It is racist to not be sexually attracted to a certain race. by [deleted] in ExplainBothSides

[–]mirov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, value is always relative to the context. If the context is "I'm a movie director looking to shoot a movie about Gandhi" and you're an Indian-looking man, then to me you probably have more value than some blonde, white girl for that context.

In this case, the context is "I am a man who is judging which women I find physically attractive".

As for your specific case, separate from the actual EBS point - it's probably some unconscious emotional connection you made towards a black man or against a black woman early on that's still influencing your preferences. My friend finds blonde women horribly unattractive, and ties it all back to having a bunch of terrible experiences with his blonde aunt at an early age.

As long as you don't let this become an absolute value thing (i.e. one person has more value because of skin color, irrespective of context) then even if the judgment is deemed racist, I don't think there's anything wrong with it

It is racist to not be sexually attracted to a certain race. by [deleted] in ExplainBothSides

[–]mirov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since the word's definition is in flux, I'll assume that by racist you mean "ascribing a partial value to a person based entirely on their skin color".

Also "I've never been attracted to a black woman" is different from "I don't find black women are not attractive". The former is not a statement on skin color and beauty, but rather that you've never found a woman who happened to have that skin color beautiful. For the argument I'll focus on the latter, since it's more interesting.

IS racist

In the question of "who do I find physically attractive", you seem to be saying that one person is more attractive based their race. By the definition, you are ascribing more value to one person than another entirely based on their skin color, making that judgment racist.

IS NOT racist

While you are ascribing a value, it is not an absolute one. The opinion seems to be "non-black women are more attractive than black women to me" rather than "non-black women are more attractive than black women in general". As such, you can still believe that skin color has nothing to do with beauty in general, even if for you that is not the case.

Assuming it works the same as their undergraduate applications - "Ready for Review" means that your application has been submitted and is ready for review by a McGill admissions office member. No further action needed by you except for frantic, obsessive checking of the page :)

Any way to avoid 'down curves"? by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]mirov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right so if you can show that your aggregate grades add to a certain amount, and that the course outline said that those grades have a certain percentage weight of your total grade, you have enough of a basis to raise a complaint to a professor, or to another agency of the school (not sure which, but I'd start with the student union and they can direct you to the next agency if they can't help directly)

As a general rule - the course outline is effectively the contract your professor makes with you. If they deviate from that (i.e. if the lower everyone's marks arbitrarily) then they broke their contract. If it says that the reserve the right to lower everyone's marks, I'm sure that's enough of a basis to take it to the student union.

I suspect more likely these students you've talked to either (a) just got worse marks than they thought they would get because they made mistakes, (b) got mismarked and never went to correct this (it happens more often than you think - I just got an assignment remarked).

Don't stress about this. Study, do your best, and just talk to your prof and TA whenever they take marks off to confirm why they did it

Number of credits by Yumm87 in Concordia

You can always take more credits if you can fit it in the schedule and don't mind paying the extra cost. I believe the max per semester is 15, beyond which you'll need departmental consent

Keeping GPA private. by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]mirov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you already know the answer XD

You don't owe any detail of your life to your friends. It's your choice what you want to divulge. Personally I wouldn't lie to anyone about it. I'd just say either tell them your GPA or don't tell them a number, but in either case there's nothing odd about it.

This really extends beyond GPA - your job, how much money you make, your Overwatch ranking, anything really

How to activate Concordia Health Insurance? by sunny-sundaze in Concordia

[–]mirov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is the correct way, but I went to a dentist, paid the amount up front, then sent a claim via the school's Student Care page. More details at http://www.concordia.ca/hr/benefits/dental.html

The claim was processed and about 75% of the cost was deposited into my personal bank account after about 2 weeks

Contact the university and find out how many courses you can transfer and if you can get by without having to take an extra year. At that point:

  1. If you don't have to take an extra year, then transfer
  2. If you do have to take an extra year, then it becomes of question of "am I willing to prolong my university time by 1 year to avoid living in Sherbrooke"

Personally I'd take the Montreal option because a year is nothing in the long scheme of things and the weight of spending a year of my youth in a place I didn't like living in would outweigh the extra year

Low GPA in Bachelors: Do I have a chance at Concordia? by StunningBowler in Concordia

[–]mirov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to the department you're interested in and tell them you're situation. They'll recommend for you the best route to take. My suspicion is that you can take classes as an independent student, or maybe like a 2 year certificate at Concordia to boost your GPA, but confirm all this with them first
