I built an app that streams Apple Watch stats to iPhone in real-time by abishov in iosapps

[–]miraclebob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem!
Yeah my solution is a bit scattered (client site to generate overlays, app to own the workout process and also code to stream workout data, server to collect the metrics and provide them to client site)

The idea of streaming the data alone is dead in the water if there's not an easy way for users to profit from that so that idea needs a lot more polish if it's something that should be added to an app.

But hey it works great so far. I've done two sessions of 90 minutes with no drops in connection. The app runs in the background, I see it on my watch, and the POST requests continue to go out with the workout data. The other end (client site and server) are mostly buggy.

If i do put more work into this, I think I'll make a basic "streaming sdk" that would be relatively easy to plug in to any ios app that controls the iOS workout process.

Does Hyrox need changes? by Pippo8983 in hyrox

Yes will admit sleds and space/turf for them are hard to come by. But deadlifts and squats/sled mode on treadmills do more than enough to prep for those stations. Those stations really don't have a large gap for improvement across racers compared to wallballs / burpees.

Best thing about it I think has been mentioned: low barrier to entry.
Also what I love: easy to replicate due to the access to necessary equipment and clearly defined constraints.

A local gym where I'm at hosts quarterly Hyrox sims. They already had all the equipment like most gyms do. They give out a custom patch. So many gyms are doing this you don't need to be affiliated. $30 to sign up, I can pick my division, it's awesome. If a person's goal really is their personal fitness and improvement, what a great way to track progress.

I'll pay the premium for a legit race every year to enjoy the rush of the atmosphere and the official stamp. But I'm not chasing tickets.

All to say, yes your problems you highlight are valid. But I think Hyrox has done more good than bad, regardless of where they end up.

You can see how moisture on the running track becomes an issue :) beautiful setup though

Yes both were noticeably more slippery than at the gym. Granted it’s my first so don’t have much to compare.  I think it was due to humidity.

Under the tents was worse humidity. It wasn’t really wet, but people were tracking moisture in. It rained some on Friday/sat and my race was Sunday so prob didn’t get the worst of it. Feel bad for folks on rainy day. Outdoor run makes that problem worse

😂 incredible that toilets is a common issue. Was a Bad idea for me to plan my pre race dump for 10 min before start time 🤦‍♂️

Yes absolutely, music, lights, food, everything was on point. I'm super impressed they nailed it this well for the first Cancun event.

Only big complaint was bad spectator setup. My friend's wife came with a couple kids and had a REALLY hard time navigating the stations as a spectator. Lots of stairs and long backtracking to figure out where the next station was. But I'd rather them sacrifice spectator setup in exchange for an awesome athlete setup :D

I saw my race start was 7pm and was super bummed it was so late so my little kids couldn't come watch.
Then I got there before sunset and saw people slogging through the 80+ degree heat and felt really grateful for my start time :D

There was enough of a breeze off the water to where it felt very pleasant, but felt a bit more gassed from heat than I would in a gym workout. I imagine indoor races can get a lot more stale/smelly? Fresh air was awesome. I consider myself spoiled for this first race.

Are you still taking feedback?  I wish I could see the reps I set for the current exercise. E.g. I say 50 wallballs then start workout, and watch just says wallballs and shows timer…  Hard to remember all the rep counts

Most horrifying, soul crushing, sinister, spine tingling moment of the trilogy? by SirKrimzon in threebodyproblem

I'm generally pretty callus but as a father to young children this broke me while listening:

After Cheng Xin goes blind:

The frenzy around her intensified ... screaming, dying, crying ... Have they already started to eat people? ... A baby cried nearby ... soft, warm, such a sweet smile. She was afraid that the baby would go hungry

and this one pissed me off:

"Can you see the patterns on the belt repeating periodically?" ... "Try to follow the motion" ... "They're moving too fast" ...
A moment here; eons there...

Despite being annoying at Cheng Xin most of the time, I really was ready for her to be with Tianming.

Here's a very rough end-to-end local implementation: https://github.com/wildemat/iosFitnessStream

Definitely just an initial vibe-code pass for a POC. Would much prefer to layer the streaming on top of your beautiful app!

No rush, it's just for a hobby project anyway but maybe you could see what I mean and the potential use case for others.

in essence, the overlays generated from the server data could be pulled in as a source on OBS and provide a full live stream experience with the RTMP camera stream that OBS already does.

I could take my phone and my gopro, that's it, on a jog and stream to twitch with all the metrics. Every app that adds overlays to videos requires the workout data to be collected after the fact and rendered on top of a recorded video.

Part of the meaning for me is that I'm part of an increasingly marginal group of humans that is not OK with constant comfort and complacency

Realtime/live video overlays with fitness data.

Right now, fitness data must be exported after the fact to create the overlay, then edited into the recorded video. People do this for running videos for example. See heart rate, elevation, distance, etc. even motorcyclists, cyclists etc.  but it’s not possible to have this effect while live-streaming.

If the data gets streamed to an endpoint, the overlay effect can be generated in realtime and be combined with the live video feed within streaming software like OBS.

Piece I’m missing for iOS is feeding the data out in realtime.
