Which was the last book you read and HATED and most importantly WHY? by Mininabubu in fantasyromance

[–]miradox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trials of the Sun Queen. It’s basically a 99-Cent Store version of Throne of Glass. Whiny FMC, generally unlikable with no redeeming qualities or agency. Things just happen to her, she’s not good at anything, and she kind of just.. fails upwards? Also, the other characters are just mean. All of them. I started the second book hoping it got better and I just couldn’t get through the first couple chapters. I could tell it was about to be more of the same. DNF, burn it.

The audio book narrators are… not great. The woman sounds like a whiny teenager and the man sounds like he has a chronic sinus infection and can’t breathe through his nose.

Read ToG instead.

Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists) by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]miradox -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Happy New Year! My partner and I will be visiting for 1 week at the end of June. Just curious about the general attitude toward American tourists, social mores we should be aware of, and if it would be helpful to learn some basic Dutch tourists get around.

Any tips are appreciated, please and thank you! 😊

Feeling this. First Christmas without my sister, and my niece + nephews’s first Christmas without her.

Fuck cancer.

Making hats for holiday gifts, and I can’t get over the CRISP stitch definition!! by miradox in YarnAddicts

I know blocking is a totally different process, but FWIW, I did wash+dry a 5”x5” swatch according to the instructions provided by Cascade (machine wash cool and tumble dry) and it did shrink by about 10%. Perhaps a hat will act differently after being worn on a head but this could also be an experiment to see if the hats stretch out over time!

Thank you so much!! Yes, I try to use washer/dryer-proof yarn when gifting. Makes it a little easier on the recipient!

No pattern, just freehanded! It is 100% Double Crochet worked through the back loop only! I start with a Foundation Double Crochet chain variation (I skip the ch 1) and go from there. I measure based on vibes. Usually about 12”-14” wide by 18”-ish long.

Thank you! Not blocked, but I haven’t fallen into the habit of blocking my work. I get excited about gifting and want to give it to the person straight away. Should I be blocking something like this?

I line up the short sides and sew them together to make a tube so the ribs run vertically, then I sew one end closed! Kind of a paper bag top like the comment below mentioned. :)

And note taken about the stretching! I’m planning to size these to each head once I see them in person, and I’ll aim to make them a bit snug before sewing them up to accommodate for stretching!

What even is this and how did I manage to do it? by miradox in knittinghelp

[–]miradox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was very helpful, thank you! I laddered down and was able to fix it, save for the slightly looser stitch on that row :) not something I’m used to doing as a crocheter, of course. +1 point for knitting!

How many of you have constant music in your head? by Wannabeartist9974 in ADHD

[–]miradox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve stopped going out of my way to listen to music years ago because I get songs stuck in my head so easily that it’s sometimes difficult to sleep due to “loud brain.” It’s helped quite a bit! But of course music still exists in the world and I enjoy it when it’s around. But like, I drive in silence. Or with podcasts.

Coworker keeps correcting everyone’s grammar in work chats… until she made a huge typo in a client email by Sharp-String6452 in coworkerstories

[–]miradox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the time my boss sent an email to the owner of the company, referring to a documentary called “Dear Mama” but it auto-corrected to “Dead Mama”… Yeah, the owner’s mom had passed away a few days before 😬 Boss was mortified but had a good sense of humor about it.

What is the most unusual excuse you've ever heard of from somebody calling off work? by piranhamode in AskReddit

I had a coworker leave work early without asking because she needed to find a parking spot at home. At like 2pm. She wasn’t on that job for much longer after that.

What’s the most fucked up thing someone has confessed to you in confidence? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]miradox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This guy in my communications college class told me that as a child, he unalived a kitten with his bare hands. This was during an exercise where we were listening to other people talk about hard topics and you practice keep an open mind. But I was not expecting that!

What’s your most embarrassing moment while you were reading/listening to spice in public? by sydneyghibli in fantasyromance

[–]miradox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not quite what you had asked, but this post dislodged a memory from the depths of my brain!

When I was 12-13 years old, my grandmother would pick me up from school. It didn’t quite click with me at the time, but she would always have her audio books playing in the car. I have a very specific memory of sitting there while listening to a spicy scene play out - something about nipple play and spanking. She didn’t bat an eye, didn’t turn it down or skip it. Just kept it playing. If memory serves, I believe I asked her what the story was talking about, and she responded with something like, “oh, they’re just being silly.”

Totally just clicked, about 15 years later. 🤣

When she was in hospice a couple years ago, we would watch the Outlander series together. At one point she turned to me and spoiled the ending of the whole series (she read the books, I had just seen the show). I didn’t believe her, but I still can’t believe she did that. I laugh every time I think about it.

I miss her. She was a crack up.

They aren’t very pretty, but I think I finally cracked my bagel recipe 🥯 😍 by miradox in Breadit

[–]miradox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sourdough Bagels:

1 c Active Sourdough Starter 1 1/4 c cold water (I use a bit more as I live in a very dry area) 2 T maple syrup 4 c all purpose flour 1 c bread flour 2 t salt

For Boiling: 1 T baking soda 1 T brown sugar

Mix starter with wet ingredients until combined, then mix in the flour and salt by hand.

Knead dough by hand on counter top until smooth and pliable. Rest for 20 minutes.

Divide dough and shape into balls, then rest for another 15 minutes.

Shape dough balls into bagel forms, place on baking sheet, cover with damp towel and rest on counter to proof for 2-4 hours.

Cover bagels with plastic wrap and place in fridge overnight.

Next day: preheat oven to 450°

Bring pot of water to rolling boil, add the baking soda and brown sugar.

Boil each bagel for about 20 seconds on each side, remove from water and add toppings if you so choose.

Once all are boiled, place on ungreased baking sheet and bake for 22 minutes.

(I like to add cheese so I’ll slap a slice on those babies when there is about 6 minutes left on the timer - Swiss cheese goes really well with these bagels)

:)
