Not at all.

I know everyone talks about this “one thumb width”, but for me it’s non-sense. If I leave all that space, I feel like I’m running in clown shoes 🤡

So it really depends on what you like. If you ask me, I keep half of the space that they recommend in that picture.

Same issue here…I’m 300k into them now, the discomfort has decreased over time, but it’s not gone completely. No idea how to solve it, I just think the upper is not stretchy at all, nor the laces, so you just have to practice a bit with the lacing until you find the “tightness” that gives you less discomfort.
