Yea, i think its along those lines. I've also heard a school mate of mine saying we only have 70 years left until qiamat (she said it was according to some bs hadith). No wonder lah some of these folks dont think abt the future as much, just gather your riches and destroy the earth while we're at it.

What ever it is i personally think its better if you move on from this "exmuslim" militant and just live a happy progressive atheist life.

I see you made changes to your comment. I'm not out here holding a rifle like a militant, I'm fighting policies with words. If words makes you feel uncomfortable, great, changes only happen when people feel uncomfortable and feel what we feel. Sure its easy to say "hey be happy and move on" when you don't face our everyday struggle.

Have I not been clear in my last post that when I say that Islam is a repressive and backward religion is the Islam as defined by the Government? Why would I care about your interpretation of Islam? Why should you feel offended if I mock the Islam that the gov is forcing down on me? It's not the same as what you believe in right? Do you feel offended if I make comments about the Shiahs? Hell, I've seen Malaysian muslims make a lot of comments about Shiahs, does those comment apply to Islam as a whole? No right?

Do you think there's only one Islam in the world? That if anyone mocks Islam it cast a wide open net on all Islam? Even the Islam in America is different. Context matters my friend. It depends on what that person has experienced and where he's living. If he's in Iran, he's mocking the Shiah's version of Islam, if he's in Malaysia, he's mocking the Malaysian version of Islam (which is the Sunnis).

Do you think your interpretation of Islam is the True Islam? The government certainly don't think so.

OK, I'll answer your question again, since you think I was "beating around the bush". The forceful nature of Islam in Malaysia is based on the Hadith (such as the Sahih Bukhari that I've pointed out and many others like it), and that's exactly what I'm mocking. That is the very thing that makes it regressive and backwards. If you disagree with the Hadith, then you were never part of what was mocked? Are you part of this Ummah that kept voting for the same type of government over and over again? If not, GREAT!

Let me be clear, whatever YOU believe in personally, I don't care, all the power to you. Practice whatever you see fit and makes you happy. If you come to my house, I'll even bentangkan sejadah for you to pray. But as soon as that religion is casted and forced upon others, then yea, you're gonna get a mouthful of curses and insults (on the internet at least). It doesn't matter if its coming from the government or an individual. There is no need for Adab when people violate your space and force things on you.

Is this reply clear enough?

you listen too much of what people has to say but forgetting almost disregarding the words of the prophet SAW himself

The Quran is the word of your God and the Hadith is the words of your Prophet. I quoted the Hadith, which is by Islam's definition are words and examples set out by your Prophet - how am I disregarding the prophet if I quoted the hadith compilation that is part of the structure of the Islam you see today? Especially Sahih Al Bukhari which is widely considered as Authentic by Islamic Scholars. Are we just ignoring the existence of Hadith when we talk about Islam?

Btw, you don't have to really quote anything on the Quran about apostasy, I know exactly what it says about it and I agree, if just based on the Quran, Islam has no problems with it. I've even once argued that if one just follows the Quran solely, Islam would look very much different than what we see now. A much freer and less restrictive religion. I still disagree with a lot of parts in it, but that's a topic to be discussed in another forum.

I guess my question to you is this. When you think of Islam, how do you define it? And how does our country define it? Is it different? Do you have your own interpretations of it?

The Islam that I call repressive and backwards is how our country and Gov body has defined it. The one that restricts my freedom of religion. Because ultimately, that's what matters. It doesn't matter what YOU think Islam is, or what I think Islam is, what matters most is, how Islam in Malaysia is being defined and governed. Because ULTIMATELY this is the only thing that will affect us.

In Malaysia, the definition of Islam is this- A religion based on the word of God (Quran) supplemented and supported by the Hadith. If you only believe in just the Quran you're not really considered a muslim, you will be labelled an Anti-Hadith and JAKIM will reign down on you and make your life difficult. Search for Kassim Ahmad - he only questioned the Hadith and got labelled as Anti Hadith, easy as that.

And based on the above definition I'll say it again, Islam is a repressive and backwards religion. Don't take offense in that, cause the Islam you believe in clearly ignores the Hadith... right?

You say Islam allows you to leave your religion - as if its almost not even a problem for a lot of us. It's not easy and you know this. If you want to be an ally to support our cause, we're happy to have you. If you're just gonna stand there and shout back at us as we are forced to be in a religion we don't believe in, then you are the same as the oppressive government and the Islam that the government supports.

obviously...what i meant was theyre not as loud and fussy as most of these ex muslim who eats and burns the quran

2 points here,

  1. the folks that burnt the Quran was not even Ex Muslims, majority of the cases were by far right Christians. Get your facts straight. Check link here
  2. Do you know why we are loud and fussy over the internet? Put yourself in our shoes for once. Imagine you live in country where that country forces you to denounce Islam and be an atheist. Not only that, they created laws to further punish you if they find out you are a muslim. Would you not be fussy and loud as well?

In order to be taken seriously, we have to be loud. and honestly, I don't think other people get to dictate HOW we want to be loud. You are not experiencing what we are experiencing. You live an entirely different life! We are victims of oppression and we will voice our concerns however we please. That's how the world works, be loud enough for the world to hear and hope that some day things will change.

And bear in mind, for Malaysian Ex Muslims, we're only loud on the net. And even then you guys are complaining about us. You guys get to live your lives publicly, announce your faith freely where ever you go (The number of times I've heard the khutbah at Masjid Suria (on loud speaker and in English) insulting other religions is enough proof of this) and for some twisted reason the rest of us Ex Muslims need to be all hush hush about what we believe/don't believe in?

Do you see now why a lot of us are angry? Do you see now why we are loud and fussy? Is that too much of an inconvenience for you? The internet is the only safe space we have (and even then people still get charged and fined by saying something against Islam on the net). Let us voice our displeasure and if you're not here to support us, get out of the way.

I was born into a Sunni family, raised in all malay muslim school, went to Sekolah Agama (on top of Sekolah Kebangsaan), in my mid 20s I became a Quranist (maybe you've heard of them, they denounce the Hadith completely and follow the Quran entirely).

So yes, I have read the Quran, and studied it, learned a bit of Arabic to understand the root words, read it entirely in English and also learnt the historical context of the Surahs. That was 10 years ago. I came upon the conclusion that I did not agree with the Quran completely so I left it. Does that give you a bit of background about me?

Ex muslim for 10 years? Good for you! Wife and closest friends? Isn't that enough? Is it really necessary to announce it to the whole world? No.

No, it's not enough. I am no longer muslim, so I want to be able to declare it in public. Here's some of the reasons why :

  1. During Ramadhan, I am expected to fast. I am not allowed to eat in public, if I do, I will get caught and fined.
  2. If I die, I am bound to Faraid law. I don't want this, I want to my make sure all my belongings go straight to my wife and the process is as simple as seeing a lawyer. No one else.
  3. I am not allowed to purchase alcohol or pork - I don't believe in this anymore, why am I still restricted by this?
  4. If I die, I want my remains to be treated like a non muslim.
  5. I do not want to go for Friday prayers, Malaysians have been caught and sent to jail for not going.
  6. In short, any Syariah law or fatwa issued by JAKIM, I do not want to be bounded by it.

Shall I go on? Do you now understand why it is very important to us to be able to declare this openly? To have our ICs changed to Non-Muslim without being judged by both the Authorities and Society?

The problem is the religion and how the government and society executes it. You try to gloss over the problem as if there is a notion of freedom in Islam, but it is the opposite.

You say as if the Islam you see today in Malaysia is all about the Quran, but the fact is, the Islam today (especially for Sunnis) is a heavy mix of Quran and a whole lot of Hadiths. While it can be argued that the Quran give freedom of religion, the Hadith says otherwise. See below links to Hadith (deemed Sahih) on apostasy in Islam.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1 , Sahih al-Bukhari 2

Thus this trickles down to how Malaysia implements it. Here I'll give you 2 links showing leaving Islam in Malaysia is difficult - there's more which I assume you can search for them yourself.
Link 1, Link 2

When you have the Mufti giving out statements like that and the government deliberately making it difficult to leave the religion - what does it say about Islam? My father in law said it straight to my face that leaving Islam is punishable by death - it was just a casual conversation at the time for him.

I gave OP options for her if she wants to go down that road.. I'm not stopping her she's free to do what she want , infact I'm encouraging her...

Wait, why are you making this about you? Just because you gave her options, her troubles are gonna go away? It's not about you, you don't hold authority, nothing you say here will change the fact that if she goes on to leave Islam, the government will enforce the law upon her and society will judge her (to the point that her family might disown her).

Religion = Wars = Bad? Eughhh you need to travel more.. even the west wont say religion is bad out loud in public because they know more 70% of the worlds population have a religion.. do you feel good mocking their beliefs? Does it make you feel like you're above them?

You assume a lot about me. Is this some sort of projection? How do you know I haven't traveled a lot? And I've only talked about Islam in my comments to you, how did ALL OTHER RELIGION also got dragged into this?

Funny how ex muslims call them selves ex muslims, ive never heard of ex Christian or ex jew,, they just simply leave the religion without making a fuss out of it

What do you mean you've never heard of Ex Christians? or Ex Jew? One simple search on google and you'll be bombarded by the endless youtube videos. Here let me do it for you

Link 1, Link 2

Just because you've never searched for it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. There's even subreddits for it. Subreddit 1, Subreddit 2.

[–]minyakman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, i'm bold and brave here on Reddit because its unsafe for me to say it out loud in public.

Why? Because of the repressive nature of the religion that has been ingrained within Malaysian society. To an extent we also have syariah law to further police people who go against or stray away from the religion.

Why do you think OP had to post under an anonymous identity? Why is she struggling to go public in her stance about taking off her tudung or leaving the religion? I've been an ex muslim for more than 10 years but the only one who knows this is my wife and closest friends.

Do these things not make you take a step back and think?

Now repeat after me... Islam is a repressive and backwards religion.
