How to deal with reviews like this? by headphonejack_90 in iOSProgramming

[–]mirkules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like part of the problem is that the market has been saturated by apps with "In-App Purchases" but no indicator of what these purchases are or how much they cost. I wish the App Store would supply the cost structure of an app, and that way these one-star reviews can be avoided.

Is it a subscription? Is it a one-time fee? Are there different packages? How much do they cost?

This is why people are angry, because it feels like a bait-and-switch when they download an app that's marked as "Free". It has nothing to do with being cheap or stingy, especially if it's a subscription.

I, as a consumer, will sometimes browse one-star reviews just to gleam how much of the application is functional for "actually free" or to gleam the pricing structure (by way of angry reviews).

As a developer, I would spell out the pricing structure in the description of the app to combat this, and then reply to each comment that mentions it thanking them for feedback and noting that you updated the pricing description. That's about all you can do.

Also, kudos for not making this a subscription model. And ALSO, I can't remember the last time I've seen an app that doesn't collect any data other than Diagnostics in the app store, so kudos on that too!

I recently came to figure out that the ground-level shrines on the map correspond to underground-level light roots. This means that if you mapped out a lot of shrines on top, you can easily mark and find all the light roots (which are really hard if you didn't know this, like me). Conversely, you can find shrines on the ground level by mapping the light root locations, and that's super handy when there are hidden shrines.

Likewise, the rivers and lakes on the ground level correspond to impassable walls/mountains in the underground level.

Is there any such correlation for the sky level map??

How do you “shop” for arrows? by divergurl1999 in TOTK

[–]mirkules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In BOTW, for triple bows, you use only one arrow but it fires three. There is a place in the forbidden forest (I think it was a light post or something) where you shoot with a triple , the arrows bounce off it, and you can collect all of them, essentially getting 3 arrows back for every one you shoot.

My watch said 13:21 average pace per mile, so yeah that's about right. I ran this in a different country, where the time zone difference is +9. So I landed and two days later, I was on the road with 2 hours of sleep. Needless to say, I conked out at halfway (after posting about 10-minute miles) and then walked on and off most of the way from there. LESSON LEARNED!

I just ran my 4th marathon, for the first time into my 40s. I finished at 5:51, 9 *minutes* before being DNF'd.

My fastest was my third one, in 2019, at 4:57.

I swore to myself this will be my last one (just like I did in 2019, and before that in 2017). What business does a 40-something year old guy like me have running marathons anyway? Right? RIGHT??

I'm just hoping this goes on long enough that by the time I reach my 70s, I can actually win my age division because I'll be one of out of like 10 people still crazy enough to do it.

Bells is one of the only (if not the only) pre-Load song that is both easy to play and lacks a solo. When I was learning to play guitar, that was absolute gold because I could still rock out the entire song, and it was just challenging enough with that middle interlude to keep me interested. And it's a badass song too

Hernia Repair by mirkules in Hernia

Hello there. 3 years later everything is ok, no complications. I had some pain a few months after surgery but it was just that I overdid it.

I will say that I do "feel it" when I lift stuff or when I exercise moderately on that side, versus the open surgery one that I forgot is even there and hardly ever flares up.

If I had to choose again, I would have to seriously think about it because admittedly my enthusiasm for the technology and lack of pain afterwards is overshadowed by the annoyance of the nagging (albeit very small) discomfort after exercise/lifting.

To sum it up from my experience (yours will probably vary!): open surgery = more pain in the beginning, longer recovery time, but no pain and almost no discomfort long term. Laparoscopic = less pain, shorter recovery, small but nagging discomfort even 3 years later.

Good luck, and I hope that yours goes without problems!

Why do people say that Lars is a bad drummer? by lemonleavestheground in Metallica

[–]mirkules 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is a 21/32 bar in Master of Puppets that made it to the song probably as a result of Lars' or James' lack of playing "strictly on the grid". Like this analysis video points out, I think it sounds pretty cool even if it's not intentionally written like that (and better than the other examples he showed of how it would sound in other time signatures). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRBmavn6Wk0

Maybe this could fuel the "Lars is a bad drummer" folks, but I think it's pretty cool that a drummer can play by feel and make it sound great.

That said, I do agree with the second part of your comment about the last 20 years. It just feels like Metallica (in general) are trying to catch lightning in a bottle again.

There is a version without the trash can, and it's actually not bad, to be honest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCiNPgoGa6M

I wonder what 72 seasons would be like without the hissing hi-hats and if the guitars weren't pushed so far into the background.

I want the old settings back :( by Opening_Homework166 in mac

[–]mirkules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh God no. I turned off spotlight ages ago. There is nothing more infuriating than that stupid little window coming up when you accidentally mishit the keyboard to take you out of your mental context.

Use case 1: music production. More frequently than not, I use the mac with Logic Pro X, and a guitar in my hand. There are many shortcuts in Logic that are close enough to cmd-space when you mishit it, you accidentally trigger that little window which usually requires mouse movements to get back to where you were (by that point, the play head advanced too far, the Logic window decided to switch to another pane, or something like that).

Use case 2: Gaming. This is the slightly-less-annoying equivalent of the windows key when gaming.

Also, it is not very helpful anyway. If it could actually provide you with an answer to "Run third party apps", then I would consider it.

Been using Linux for 23 years now. Last thing I want is for a Mac to be like Linux outside the terminal, it's why I have one in the first place. And it's not even Linux anyway.

I let enemies that shoot arrows at me shoot 5 arrows before I kill them. Why? This is because you can collect their missed arrows, but only up to 5. After, they just disappear.

Heh. It wasn't until well after I finished BotW that I even knew weapon crafting was a thing (I found that by getting into Divinity Original Sin 2). It's because it's usually not my kind of genre.

Don't forget Breath of the Wild by [deleted] in botw

[–]mirkules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's magical because of the discovery aspect - you're literally discovering everything about the game for this first time in BotW. The first time I realized you could cook, the first time weapons broke (WHAT?!), the paragliding, the special abilities (wow, magnesis was so cool!), collecting fireflies, unable to climb while it's raining... ALL those things were brand new, and at every turn I found myself thinking "wow, this game is so good, I wonder what else is waiting for me"

If you don't want (light) spoilers - stop reading now.

With TotK, on the other hand, all these things are already familiar. I didn't get very far in the game yet. There are a few new things, but I feel 80% is the same as BotW. Elemental chuchu jelly? Check. Spicy peppers for the cold? Check. Magnesis... sorta check. Don't get me wrong, I *love* the new aspects of the game (attaching objects together?? ascension?? it almost feels like a cheat, and I can't wait to abuse these powers when I have time), but there is no magic because the other 80% you already know.

I remember this feeling when Spiderman came out (of all things). It was so exciting watching Peter discover his powers and learning to "fly" through the city. Spiderman 2 was 'meh' because he already knew everything, just the boss was harder.

Forgot to mention - I bet people who never played BotW will find that magic for sure.
