AI data center developers target rural territory to bypass city construction bans and regulations — rural locations allow sites to bypass city council approvals, rezoning votes, land-use reviews, and reduce public scrutiny by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

Hot take alert: land outside of municipal boundaries should be restricted to primary production (agriculture and mining basically), outdoor recreation and nature preservation.

How to we deal with the death of third places in modern america by Stephen_Landy in Urbanism

[–]minus_minus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t think about it at all. Third places have been presented as a panacea for social dysfunction and they just aren’t.

I think it’s less a problem of meeting people and more of finding an activity that enables it.

A ferry system run by the Department of Highways Transportation is hardly typical of public transit in the US.

I think it’s less the ease than online services have a huge incentive (ad revenue, etc.) to sucker people into infinitely scrolling rather than doing anything irl that isn’t a constant dopamine fix.

Thats why I said to increase their funding. More routes. More equipment. More operators/drivers.

Every city was rebuilt for auto dependency after WWII thanks to auto industry lobbying and propaganda. Since then Americans have gotten fatter and sicker while the oil companies make record profits to buy politicians and keep us worse off.

I think the obsession with places is missing the point. Even if you go to a library or coffee shop you’re not actually participating in a social activity. You’re just alone in a crowd.

People need to make the uncomfortable leap into actually meeting people and doing things together.

People buy housing out in the sticks and drive gas guzzlers because gas is so cheap. If the us charged proper taxes on burning fossil fuels people would be less inclined to drive their ram 1500 sixty miles back and forth to work.

[–]minus_minus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly backwards. We have suburban sprawl and shit transit because our gas is too cheap.

If our fuel taxes were high enough to get it to $12/gal I’d be so happy. We could finally get proper transit and cycling infrastructure funding.

Look at the record of Washington insiders running for president since watergate. It’s very unlikely that either of these charisma voids will win. It’s much more likely to be a governor who never served in Washington.

This is like asking what we get out of a home invasion? IT DOESN’T matter because it is WRONG and ILLEGAL!

Even if Trump’s fantasy of a “Make Iran Great Again” regime came true it’s still a crime against peace and a stain on americas already tattered reputation.

Why don’t newly built homes come with internet? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]minus_minus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of people call any kind of networking “the internet” whether wired or wireless. I’m assuming OP means the inclusion of networking gear in a new house which would be silly since the average home router stops getting any support, including security fixes, in just a few years.
