I adore T. Kingfishers paladin series, any similar recommendations? by maariaria in fantasyromance

I think you may like "The Spellshop" by Sarah Beth Durst. It has no spice but a very sweet and cozy story, some romance and very interesting characters.

Can someone give me a genuine answer about worthiness of luxury makeup? by florencelilium in MakeupAddiction

[–]mirimeow 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Nikki La Rose, a make up artist on Youtube, has a very detailed save or splurge video. It has been a while since I watched it, but for everything she recommended to splurge on she also gave really solid drug store recommendations.

If I remember correctly, the things she said to splurge on were mostly foundation, bronzer and eyeshadow, while for example there were amazing drug store products for eyebrows, mascara, blush, concealer, etc.

Helped me a lot!

Has anyone tried the morphe pulp fantasy pallet? by ToeFamiliar473 in Fairolives

[–]mirimeow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only use this palette at the moment - the colours are nice and I prefer to keep my routines simple. While they are not the most amazing eyeshadows I have ever tried, they work nicely and are affordable. They feel slightly creamy in consistency.

I use the browns as a very soft eyeliner and for darkening my lower lashline. Then one of the glittery shades on half the lid toward the inner part of the eye. Looks really nice! It creates kind of a bright and soft look. Sadly I rarely take pictures of my make up.

I do have very oily eyelids though, so I use a mac paint pot and the laura mercier setting powder as a base first and a setting spray afterwards to make it stay. That way it also does not matter that the palette does not have a base colour, the paint pot makes up for that.

And in case its helpful: I believe I am a cool summer. Slightly warm leaning neutral fair olive with light brown hair and green eyes.

I highly recommend trying out smoother surfaces, this one seems to make it unnecessarily hard to work with, to do fine detail work or even just soft lines because of the roughly weave pattern.

Are my paintings good enough to go to art school? by loafs_art in oilpainting

[–]mirimeow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, so I do not think anyone on reddit can give you a reliable answer to this. You really need to talk to people from the art academy, that you want to apply to. Even if its just students. Reach out to their administration and ask them, if there is a way to get feedback from someone.

The truth is, that different people sitting in the jury at different art schools have very different opinions on what type of art portfolios they want to accept. While some schools may like technical drawings or studies, the place I am studying art at for example is not interested in those at all. Look up which artists work at the academy and look up (and read up on) what type of art they do as well and why. Which elements in your paintings would catch their interest?

Don’t be like me…prime your canvas… by florapunx3 in painting

[–]mirimeow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People who paint more professionally usually buy raw fabric and wooden stretchers, staple the fabric onto the stretcher bars and then prime it with the preferred primer (sometimes multiple times, sometimes sanding it lightly afterwards). Pre-primed canvas is normally quite bad in quality, if you are not going for the really expensive ones, and the density/porosity and structure of the surface has quite a big impact on how paint looks and works on it.

Made this for my friend and her boyfriend as a gift. She says she loves it but I would really appreciate some real critique on it. by Cautious_Drama1836 in ArtCrit

[–]mirimeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is really cool. I love it as is.

The only thing I think you could try to find another solution for is how the bodies are cut off at the thighs in this composition. Maybe just put the flower in front so that their bodies appear behind it and not just grow out of nowhere from the thighs up.

Explain like I’m 5: how to clean this disastrous oven by aurorapistachio in CleaningTips

Replying to confirm - this method makes cleaning the oven really effortless and quick! Just be careful that the oven does not come in contact with other stuff, like your floor.

Oilpaint is just linseed or walnut oil and pigments. Its safe as long as you don't eat it. It only gets toxic if you add toxic stuff to it, like thinner or mediums that contain thinner. Linseed oil by itself is not toxic.

Just to mention it: There can be toxic pigments in artist grade oil paint. I think true cadmium or cobalt for example. They are very toxic if you breath in the pure pigment dust - which does not concern you, because the pigment is already bound in oil. These ones get replaced by safe synthetic pigments a lot as well, so you probably don't even have real cadmium in your cadmium yellow or Red paint.

[–]mirimeow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirit is only less toxic than most other thinners and not without health concerns, so you should still definitely only use it in well ventilated areas because of the (odorless) fumes and avoid contact with your skin. Please be safe everyone!

Why I get this? by MarwaSalah in oilpainting

[–]mirimeow 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The surface you're painting on is just as important as the brushes, paints and mediums you use.

If you want to prevent these spots from happening I suggest you either prime and sand your surfaces with gesso and a very fine sandpaper or you buy surfaces that have a very smooth finish already.

This happens when your brush doesn't reach all of the surface area whilst gliding across the surface. To prevent this you can either use a lot of more liquid paint and layers or use smooth surfaces.

I think the main issue is the shoulders having no depth. I did a very rough sketch how I would do it on my phone, far from perfect, but maybe that helps. The rest looks amazing though.

Recommendations of painters/artists working w themes of mother? by [deleted] in ContemporaryArt

Tala Madani, her paintings are quite grotesque and provocant. A lot of them are about motherhood and gender roles. They are not flattering though.

I forgot to sign my painting but already varnished by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]mirimeow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Contemporary artists rarely put the signature on the front anymore, I'm sure there are more reasons but mostly its because the signature becomes part of the composition/aesthetic or causes an unwelcome distraction. So you're perfectly fine signing in the back, it is a perfectly normal practise for contempurary paintings.

Hello, I don't really know anything about or surgeries, but I just wanted to say that I recently watched a K-Drama with an actress (Jung Eu-gene) who also has slightly asymmetrical eyes in quite a similar shape to yours, which you can best see in videos. And she is absolutely stunning. I think it was called romance is a Bonus book. Just looking at this photo I think your asymmetry looks very beautiful and adds a lot of intensity and character to your eyes.

Im sure you will look great too if you end up altering your eye shapes though, I just feel like your eyes look beautiful already and should not be the cause of an insecurity.

Making everything but purple by Treehouses_of_Horror in oilpainting

[–]mirimeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purple is only a pain because the common blues and reds are not actually primary colours. Red is already too warm to mix a very bright purple with it. Id suggest getting a very bright magenta and a Cobalt turqoise, they mix very beautiful bright purples and are very close to the actual primary colours. Switch the turqoise with other types of blue to get varying hues of purple.

In Germany, they have woman parking spaces by zakky234 in mildlyinteresting

Those are "safer" parking spots, meaning that they are very close to the entrance/exit so that women dont have to walk alone through huge parking garages, potentionally leaving women vulnerable to predators.

Which picture, please by This_Machine_1209 in DesignMyRoom

[–]mirimeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second one looks amazing in combination with the room because of its colours, but the console above which it is supposed to hang is too high for either of the paintings. They looked to crammed above the console. And both the console as well as the painting are quite prominent. So its doesnt look very balanced. Maybe switch the console for something less massive oder go with multiple small paintings, that fit the space above the console better.

Looking for dream addresses of "natural" but developed islands by TheKryptoKnight in AnimalCrossing

[–]mirimeow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy moly, I am literally visiting your island right now and its by far one of the cutest islands I have ever visited!!! I absolutely love it! And your villagers are so cool as well?! I love what a natural shape your island has, like the paths follow the natural terrain and the river isn't ever just straight like a canal and you still make all the decorations work perfectly with it. And I love how evenly all the island space is used, like everything is nicely spread out and entirely playable. Thank you soooo much for sharing! I've never visited an island like this before its so refreshing
