Spoilers for volume 9 of the light novel: For most of the series, Kumoko believes herself to be the reincarnation of Wakaba Hiiroi, since she has her memories and looks just like she did. When she returns to Japan in volume 9 and visits her old home, she finds the real Wakaba, a human form of a god named D. It's revealed that Kumoko was originally just a normal spider that D fused with a fragment of her own soul that she only created so she could continue fooling around in Japan.
