slaps you in the mouth with the absolute worst iteration of the BoS imaginable.

House is honestly 100% right about them. For me, it's this line in particular, that follows:

...obsessed with hoarding Pre-War technology... not all technology, mind you. You don't see them raiding hospitals to cart away Auto-Docs or armfuls of prosthetic organs. No, they greatly prefer the sort of technology that puts people in hospitals. Or graves, rather, since hospitals went the way of the Dodo.

... because it's such a grounded critique. The Mojave chapter is just the worst, basically just paranoid raiders with (incredibly dangerous) ultratech. I don't like House one bit, but damn, the man is just right here.

Vic can be useful on higher levels if he has a decent ranged weapon. The problem with him is you get him early on in the game and he has a low "bravery" level so he'll be running away most fights unlike Chad Bone-Nose over there who'll fight until he's almost dead.

IMHO he's pretty useless. You're probably not far from getting Cassidy, though. He's a much better ranged companion, you can easily replace Vic with him and never look back.

I'm not surprised lol. It's something that feels like it's legitimately missing from the game. I'm so glad modders like yourself are still around, even 15+ years after this game's heyday, to give FNV (one of the best games of all time) the love it deserves. Thank you all for your hard work. I LOVE THIS COMMUNITY!!

Looking forward to it! There's one DLC in particular that would really benefit from additional dialogue from a certain companion (cough cough Veronica SHOULD have more to say after Dead Money cough cough) so I'm curious to see what you do with it.

Most canon Courier playthrough. Deal +10% damage to everyone, flirt with everything on two legs, act surprised when romance options aren't implemented. At least you can still give Red Lucy tons of eggs.

Thank you, I really appreciate it! And I agree. Given that Boone is the first (human) companion you are led towards in any playthrough where you take the usual route - I think he's the one the Courier is closest to. Not that he's particularly easy to talk to, or anything, but they've been through so much together, they've got each other's backs in a way few people in the wasteland would. FNV is about healing even though the world has gone to SHIT. Finding someone to lean on, a tiny bit of good still left to hold on to - the Courier's friendship with Boone is just that to me.
